I got the frontside and backside surface 180 but how can I push myself to do just 180 jumps in the air?

My boyfriend wanted me to do the toeside 180 in the air but I was a little scaried.....any tips?? Should I jump high like normal and then rotate? Or should I ease into it??

Please help because I'm scaried of this one!

try this exercise first....start behind the boat inside the wake. Slow the boat down so a surgace 180 will be easy for you. If you are regular, start on the right side of the boat and edge to the left heelside. At the middle do a surface 180 which will put you on your switch toeside edge. Edge on your toes to the other side of the wake. When you get to the other wake turn back to the middle (you will now be switch heelside) and when you get there, do another surface 180 and go back to your starting point (regular toeside). Do this a few times to get into the rhythm of transferring your handle to the opposite hip. Keep your handle low and centered as you do this. It's the same thing when you take it to the outside of the wake. Just make sure you wait until your highest point in the air before you transfer the handle to the opposite hip and turn the 180. Don't spin the 180 while you are still riding up the wake. The surface 180 drill will help you. And when you try the 180 from outside the wake, you don't need to cut out far....5-8 feet will be plenty. You need pop, not speed.

Thanks for the tips. So, I should be trying the frontside surface 180 outside of the wake (both sides) correct? Not directly behind the boat? or on top of the wake?

My bf only does front side surface 180 on top of wake, so the board won't catch.

I'm riding finless now, so I'm ready to try mine on the outside.

I'm a little scaried to do frontside surface 180's because I slightly tore my pec muscle when I ate it a few times.

When I cut outside of wake, do I need to coast a bit so there is not much tension before I try the 180? That's what I do for the backside 180?

More tips, please!

Slow the boat down to do this at first. Go back and forth doing the 180's directly behind the boat. Let us know how it goes

You can also try one wake 180's. The best way to start is to slow the boat down and then practice popping off one wake with enough air to rotate your board 180 degrees. Don't try to clear the wake at first just get used to the feeling of rotating your board in the air. Once you get your pop just let go with your lead hand and your body will start the rotation. Okay, if I do the surface 180 drill directly behind the boat, will the board catch and give me a nice face plant? What is a good speed? I normally ride at 22 mph. How can I avoid face planting?

When practicing the wake 180's, should I land goofy right away? Or should I just practice rotating the board and then once I got that, try the full rotation?

Sorry if that sounds confusing.

Face planting is ALWAYS a possibility going slow will make the 180 easier to do.

I did my backside surface 180, frontside surface 180 and even did TS 180. And I had one of the worst face plants ever to date. My breasts hurt so bad!!! And my face went numb... and someone I bite my lip and it was bleeding!!!

Did you slow the boat down? I did such a bad face plant last spring (and I do many of them) that I got a black eye. Dont rmemeber what I was doing, but I remember the black eye.

Well my bf didn't know I was about to do the surface 180 so no the boat wasn't slowed down...lesson learned!!!

I'm fine now. Except my skin is still sensitive to touch!

sometimes you wonder if you still have eyeballs!!

You have to wait until the boat is the speed you want it. Keep giving thumbs down until you get it, then do the drill. It will really help. I did the drill today as a first day back ride after my fracture.

Hey Audrey,

How is your one wake jump, switch riding and ollies? Sounds like you got your surface 180's down those 3 things can really help facilitate the one wake 180 faster with less pain : )

I can understand that it would be scary...if you try a toeside frontside 180 they are generally the easiest because the boat helps you bring your board around naturally...

You can start just outside the wake with an easy approach

just ride off the top of the wake dont have to do anything except stay still and hold your body only need a couple inches of air once you achieve getting a little bit of air..then have a go at it...

you can also try a longer line to give you more " Highway" between you can get comfortable riding away switch and not have to deal with the backside of the second wake..

Keep your chin up, looking in the direction your going
Ride off the top of the wake
Turn your board and body by Opening your shoulders and hips to the boat at the same time (remember air first then turn)
Land on your switch HS continuing your edge across to the otherside( looking where your going)

Always keep your chest up and shoulders back : )

Go whatever boat speed makes you feel comfortable, half the battle with wakeboarding is getting comfortable, being comfortable brings on confidence which leads to more success!

I usually ride between 21 and 22mph, but if I'm working on surface tricks that might involve face plants or the like, I will usually have them slow the boat down to 18 or 19mph (the face plants are WAY less painful) until I'm comfortable with my ability to complete said trick. Then I have them speed up a little and try it at a faster speed and keep increasing the speed until I'm confident at my normal speed.

And congrats on your ts180!!!
