Where I ride, the river changes direction a lot which affects the lighting in a manner of seconds. When shooting a set I can see about 4-5 different sun angles. My pics come out pretty good when the sun is in the right spot but I am having trouble in the slightly back lit or side shadow situations. I can make it a little better in photoshop but obviously that takes time.

Are there any techniques that I can make quick changes to adjust for sun angle?

A problem with my last set, is that in side or slightly backlit situations the rider came out pretty dark but the boat prop wash and spray came out overexposed. I can provide examples if need be.

Your best bet is to shoot in manual and expose the rider, your gonna lose the highlights in those situations, but honestly that light isn't very good to begin with. Just try to take advantage of the light when its good and practice technique and composition when its not so good.

Don't blow out the whites and learn the highlite/shadow tool in your photo editor.
