Is it even possible to make a surf wake with a direct drive, '80's era Nautique?

If so, what does it take, ballast wise?

Anyone got pics of the setup required and wake produced?

It's possible, you will need to worry more about having the right board over a ballast set up as no matter what you do your wave won't have a ton of push. I would through a 750 in the surf side rear corner as far back as you can get it, maybe even pull the rear seat, and have a few freinds sit on the surf side. You will have to go a little slower than what most run, say 9 or so. This will give you a softer wave which is why you will want the correct board for your wave. I have ridden a 6'1" duke behind a 2001 with very little weight in it. It was certainly doable. Anything that is long and buoyant would be your better bet. Some larger skims may have enough drive to keep ya in the pocket as well.

Be warned....me and a hand full of buddies sunk a 2001 twelve years ago messing around with the surf wake......
Too many people on one side, too many throttle surges, and too many Busch lights.

Starboard corner went under, bow went up and she rolled over. Luckily no one was hurt and we were somewhat close to shore. But yeah, be careful
