Nautiques also have a few nearly impossible to reach tie wraps holding the cable in place. Cutting the tie wraps when I did mine added about 2 hours to the job.

If the nut is that rusty and the starter is out I would replace the whole unit with a new sealed gear reduction starter. Sealed gear reduction starters are the same auto or marine. I think they run about $60 from online vendors.

I have a 2007 Avalanche LTZ. It's great for what you describe, rides like a car, looks nice (I get lots of compliments), and does a decent job of towing the boat. The LTZ has autoride rear suspension that starts to need some work around 100k +/-...
