I'm about to purchase a Krypt tower and speakers for my boat and I'm curious how most are running the speakers. I would like to be able to adjust the gain on them on the fly so I can turn them down if I want. I'm thinking the way to go is a separate amp with a gain control under the dash ? Other alternatives ?

JL has a nice gain control. I've got one of the amp for tower and sub and another on the amp for in boat speakers. Work really well to turn each area down quickly for picking up a rider or to save battery at the sandbar.

Down side is, that JL unit is JL only and specific to a couple models.

Wrong model. The correct model number for the JL Audio universal line driver & controller is the CL-RLC.

Most level controls say for bass gain only. will they do the highs if using a 2 channel amp for the tower speakers ?

If it states specifically 'bass' then it is the wrong part for a fullrange application.
A "bass control" would normally denote that the part is brand and model specific. It is the amplifier that determines whether the control functions as a linear bass level control or as bass boost equalization (big difference). Some amplifiers, such as a JL Audio, has various input configuration settings so that the remote controller operates just two channels or all channels, so it can be used for a variety of applications including fullrange or a bass-only level control (depending on the crossover selection on those channels).

I would think any kind of RCA input/output device would lower or raise the gain since its before it reaches the amp.

Ws420 is my vote! I love mine! I have every adjustment I need at fingers reach. Song comes on with more bass.. quick turn.. song starts and we just have the inboard on and I want EVERYONE around me to hear it.. quick turn and the towers are online. Some asshat is jumping my wake while I have a rider at tow.. grab the mic!!
