well im just about out of ideas as to what could be causing the clap. my engine started acting up. it started to get hotter than normal(shot up to 180) and i let it cool off and restarted the boat with no problems and idled back in bc i was clapping at higher rpms. today i pulled the valve covers and and pulled the pushrods which were all straight. the rocker arms were tight too. bolted everything back together and fired the engine. it was much quieter but still a little bit of noise. any ideas? stuck valve maybe?

How old is your impeller?

i think its 2 years old. i pull the impeller yesterday too. it looked fine. veins all in tact

You sure it's not a injector? My injectors on my excal are pretty noisy.

Here is my theory. When the engine temp went up your oil thinned out to the point of allowing your lifters to partially collapse which allows excessive valve lash.

I would sort out whatever caused your overheating in the first place, change the oil and try it out. If you are still getting noise after that try to figure out which side of the engine you are getting the noise from and pull that valve cover. Run the engine at with the valve cover off and try and figure out which is making your noise using a screwdriver with the tip on the head next to the rocker and the handle against your ear. After listening to to each of the 8 lifters use something like the wooden handle of a hammer to press down on the pushrod side of the noisy rocker (with the engine running at idle) untill you start getting more oil coming out of the top of the pushrode. Hopefully this will help free up the stuck lifter. This is definitely a shade tree method but often it works and will save you from pulling the intake off to replace a lifter. Good luck and try not to make a mess.

Definitely give it a chance to work free/sort itself out after an oil change before going through that whole procedure. I would probably try the next heavier weight oil when I change it as well to help boost pressure to raise the lifter. Good luck.

thanks. i brought the boat home a couple hours ago. i have all the stuff for the oil change i also bought a a quart of marvel mystery oil. seems like ppl swear by this stuff.

you might want to make sure that you didn't break a valve spring. its easy to check and will make some noise and will act like a stuck lifter.
