can you get a good sized wake with an outboard and if so is there different ways to do it ,maybe waight or a wakeplate.

Lots of weight. A plate just helps shape the wake. It will not make it bigger.

Keep the trim all the way down, and load it up.

The problem I've had with them is trying to hold speed.

My old outboard wanted to plane/come off plane right at wakeboard speed. We eventually figured it out about the time my buddy bought a Response. We parked the outboard and it never saw the water again until the day I sold it...

We just trimmed it all the way down and put as much weight in it as we could stand. Used 5 gallon water jugs in those days, all over the place. They fit perfectly in the walkway between windows, and the boat made a decent wake anyway as it was really heavy.

outboard wakes typically blow chunks. mine does. adding weight doesn't do the boat any favors in my case. I've found in all outboards and i/o's I've been in that if you trim it up a little bit after on plane it cleans up the top of the wake.

David hit the nail on the head too, maintaining constant speed can be tricky.

At the same time I love my outboard and appreciate having a boat that I can take out at any given time. I wouldn't give that up for anything.

I completely disagree with the Trim all the way down. On our old 19' Calais I used to start with the motor trimmed all the way down. Once on plane I would bring it up a bit and as Dwight said it would clean the wake up and make it nice and clean ramp. It also made the wake bigger. If you leave it all the way down it can leave a curl at the top of the wake. I did have a real hard time with keeping speed as the boat was in between plainning and not. Our Calais was more of an ocean boat so it had a nice deep V hull so it threw a huge wake when loaded....I still think it threw larger then my current boat. Only difference was the boat didn't like the weight coming out of the hole and I ended up messing the motor more then once.

It's harder if it's a two stroke. If it's a four stroke you can be OK. Getting out with extra weight is the tough part. Normal guidelines apply for lower pitch prop with more surface area. A hydrofoil on the engine helps you get out and maintain speed. Trim up about one quarter after you are on plane. Try more weight up front than you might think.
The hull shape determines the wake shape. Fine tune the weight location and trim settings to manage the wake.

i think every I/O is different but from my experience lots of weight in the front helps.
