Hey Wakefans! Welcome to the second installment of Wakin' a Movie, WakeWorld's continuing coverage of Loco Dawn Films' rompin movie, In the Wake of Identity.

We are totally STOKED over here in New York City. The film is starting to take off like a rocket and has now gained full support from nearly the entire wakeboarding community.

From the surf side, wakeboarding photographer Josh Letchworth has expressed interest in shooting stills for the movie and Malibu called about assisting with boats. We've also been yapping with the wakeboarding punk band, No Bare Feet, from Hawaii.

On the turf side of things, i.e. Hollywood, we've got some pretty powerful people lobbying on our behalf and quite a few high-profile folks showing major interest in the film. I wish I could disclose what's happening exactly, but until things are finalized, it's all gotta stay under wraps. If it helps qualm your hunger for information, more details are going to be unveiled in the next installment of Wakin' a Movie in about two weeks.

Basically, though, this is what's going on... Our first mission was to get the wakeboarding community fully and unconditionally involved with this film. We have succeeded with that. Now, it's time to bring this entire project to life and that's by bringing it to Hollywood. Our days lately have been spent making the script more concise, talking on the phone with folks out in L.A. and pitching pitching pitching. Best part: everyone is catching, catching, catching! (Seriously folks: how could anyone turn down such a great opportunity to be a part of something so awesome?) Bottom line: things are going really well and I look forward to telling you all about the latest from the turf side of things later this month.

Before getting to the fun stuff, I want to send a huge thanks out to all those sending in the great comments and suggestions as well as those posting them to the Wakin' A Movie Discussion Board. Keep 'em coming! We really are taking them into consideration. This film WILL be something wakeboarders the world over can be proud of and excited about rallying behind.

That being said, and without further ado, here is our take on some of the more poignant comments and suggestions you folks threw out at us:

  • It's not April Fools Day. This movie is happening!
  • No Keanu Reeves...YET
  • We're not going to use a documentary format and for one very good reason: Feature Films are the only formats that get wide distribution. internationally and we intend to take wakeboarding as far as the lakes of Tibet!
  • We're not gonna use pros in acting roles unless they can act. Most pros will be in the movie in a stunt capacity and in cameo shots.
  • Yes, we've got an awesome plot, which we will be disclosing to you soon, probably in the next installment.
  • "The Search For the Perfect Butta" - ha ha, we'll see!
  • There will be all types of wakeboarders, from beginners to pros, and most of the sports you mentioned will be represented. We'll try to get some cable park action in there if we can.
  • The purpose of this film actually IS a cross between a lobby for the sport and also a Happy Gilmore Hollywood flick. We got everyone covered!
  • Love story? Of course! And it ain't corny. No worries: the sport is in good hands.
  • Justin Stephens of Cadmium? We wouldn't dare do this without him! And yeah, we're gonna have an awesome trailer.
  • You folks keep talking "Hollywood" as if we're gonna botch up the image of the sport. Please take note that we're an indie film company with a wakeboarder as the CEO, i.e. Monroe Mann, i.e. ME! Truly, no worries! If we were all about Hollywood, we wouldn't be writing this column now asking for your advice!
  • Girls will be represented in a strong role. No weak females here!
  • We're still working on the movie poster. We're taking your comments into consideration. We may lose "Time to Wake the Nation." Also, we're working on having a poster design contest as well. What do you folks think?
  • We're not too keen on losing the identity thing; that's the premise of the whole plot. It's not a film about wakeboarding as much as it is a film about the effects of celebrity status on star and society set behind the backdrop of wakeboarding. Don't worry, it's still going to be the best wakeboarding photography you've ever seen and there will be more than enough action.
  • The name Severance must stay as is. It has sentimental value to me and, besides, his nickname is Sevy. More importantly, I thought you didn't want this to be a "Hollywood" flick. Come on folks! Work with me here.
  • We're now in touch with most of the actors you've mentioned. Keep the suggestions coming.
  • For music, we're looking right now at some Green Day, Sum 41, Crazy Morning (my band), Beach Boys, MxPx, No Bare Feet, Daniel Reed, The Drag, The Graceful Punks, and quite a few others. We're going to make a good mix of different sounds. We intend for this soundtrack to cover as much of the wakeboarding music scene as possible, even including a bit of hip-hop and rap.
  • As for locations, we may have to film most of it in Orlando for logistical reasons. This isn't to say some parts can't be shot elsewhere, or that in the film itself the 'setting' could be different from where it's actually filmed, but logistics often dictate shooting locations.
  • The production will take around six weeks to shoot principal photography, and two weeks stunt (wakeboarding) photography. We plan to start shooting in the fall. If we stick to that timeline, the film should be released in April, 2004. Fingers crossed.
  • A monkey? TOTALLY! Great suggestion!

If you want to help out with the promotion of this film:

  • Send "Letters to the Editor" asking about the movie to all the movie magazines, i.e. Entertainment Weekly, Premiere, Hollywood Reporter, etc. Tell them how stoked you are about the film, and that you think they should write up a story about it. You can even do it online via email!
  • Visit www.imdb.com and search for "In the Wake of Identity" and then, post about how excited you are about this film on the message boards at the bottom of the page
  • Tell all your friends about the film and get them to read this article at www.wakeworld.com
  • Continue to post your comments on the discussion boards here on the site

ROMP ON (and if you don't know what ROMP ON means, go to www.crazymorning.com)! In the meantime, I'm off to search for that perfect butta. How 'bout you?
