He's very sorry.

I wonder if he's mostly sorry he got caught or about what he actually did.

I don't doubt that he is sorry and could not care less about who he wants to sleep with....that is between him and his wife.

But the statement was robotic and difficult to listen to at best. IMO, it did more damage in my mind. Before this, I felt like it was a tough situation that he cause for himself....but really didn't care either way. My thoughts were, get your personal life in order and come back and give us some great golf....

Now I just think....what a douche....

He's trying to save his sponsors, mainly Nike. Watch for all photos, all decked out in Nike. I'm sure it was that way before, but he's focusing on that now.

Nike is entering the snow market. Notice the team gloves that the women's snowboarders were wearing, as well as Shaun White. Rumor is, Nike expects to lose big time on their golf arena, and are targeting White to help them leap into the winter/snow market more than just boots.

Tiger wants to keep control, but can't

He's proabbly a little of both...sorry he got caught and sorry he did it.

My guess he'll do it again.

The rehab for this is setup like drug/alcohol.....and it's not he same. You can concieveably quit drinking or using drugs...you can't quit having sex, lol.

Imagine an addict being told, you can smoke crack once a day, but you have to control it, lol...give me a break.

He made a bad choice in not researching proper treatment for the addiction. A 12 step program will not work.

I could care less about his personal issues, none of my business.

Sam, is your statement based on fact or is it simply your opinion? Are you an expert in rehabilitation? People that are treated for OCD, say for having to flick a light switch 25 times everytime they leave a room. Are they told you can never touch a light switch?

There is no treatment for any addiction that is 100% effective for everyone. Most of the success lies in the willingness of the person.

We're talking about the guy that won, arguably, the most difficult tournament to win (U.S. Open) with a broken leg and torn acl. I think he will eventually overcome this (whether you say it is an illness or not) and pick up where he left off.

I believe it's the other way around. The PGA and his sponsors need him a whole hell of a lot more than he needs them. This seems to be an oversight when people want to debate his private life.

I think it is interesting to watch all of the people judge Tiger. I don't know him and his personal life is none of my business but it is amazing to see all these "perfect" people sit back and judge him.

We all know people who have cheated and there are many of those same cheaters who are judging Tiger. It doesn't make sense to me. Considering that divorce is conservatively at 50% of all marriage and domestic abuse (emotional and physical) is highly prevalent in many relationships, it just seems odd that everyone can sit back and pass judgement.

Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I disagree. Before Tiger, there essentially was no Nike Golf division. No clubs, no balls, and the clothing line was very small. Nike may endure some hits in the golf division, but it will still have much higher sales than in the snowboarding market. Simply look at the demographics between golf and snowboarding. How much does a snowboarder make when they win a big event compared to a PGA pro winning a tournament.?

Without Tiger, the Nike Golf brand probably fails. Nike needs Tiger much more than Tiger needs Nike.

When you ask to make a public statement to the public, bet your ass I will comment.... WTF are we supposed to do? He is carrying on dialog...

As I stated above, I could not care less about who he wants to sleep with or what is going on in his marriage. That is between him and his wife, keep me out of it.... But when he asks to go on television, radio and print media to make a statement that sounded like a high school kid reading something he had never even read before going up to the podium....it reflects bad IMO. I did not tune in to the statement, it was broadcast over the station that I was listening to prior.... He forced his way into my office...

So let me step up and yell at the top of my lungs.... "STONE HIM!"

Golf needs Tiger. Viewer ship is down substantially for tournaments that Tiger participated in last year and did not participate in this year. Companies that dropped Tiger stocks are down (when the stock market is relatively flat compared before his accident). Like a couple others said... Tiger is Nike golf. Without Tiger, Nike Golf fails.

Golf is what it is today because of Tiger.

