Girls Ride The Wake Goes Off
This year’s Girls Ride The Wake was held at Westgate Landing Regional Park in Lodi, California, and featured 36 girls ranging in age from 9 to 55 and traveling from not only California, but Washington, Oregon and Nevada as well. It could not have been a better location with grassy camping and easy access to boat slips and docks.
This was my first year watching this unique event unfold and I am convinced it is the perfect event for any girl to meet others who share their passion for the sport and to have the opportunity to step up their riding. Local pros and GRTW coaches Andrea Ensminger, Danni Petraitis, Evelyn Nelson, Shelby Kantar, Shawna Hoffman and Raquel Hoffman provided beginners and advanced riders alike the opportunity to ride with and learn from them and each other.
Saturday morning began with check-in and registration followed by orientation and boat assignments. After that, girls boarded their assigned boats and headed out on the water to enjoy one of the most beautiful days the California Delta waterways has provided all year. Each rider was grouped by age and level of experience so that coaches could spend time one-on-one focusing on their personal riding goals.
After the first boat set was complete, it was time to head back to camp for lunch, trampoline training and an option for girls who wanted to try hitting a floating box to do so. A pro instructor and expert PWC driver were provided so the girls could gain confidence and learn the right way to approach and slide the box, and if the box was too intimidating, there were some fun floating obstacles to ollie over.
The girls were then gathered back at the main tent, assigned boats and sent out for an evening set with new coaches to provide some variety in coaching styles. Dinner came quickly and, as the sun set over all of us, there was one last thing GRTW had in store for the girls. A raffle that included shirts, hats, board shorts, soft coolers, ropes and handles, Indo Boards, tubes, a wakesurf board, cash prizes and more. One lucky camper even got to take home a brand new Hyperlite Syn wakeboard. All prizes compliments of awesome sponsors such as Hyperlite, Malibu Boats, Boat Country, WakeWorld, The Liquid Playground, Indo Boards, Liquid Force, Boulder Boats, Go Girl, Reef and DPC Films.
As night fell and camp fires were going, we got to sit back and watch movies such as The Chick Flick wakeboarding movie (which each girl got to take home a copy of) on The Liquid Playground's huge projector ending an awesome day/night.
Sunday morning, the girls rose stiff and tired, but eager to get back out on the water and, after a quick group stretching routine, it was a mad dash to the docks to jump on the Malibu and Axis boats provided by Malibu Boats, Bob Teagle and Wake Life. Girls had the opportunity to ride behind the A22 Axis as well as Malibu’s Wake Setter, VLX and MXZ. The last set ended around 1:00 so that campers could have a quick lunch, clean up their camp sites and say goodbyes to other campers and coaches.
All of us would like to say a huge thank you to Lindsey Sloatman and Evelyn Nelson for taking on the task of event coordination and making sure that Girls Ride the Wake 2012 went off without a hitch. Also, a special thanks to Squirrel, Bob Teagle, RustyImages, Wake Life, CIE, Ryan Wentz, F1F Productions and all the coaches for helping make this event amazing.
