Rider Link: Mike Powell

Share

Mike PowellWW: Let's start with some stats... name, age and where do you reside?
MP: Mike Powell, 20 years old from Sunnyvale, California. I now reside in the South Bay area near San Jose.

WW: How many years have you been wakeboarding for?
MP: I would say about nine years now since I first put a wakeboard on my feet.

WW: Who introduced you to the sport of wakeboarding?
MP: My pops would be responsible for that. Took me up to his old boss' house near Don Pedro to hit the water for the weekend and nobody out there knew how to ride it, but there was an old Blindside board on the boat and I gave it a shot and haven't stopped since.

WW: Where do you usually ride?
MP: You can catch me out at Calero a few times a week, Anderson on the weekends and I make my way out to the D every so often.

WW: Is there a bit of a wakeboard scene going on there?
MP: Yeah, there are a lot of boats on the weekends and during summer, but there aren't many who ride all the time down here or early mornings.

Mike PowellWW: Contest or freerider?
MP: I can't say I'm not a contest rider because I do hit local Nor Cal comps, but I would rather go out to my little blown out pond and take a set every day just to chill with the folks and putt around on the board.

WW: Didn't you just get bumped up into the Outlaw Class at Nor Cal INT for sandbagging?
MP: Hahaha, yeah, I found out after my run I wasn't allowed to throw my last trick because it was worth more points than the class regulation. Obviously, I didn't read the book. I just have a few big tricks that I don't do a lot, so I didn't want to HAVE to throw them in the mix, so I was riding the lower class.

WW: Do you ride with a set crew of people or do you mix it up a little?
MP: I normally got the usual suspects around to ride all the time, but sometimes I mix it up with folks from around the way that hit me up every couple of weeks.

Mike PowellWW: What kind of boat do you usually ride behind?
MP: Black MasterCraft, blue Nautique, red Malibu, yellow MasterCraft.

WW: How about your wakeboard set up?
MP: 2010 Byerly Assault with Index boots at the moment. Love it to death. If you need any wake gear, check out The Liquid Playground at 2144 O'Toole Ave., San Jose, CA. Hahaha, harmless plug.

WW: What do you enjoy most about wakeboarding?
MP: The best part for me is the feeling of being on top of the water. In the boat and on the board is so fun. Plus, I just love water in general. And I get to jump!

WW: What do you like to do when you’re not wakeboarding?
MP: Snowboarding, of course, as well as skating some mini ramps and playing video games. Dirt bikes are always fun.

WW: Do you have WakeWorld.com set as your home page?
MP: Not at the moment. It was for awhile, but I have a WakeWorld sticker on my computer desk!

Mike PowellWW: So what happened to you last year?
MP: Last summer I was trying to do too much in the air, came down wrong and ripped my meniscus in half. So now I wear this brace thing on my knee.

WW: Are there any tricks that you are working on or want to work on?
MP: Right now I'm on a never ending quest to hold the board longer and longer in the air. And I would like to learn every 360 there is for me to learn. Plus, I would love to see myself on camera because I have never seen myself ride yet, surprisingly.

WW: What would your ideal day be like?
MP: Wake up and be ready to hit the water by 8:00 and ride until the wind comes, go home to grub out and do whatever seems fun at the time, watch wakeboard movies and go to sleep to do it again the next day. But weekdays I work full time to help support my cause. Plus, I go to night classes.

Mike PowellWW: Pro wakeboarders…who would be your top three and why?
MP: First I have to say Ricky G because he is the first pro I got to ride with and dude has been legit for days. Plus, you see that Kobe Bryant?! Nuts. Second would have to be Lyman because that guy is on another level and his melan 180’s are my favorite. Last I have to say D. Cook because he does the biggest mute grab anyone has ever seen. And you can catch me floatin’ in the boat during some lesson days behind the wheel.

WW: Are there any spots that you wish you could ride?
MP: Everyone always asks me if I have ever been to Lake Powell and I still have not, so definitely there. And I want to make it out to Florida some day and somewhere in nice blue clear water.

WW: Any words of advice to those that are starting out?
MP: Just go out and have fun and ride the board how you want to ride it. Don't let people tell you what tricks to do, do you.

WW: Is there anyone that you would like to thank?

MP: Definitely gotta say thanks to my dad for breaking the bank to tug me around all these years and giving me the world. My mom for yelling from the boat or from shore. Austin Watts at The Liquid Playground for everything on and off the wakeboard he has done for me, Derek at SBWA and my crew I ride with, you know who you are, homies who are thirds for the day, the guy at 7-11 who hooks it up with all the free stuff and Arun Frances for being the man! Oh, and everyone else that pulls me around the waterways...much love!
