I just changed the plugs on my boat tonight and noticed a small amount of oil on the threads of most of the spark plugs. The electrodes themselves looked normal with no oil deposits.
The boat has been running okay, it hasn't been hesitating or misfiring like it would if oil were making its way into the combustion chamber. I decided to change the plugs simply because they have 325 hours on them and I've started to smell unburned gas in the exhaust.
There is another issue I had the other day that may or may not be related.... The other day my oil pressure was running unusally high. In fact it was all the way at 80 psi. I checked the oil and it was fine. If anything it was a 1/2 quart low, so it couldn't have been too much oil in the system to cause the high pressure. I called my dealer while on the water and explained the issue. They told me it was probably a bad sensor or gauge.
Could the high oil pressure be related to oil on the plugs? Could the oil on the plugs simply be fogging oil that was still on the threads? The boat is 4 1/2 years old and has 325 hours on it. All the fluids have been changed regularly since the day I brought it home (I am the original owner).
Do I have something the be worried about here?
