From the streets of Los Angeles to the subways of London to the high rises of Tokyo, artist Shepard Fairey has long been haunting consumer culture with an ambitious mocking street campaign featuring an omnipresent Andre the Giant. In addition to creating the Obey Giant phenomenon, going on late night art missions and running his commercial design firm Studio Number One, Fairey also makes special DJ appearances, spinning his favorite punk rock and old school hip hop tunes that helped inspire his revolutionary art movement. Resting on laurels has never been an option for the men of Southern California’s punk rock powerhouse Pennywise. With the determination to bring their game year after year, the members of Pennywise have made a career out of not merely embracing punk rock but playing it as if their lives depended on it. Indie Rap Heavyweight 2MEX (born Alex Ocana Jr.) hailing from Los Angeles, is bred from the world famous Good-Life Café and is a member of the Visionaries. Wylde Bunch - 2:30 p.m.
The Wylde Bunch has a lot of excitement planned for the balance of 2005. In the wake of the 13-piece band’s success of their 2004 debut LP Wylde Tymes At Washington High, the WB is back with a fun, energetic and highly contagious new EP In The Meantyme…The EP. The Meantyme project features a few characteristics of the Wylde Tymes album, great songs and super-sized hooks. The first single and video “Dumb!” is a catchy rock/hip-hop shot of adrenaline perfect for college and indie radio. DJ Z-Trip - 4:30 p.m.
Considered one of the best live performance DJs ever by both fans and peers Z-Trip was among the first new-school turntablists to incorporate thunderous rock riffs, right alongside meaty funk beats, swinging soul riffs and old hip-hop breaks. He consistently headlines sold-out shows around the world. Z-Trip has famous fans as well, as he was been personally asked by Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dave Matthews to join them on the road. He is the progenitor of the modern-day mash-up, not afraid to throw Outkast against Tool, or put a Kansas song to a hip hop beat. After years of forging an emblematic identity as one of hip-hop preeminent DJs and showmen, Z-Trip has created his debut album, Shifting Gears (Hollywood Records). It's a time-traveling, stylistic opus that lives up to his reputation as being one of today's modern day music masters. Z-Trip will be kicking off his seven week U.S. Headline tour on Aug 19 at the House Of Blues Sunset Strip.
Sunday, August 7th
DUMBLUCK - 11 a.m.
DUMBLUCK is a three-piece unit whose universal sound and song writing connects and speaks to the masses. With an energetic fusion of rock and reggae, some have dubbed DUMBLUCK "The Police" for the new millennium. Hailing from Los Angeles and Orange County, the seasoned musicians that make up DUMBLUCK are no strangers to the local music scene. The band features Jim Perkins on guitar and lead vocals, Phil Valdovinos on Drums and Johnny Baldaray on bass and vocals. Despite the band’s serious and gut checking lyrical content, DUMBLUCK delivers a live show that is fun and sometimes light hearted.
Bif Naked - 12:45 p.m.
The love child of two private school teenagers, Bif was born in New Delhi, India in 1971. She was adopted by American missionaries who moved her to Minneapolis, and Lexington, Kentucky, ultimately winding up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jumping between bands and a short lived marriage, Bif finally emerged as a solo artist in 1994. Bif Naked is known for her passionate punk-pop and ballistic live performances (including a stint on 1999's Lilith Fair, plus tours with the Cult and Kid Rock). Bif Naked is unleashing her latest album Superbeautifulmonster with a massive push in America. The album’s title is perhaps the best descriptive for the 13 tracks as well as the artist herself, “a brash alternative beauty, instantly recognizable and unforgettable”. The release date for the album is September 20th, the first release on the new Bodog Music label distributed by MRI/Sony/Red and follow up to Purge and I Bificus, both critically acclaimed albums.
Death by Stereo - 3 p.m.
Balancing chaos and consciousness is no easy feat, and few bands will ever do it as well as Death By Stereo has on the astonishing new disc Death For Life (Epitaph Records). Brutal and brutally honest, the set’s eleven songs come swinging at you like a bag of bricks as they embrace the extremities of hardcore and the fluid riffs of metal. Crafted with the help of Avenged Sevenfold vets The Factory (the production duo of Fred Archambault and Bruce MacFarlane), Death For Life marks a new sound and dynamic for Death By Stereo. They are currently on the Crimson tour with Alkaline Trio and Rise Against.
More acts to be announced and surprise musical guests will be featured daily. Fans should check EXPN.com for updated information.
