I'm in the market as my 07 Tundra gave up the ghost. Was 15 trouble free years of ownership. Had the 4.7L in Double Cab.

Now, things have changed in the truck market and am looking to the fine folks here for opinions. I'm not in the market for a diesel or a 3/4 ton/1ton (might change my mind on that, but most of my daily commute is 6km in town)

I only want one vehicle so no (buy a one ton and a ****box to beat around in).

Currently considering
2018-2020 Tundra 4x4 5.7L (waiting on a price on a used '18) if not I'll use cash incentives to get a 20. Loved my Tundra and it was super reliable, until it wasnt but like I said, my commute is tough on vehicles. Tundra resales are insane (like boats reaaly). Having one of the last japanese V8's might be a pro, but not sure.

2020 F150 either 2.7l Ecoboost, 3.5 Ecoboost or 5.0 Coyote. Like the Fords and they come pretty kitted out. Not my favorite style as they look terribly grandpa ish (except the Raptor). MPG on paper is killer, but would want to know real world reviews. Have heard negatives about towing MPG.

Thanks for any input. TBH these are the only two I'll consider. Not to be snide but I'm not a GM or Mopar fan.

I went in looking for anything but an F150. I came away with an F150. I was very impressed by how the 2015+ models drive compared to the older ones. The electronic steering and 10 speed transmission are really nice. It has great tow capacity. I get a real world mpg of 18-20mpg depending on how much I’m on the highway and about 12mpg while towing. And it was way cheaper than anything else I was looking at for the features I wanted. Now that they’ve worked out the kinks the 3.5l eco boost is a very impressive engine.

I had a f150 with the 3.5 eco. Mine had oversized tires and the gas consumption sucked. The numbers you see on paper are produced on a dyno in a vacuum. Having said that, I loved the truck. It had all the bells and whistles(although I never used the girly back up knob!) Only reason I sold it was my kids got to big and needed an SUV.

did the comparo of the big 3 in '17 of '16 tow package models. all v8.
dodge came back with what I would see to be the best tow'er of the group. downside is it's tach was 1k higher on the freeway at 70 than the other 2 so it would have burned a lot of gas.
ford was very nice and having a ford prior I was kind of tilted this way. liked the trailer backing feature.
in the end we bought a chevy z71 4x4. it had hands down the best ride of all of them.

now having lived with this for 3 years and 30k miles in hindsight I should have bought the ford. chevy is a good truck but the center console squeaks(on my 3rd lid warranty and still squeaking) and overall doesn't feel like it's going to be as quiet as my old '00 f150 that had 185k on the clock when I sold it.
averaging 16-17mpg's and 8-9 when towing our r23. no real hills to speak of but not flatland towing.

I have a 2011 f150 4x4 quad cab 3.5 eco 250k on it, i still get aprox 20 on highway, dont really tow anymore, as we live on the lake, but it pulls anything, without any effort, the new eco 3.5 is awesome, I would get a new dodge gen 3 diesel. the trucks are uber smooth and get around 27 mpg depending on gearing. they are by far the nicest riding and nicest interior of the trucks I have had many trucks, dodge, chevy, ford, 1/2 ton 3/4 and 1 ton, and would be a f150 for the motor, a dodge for the ride and fit n finish. and their new diesel in the 1/2 ton is really nice

I always had GM trucks prior but in 2018 I bought a 2019 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi and 3.92 gears. Tow rating for my truck is 11,400 with 1540 payload so towing my 24ft boat, I am within all specs. Plenty of power and great breaks, super comfortable truck. I love the engine/trans combo, super smooth & powerful, I do average 16mpg which is about 2 mpg less than my last 2016 GM truck.... night and day difference towing tho with Ram being the clear winner. If I went GM again it would be the 6.2 engine, the 5.3 just doesnt have enough grunt IMO and at least in my 2016 GM, the brakes SUCKED big time.
Would love to get another desiel but only thing I tow is the boat and it just doesnt pay for me to make that jump right now.

I'm not sure about some of the newer Tundra's but I've heard the older ones were pretty bad for fuel mileage as well when towing. I have a 14 EB F150 and it pulls my 09 VE with ease. Heck, my wife's 2010 EB Flex can pull my boat even though the boat is heavier than the vehicle's weight rating....it just doesn't like stopping.lol. That would still be my only gripe with my F150 but an electric over hydraulic upgrade would solve all of those issues.

The biggest thing to remember with EB are that they are one or the other. If you keep your foot out of it and drive nicely they can do quite well for fuel mileage....especially with the newer 10 speed transmission. I have the 6. If those turbo's are spooling then you're going through fuel a lot faster for sure but it will have no problem pulling that's for sure. The Ford's IMO have one of the nicest and spacious interiors out of any of the other comparable models.

this electric car thing is kinda strange, i bet they overheat. I just took a day trip, with a friend for work, who has a Tesla, it was kinda cool, but very stressful. as we had to plan stops, almost ran out of juice, and waited over an hour, to hit our 3rd charge coming back. Just not realistic as a single car. Also, they seem to be erratic on estimates. he says he never gets the correct distance per charge, even when he limps it around.

I settled on the Nissan Titan and couldn't be happier. I towed a 23MXZ with 500lbs of lead in it from Houston to north of Austin and averaged 10mpg. Driving around flat Houston, I do about 12mpg.

Not towing I am at 19-20MPG for everyday driving.

I agree. I honestly thought we'd be talking about which year Subaru Brat was the ugliest or who was the guliest Miss Universe from the 80'90's.

If anyone happens to read this though, I found a smoking deal on a truck but...it's the EcoBoost 2.7L

Only rated to tow around 7000lbs. If we get a trailer I'm going Livin Lite but what does anyone think of this for towing a 21' or even the odd 23' boat?

Personally, I like the 10K capacity my Tundra has for towing my 23' with 800 in lead.

Ford tow ratings are weird. Make sure to check exactly how it’s configured. The 2.7l can go up to 8,500lbs depending on how it’s set up. I’ve towed a Nautique 230 with the 2.7l economist with no issue. That’s probably a high 6000 to low 7000 rig loaded.

Thank Hal, not that you wouldve noticed or paid attention but would you say the mileage towing that rig was horrendous?

I just bought a new 2020 GMC Sierra Denali 4x4 with the 3.0 Duramax. I am averaging 12 mpg towing my LSV-23, and 28 unloaded on the highway. I get about 22 in town. So far very happy with the truck, and the tow performance. The 10 Speed seems to always find the right gear and doesn't do a lot of hunting.

2018 F150 with the 3.5 and 10 speed pulls our 2017 mojo just fine. Racked up about 3,000 miles this season towing and never lacks in power. Truck has 3.55 gears and is a 4x4. Avg towing mileage is around 10 but I have gotta up to 12 before. Unloaded combined is around 17 or 23ish on the highway. If you start getting above 70 mph the mileage starts to fall off. Our boat weighed in at 6940 lb on the trailer.
