I am new to this group, and have read a ton of old posts regarding older boats and which ones people recommend. I am looking for a boat to primarily wakeboard and wakesurf behind (i consider myself around the intermediate skill level). I have several boats in the general vacinity that I am looking at (price level around 23K).
1. 2000 tige 21V for 23K- ~400 hrs, good condition, TAPS w/no ballast
2. 2001 Centurion Air Warrior 22900. waiting to hear on the hours and accessories, etc
3. 1998 Centurion V-drive 15K ~336 hrs w/350 merc mag 280+hp
4. 2001 Malibu Wakesetter VLX 17K 325 hp ~350 hrs
5. 2001 Centurion councourse 20K

My other option is a 1995 MC Maristar that needs almost everything redone. the transmission is perfect, but I would be either rebuilding the motor (it is 285 hp now) with much more lower end torque to help with the larger guys getting up out of the water, or putting a new engine in completely. I would also plumb all new ballast system, new guage panel, upholstery and tower. So I could make it as custom as I would like for about the same cost as those other boats. My biggest question on the mastercraft is how well do the do transitioning them into a wakeboarding/surfing boat (I know that they are the same hulls as the early X-series).

Anybody/everybody please give me your opinions! I need to make an EDUCATED decision. And if there arwe other boats that you know of for sale please let me know, they do not need to be there companies or models. I am looking for a boat to last me the greater part of the next decade. I am not afraid of elbow grease so a bit of work isnt a scary thing for me

Of those choices I would go with the 01 Wakesetter. $17k is a great price if the boat is in good shape. It will have the best wake, features, and also hold it's value better IMO. All the other boats just don't seem like that good of deals.

If you look around, you can find an 01-02 SAN or X-Star in your price range.

I would look and test drive the Malibu first. I would take it to a local dealer and have them check it out. Thats a big chunk of coin to shell out only to find that it may have a bunch of problems. I would stay away from the fixer upper. Me personally I would want to hit the water and not have to work on it first.

I have looked up and down and can't find any X-stars or SAN in that range. Other than CL, the classifieds here, and boat trader where else is a good place?

^^ Don't search SAN, look for Supersports... we got ours for 18k a few years ago... can find find them under 20k all the time

X-star = 205v when searching

old Wakesetter = sunsetter

Out of the listed boats I say hit up that wakesetter. Like Vandy said it will hold its value and it is a solid boat that will throw up a money wake. I saw your in AZ, this is a 23' tige that is for sale up here in UT for a killer price. Since i saw you had Tige on the list

I would run from that year Maristar. They drove like tanks & had a known porpoising issue when at speed..... nothing a trim tab wouldn't fix, but you'd have to add it yourself.

The VLX could be a good option. What tower is on it? I'd stay away from the Skylon or ProFlight.

In fact, stay away from anything made by Metcraft (Illusion or possibly the Tige tower).

Every one of those boats listed is priced too high other than the Wakesetter which is a great price. Make sure it is a Wakesetter and not a sunsetter though. That year Sunsetter VLX had the diamond hull.

That Sanger is a great looking boat other than the tower. I have been eying that one for a while.

That Tige in Utah definately seems like a pretty good deal. The 2000 for 23K seems way too high. I agree on possibly holding out for a older SAN. THey seem to have less issues and there are tons of write ups on here about fixes and adds. The VLX also seems like a pretty good deal and they do seem to hold their value. Hopefully I will be in the same boat next year. Only bad thing about AZ is people tend to ask alot for their boats and the good deals go quick.
Since you are in AZ, there is a Sanger at Integrity RV in Mesa that had low hours and was on ebay but didn't sell. You might give them a try and see what you could pick it up for. Good Luck!!

The tower on that V210 in Portland is JUNK. Don't bother, you will regret it if you use it for riding behind or stack it full of gear.

I got a 98 Tige 2200V last year for a little over 17K. It had ~300hr, near perfect vinyl, and was obviously very well cared for. If your 2000 has perfect pass and a good tower it is somewhat reasonable but I would still walk away from anything over 20-21K on a tige of that vintage. Here are my recs
1. Make sure it is fuel injected. Avoid carbs
2. Make sure the running gear is straight and not bent, even if it runs smooth on the test run (don't ask me how I know this one :-(
3. It should be obvious that the owner babied the boat. Don't buy someone else abused boat
4. I assume you are buying it with cash. If so consider financing another 7-10K and getting a 30K boat in the 2005+ year range. I wish I had done that now that I have $23K (after a new Razor tower, perfect pass, Acme prop and straightening the running gear) invested in a 12 year old boat.
5. Don't sweat $250 here and there. You will spend waaay more than that on gas and other stuff to keep the lifestyle engaged.

I am planning on selling/trading in my current boat, a 1989 Four Winns 200 Horizon I/O w about 300 hrs. Tower, lights, tower speakers, new dash, custom wrap around seating etc. Not even sure how much I can ask for it. Anyone have an idea about trade ins v private sale?

The Malibu looks like a pretty decent deal out of the boats you have listed. It is a pretty solid boat too. If its got the Titan tower then I jump on it.

Just looked at the 01 Malibu on Craigslist. Does have the Skylon tower, but seems to be a pretty good deal if it is mechanically sound. Seems like the buyer may go lower since he is looking for payoff. I would definately get it inspected though. I looked at a boat on CL once and the guy said it was perfect mechanically but still took it in to get a $100 inspection. It had water in the gear oil a bent prop shaft and a bearing that had to be replaced and the motor had to be removed to do so. So that $100 inspection saved me $4000. Just my 2cents, but if that VLX checks out, I would be all over it.

As far as your boat goes, you may get $5000 for it depending on the size motor. We looked at a 98 fourwins with a V8 and 400 hours and they were asking $5400 and that was last May. Usually I/O's get around $4000-$5000 if set up for wakeboarding. We paid $5200 for our Maxum and have been happy with it, but part of me wishes I would have done the V Drive route. We have put about an extra $2000 in ours since we bought it, but it is a solid boat.

It has a 5.7 L V8, but it is an 89 not a 98. I also have found some SAN in the 20-22 range for a 1998-2003. Most people have sounded pretty high on those but i have never been in or behind one. thoughts?

I think almost everyone would say go with the SAN if you can find a good deal. The one in Mesa for 17K I would jump all over if I had the money.

I am planning on looking at the wakesetter, but am looking more and more into the SAN unless I can get the tige's (20V) price down intot he 18-19 range. It looks like for most of the SANs I would have to buy an out of state boat from a dealer. I would plan on flying in and checking it out, but have toyed with the option of having the dealer (at my expense) get a certified mechanic to go through the boat and do an official write up, as well as request a warranty from the dealership. It may be for naught unless they are a certified SAN dealer. Also shipping... anybody have recommendations on that?

They are local in Mesa and really nice people. The Sanger has a ballast system and alot fewer hours. Tige's are great boats, but after researching and reading posts on here, the Sanger 215 seems to be a really solid boat wake and ride wise. I have also read they have a great surf wake. I would still lead to the SAN first since I have only heard good things about them.

I have a 99 tige 21V riders and absolutely love it, if you have any questions, hit me up
Very roomy with a 100" beam and throws a very nice wake. I go back and fourth between my tige and a friend's 205V-hull X-star and have no issues with the wake on mine at all. The surf wake is really great with only a little extra weight (500 in the port locker)