I think the sports casters are funny. They keep saying Tiger owes them an appology. They also say that the other golfers are owed an appology from Tiger. I say Bull. They are all making a fortune because of Tiger. The tv coverage is greater. The purses are bigger. It is all about Tiger. Who he does need to appologize for is to his wife. Maybe let his fans and sponsors know his path for healing and returning to the sport if he plans to do so. Then maybe on the very end of that, he needs to appologize for making social/ racial a holes like Fuzzy Zeller sound partially sane for the stereotyping they had against the first real black golfer.

E.J., the public asked Tiger to make a public statement. Tiger would have just kept quiet. If Tigers wife does not go off on him and he ended up in the news, then you would have just heard the tale of Tigers wife divorcing him and everyone would have said, "oh well" too bad for them.

He goes out and wins his first tournament and everyone will forget all of this. Just like Kobe's rape trial and Ray Lewis and his murder trial.

Does Tiger really have a sex addiction? I think this is just him being seen to be doing something. Problem with people that become very famous and very wealthy is that to them, nothing is off limits.

And now he's been caught and lots of people are unhappy. So,off to therapy. Seeing beautiful women and wanted to bed them is lust. That's all it is. It is not necessarily an addiction. Otherwise every red blooded male is a sex addict. The difference with Woods is that he could actually get the women he lusted after. Most men just dream.

And Woods other problem is that he never bothered to endear himself to the public. He came across as stand offish, arrogant and aloof. But he was genius so it was ok. And now the fall. So he is human, just like the rest of us, and people,as is the spitefulness of human nature, are rubbing their hands with glee.

This press conference has not helped either.

Do you really think that Ray Leweis killed someone or Kobe raped that girl....because I don't....neither one.

I am the public and I didn't ask for Tiger to comment. Like I have said many times....could not have cared less. All I wanted is for him to start playing golf again.

I get so sick a tired of everybody hanging in his jock 24/7. Constantly over glorifing the guy and hardly ever making a criticism so as to not get 'cut off' from accessing his " greatness".

Dude has controlled the golf industry, if not golf media, for quite some time. Hopefully now, we can all see him for who he is.....A GREAT golfer and just a slightly above average guy outside of golf.

It is not about if Kobe or Ray Lewis did it. The point is those were serious allegations and the public moved on as soon as they started winning again. Same with Tiger. That is the point. All the fake outrage will be gone with the first win.

You must not listen to much sports radio or TV. They all have been busting Tigers chops for months for not coming out and speaking to them in public. They railed against him horribly for not doing so. I personally applauded Tiger for not talking because these people did not need to know. Now he finally comes out and gives them their public statement and people are on his case for doing that. He can't win. The stupid news people are the one who decided to cover it. Not Tiger.

The points of Tiger being Nike golf is helping the point. Tiger will not sell like he used to. All the companies that went all in with Tiger now need to find a different option or plan. Tiger won't sell like he used to.

Demographically I don't think it matters how much is won at a competition, that's not what's selling to the mainstream audience of that particular sport. Talk about demographics, I bet a major percentage of the golf market are wealthy, retired, loyal, religious 50+ yr olds who now have no respect for Tiger, maybe his game, but they won't support him or his sponsors. The second largest segment of the golf market is likely to be parents getting stuff for their kids. Contrast that to snowboarding, every parent knows who Shaun White is, and haven't heard of him ruining families or lives. If you're Nike, you need a plan B for whatever Tiger may do next.

Phatboy got it right. I cheated on my wife when i was married. Why? Because I was stupid and didn't have self control. I didn't have to pay the price like Tiger obviously he is in the lime light. I am sure there are many peeps on hear who have cheated or are currently cheating and still pointing the finger at Tiger. Check out the three pointing straight back at you. I pray for Tiger, he seems like a nice guy and obviously has talent to spare. Nobody starts off saying i am a cheater, temptation lurks around every corner, especially for someone with the wealth and fame that Tiger has. Could you honestly look in the mirror and say (If I were in Tigers position, with all those Hot women constantly throwing themselves at you could you stay faithful?) I know I would have a tough time, women have always been my down fall. I'd like to say I would take the high road and with Gods help I believe these days he would see me through. But I am smart enough to know that some days would be harder then others. I have made the decision to not have sex until I get married again and let me tell you there are days I'm like a heroin addict wanting to call up one of my old flings, in those circumstances I have a couple guys from church who are my accountability partners and they pray with me or even come hang out, shoot hoops spray me down with a cold hose lol kidding but this is going to be a tough road for Tiger and I hope he finds God in all this.

