Halfway through the summer our lxi began having starting problems. When you turn the key it makes a "ping" sound. After a few turns it will eventually start. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Solenoid?

Thanks for the help.

Do you know the batt voltage while this went on? Have you checked cables/terminals?

IIRC Solenoid usually doesn't work intermsittently, usually takes a crap and thats it.

I'm not sure of the voltage at the time. We replaced the batteries and checked all the cables. One of the terminals was corroded, but we cleaned that up.

One way to test the solenoid is to jump it with a screwdriver. If the engine cranks strong then you know its the solenoid not kicking full power down to the starter.

Know where the starter is? Starter pos wire runs from solenoid to starter. Follow it up and give her a jump. Jump the two big posts on the solenoid.