That is fine... I just think he came off like a douche....nothing more or less.

All engineered and done strictly on his terms. No questions allowed. That's why the Golf writers boycotted it.

AND on a Friday in the middle of the Accenture (one of the first sponsors to drop him) Matchplay Championship. You think that's a coincidence? Els went on record saying he's selfish. There were rumbling among other golfers as well, too scared to risk Tigers wrath by saying something.

I agree with the guys on Mike and Mile this am. The Accenture match play tourney got mentioned 50000x more this week because of this than it would have had it not happened. This is a non issue. To be honest, the fact that it was during the match play championships does not matter. THere is a tournament of some sort all most every weekend. Show of hands. How many people even knew a tournament was happening this weekend and how many people even knew which tournament was on? I know I didn't. Only reference I heard was due to someone quoting Els in regards to doing this during a tournament. Tiger is golf at the moment.

Tiger gave Accenture more exposure, a win, win for them and they were the only company mentioned during the tournament.

People hate you when you are on top. That's what this boils down to. Tiger's competition, for the most part, are glad he's gone. The purses have already been set and the chances of winning are increased.

Mexibro, look at PGA payouts pre-Tiger compared to now. Before Tiger, a good season was winning 1,000,000.00. They pay that for winning one tournament now. There was no 10,000,000.00 bonus for winning the FedEx cup, hell, there was not a FedEx cup. If you don't feel Tiger has had a major effect on golf today, you are a moron.

Jeremy so people are just going to simply quit playing golf because Tiger isnt "the man" anymore? Its not going to affect me playing, or the half million people in scottsdale next week for the Phoenix Open.

Greg Norman made almost 1.7 mil in 1995, the year before Tigers first win.

Steve Stricker was #2 to Tiger last year on the money list with a little over 6 mil

The Average NFL Salary in 1995 was $450000, last year it was $1.8 mil

Point being, salaries in all sports have had considerable leaps over the past 15 years, you cant credit Tiger with all that.

Jeremy, I completely disagree. I want Tiger out there. I want him in the field when I play well or win. I want to play against the best. Ask Padraig Harrington if he is tired of answering questions about if his 3 major wins still mean the same with Tiger not in the field. That would suck. The media and some hardcore fans put an asterisk on his major wins because Tiger wasn't in the field. Terrible, but true. For the most part we all want Tiger in the field. If you don't, you're soft.

So why have the press there at all? Release a statement on line, send it to all the newspapers, put it up on his website............

It's no surprise either that Woods caddy is one of the most obnoxious people on the tour. Wonder where that sense of entitlement comes from.

The whole exercise is carefully orchestrated damage repair, done through gritted teeth.

He is the face of what is wrong with golf! I would rather watch Boo Weekly, Steve Stricker, or Harrington any day of the week then have to watch Jim Nantz say "We now take you out to number 15 where Tiger is now comming out of the Porta Let after taking a most amazing dump!!!" If the PGA wants to boost ratings when he plays again, put him with Jesper! I would pay to see that!

My point exactly. The Average NFL salary by your numbers increased about 4 times the amount of 1995 as last year. Tiger Woods won 10.5 million, playing only 17 tournaments, last year not counting the 10 million he got for winning the FedEx cup. So that's about 20.5 million in 17 tournaments or almost 14 times the amount Norman won in 1995. You can win what Norman won in all of 1995 by winning the US Open or Masters today.

NFL's popularity cannot be banked on one player's success. The PGA tour can.

Amo, I coach hs boys golf in az and have been doing it for 16 years. To see kids going from being calm and level headed on the course to pitching temper tantrums an swearing up storm when they do something wrong is what I see wrong in the game of golf. I have asked kids why they act that way and alot of them have said, because Tiger does it and it fires him up. Well in my mind it makes you and him look like an ass!! Tiger cusses and throws fits on the course with the best of them. Hell he slammed a club so hard it went into the gallery and hit someone in a tournament. Real classy! I understand some people really like the guy and think he is the best ever. Fine , that is their opinion and they are entitled to it and I am entitled to mine.
As far as the pros I know. Not gonna name names but they both live in Az and are from Australia. And no, not Geoff O. Both have had good and bad years and are great guys but what they talk about that happens on tour is pretty shocking. Tiger isn't the only one with skeletons, that's for sure.

you definitely have a good perspective Steve. I see it in youth as well. I don't like it either. He represents us a bit poorly with behavior like that, no doubt. Don't get me wrong I've had my share of blow-ups out there, but I've never "accidentally" thrown a driver into the crowd. He talked the talk today, let's see if he can walk the walk. He's got A LOT of walking to do, imo.

I'm sure Ive practiced with your friends.

Good luck with the HS team. Let them know that real champions don't act like that.

Brett:

Buddhists do not worship anyone or anything. The Buddha himself said that he was not a god nor should he be worshipped. However, you may see people bowing to a statue of the Buddha; this is merely showing respect in the same way that one might bow to a King or Queen or salute the flag.

Buddhism is not a religion in the Western sense but is a philosophy of living as a way to improve your life and the lives of those around you.

The problem with this is it obviously didn't help Tiger.

What he did wasn't good, but I don't feel like he owes me anything. This is between his family, friends, and him. I never admired him because of how great of a family man he was, I admired him because of how well he plays golf.

I'm just wondering:
Why & How is Tiger's personal life affecting your life?
All he does is play golf.... or did.

He seems like hes about at sincere as his paper told him to be.....

He just needs to go win a couple tourneys then he wont care anymore and his old sponsors will come crawling back. If your win, you can be forgiven. Look at Kobe!

Because he forces his way on my radio, television, newspaper.... It broke into the radio station I was listening to in my office, I did not tune in. Then it was played over in its entirety at least once before I left at noon.

I got home and flipped on ESPN to see the haps....what do I get...TIGER, TIGER, TIGER....I turn it off.

How many more times did I hear it mentioned last night....

This this morning, same as every morning, I make coffee, get the newspaper off the porch and sit down for some SC.....WHAT....the entire statement AGAIN.....and more talk and discussion...

He called the press to release this statement and now I cannot get away from it.....

Go home, be with your wife & kids. Come play golf when you are ready... Answer questions, don't answer questions....I COULD NOT CARE LESS.

But to have to listen to this robotic statement over and over and over and over... I have said when all this came up, I don't care who a celebrity sleeps with.... But this.... "I owe all of you an apology..." WTF...you don't owe me chit.... Maybe you owe your wife, kids, family, friends whoever an apology.....but I don't know you.... I like to watch you play golf...

Get your life in order and come play golf....until you are swinging a club on some grass, stay off my television screen....I don't tune in to listen to you talk....and from this small sample, it is a good thing that you can golf....because public speaking is not going to pay the bills.

Sounds like you have more of a problem with the media and Tigers sponsors then Tiger himself.

Trust me Tiger would rather of not talked and would rather be left alone and have no news coverage, but the media would not leave him or his family alone.

Exactly Jeff. The media is the one. Tiger basically finally said, if you want to hear me say it out loud, I will be at such and such to give a statement. Those people chose to be there.

Why did Tiger not have to give an apology when he had knee surgery? That took him away from golf (thus hurting his sponsors)?

If she cheated on him and he decided to quit golf for a while, would people "expect" an apology for him leaving golf?

This is not about golf at all. This is about a bunch of crappy news people needing a story. If were about golf, no matter how he left the game the people should be upset with him.
