so i have been trying to do toe frontside 180's off axis with a melon grab i guess. anyway i have slowly been getting to the "off axis" point, slowly. well today i just decided to throw it like i had a pair, well that didnt work out so well. never made it back on axis came down on the lip of the wake , flat on my back head slightly pointing toward the boat with my back on the wake lip,and of course the first thing to hit the water was? my heel edge. yah felt great, blacked out for a sec and can barley look to change lanes while driving, fun fun. so the kicker is im wearing my 08 ronix cells right, well as im lying there in my mild pain and slight concussion i realize my right foot is free with something on it. its my freakin inner liner on my foot. look at my binding and both top and bottom laces are cinched tight. wtf? how the heck did i rip out of these things. anyone else have this happen? well i got a 1000 of ibp on board im gonna try and sleep.

...sorry bro....that sounds painful. Its amazing what happens to bindings when sudden forces are applied. Hope you have a speedy recovery......oh you got to try a helmet (its worth it).

Hey Bryan,

That sucks dude. Those crashes are why I rock the lid... I slam my head all the time and i swear it helps. Don't ride for 3 or 4 days... let the melon swelling come down...

See ya

That's nothing. A friend of mine crashed the other day on a similar trick (no off-axis...at least no on purpose). Tore his brand new SS PB Floyds to shreds:

On the bright side, he's getting a brand new pair...

Ronix had an issue with some of the 07 linings coming out. They fixed that for 08 bindings. It happened to me on a 911 that I didn't pull back in. :-(

Get some gorrila glue slap it in there and start riding again. :-)

Bryan,

Ha, the photo makes it look worse than it was. He got worked, but not nearly the carnage that those bindings suggest.

That is a nice pic, though, isn't it.

I did something similar, took a tumble on the whip, felt my foot loose but something still on my foot and thought this is not good.....
This was the result, just about 10 rides and my new (old) Roam is retired. :-(

a lttle bird told me at shift change that they were in a comp ski boat that ran aground East of the rock bridge on Grant Line

Its a little shallow up there. my dads jetboat with about a 6" draft ran aground up in there when I was a youngster...

Glad to hear you're OK Bryan, can you drive the truck w/o looking left or right???

If you feel ready we might go out on Wednesday

NewJ where you at??

Cool,

it's always best to crash on the first day of a 4 day, I hear ya on the youth, I feel like I have way more chance of getting hurt boarding than dirtbiking after this summer, but its just water right???

"man to be 18 again"

Perspective is a funny thing. I just clicked on Bryan's profile, and I'm thinking "man, to be 30 again"...

not to pry dan but how old are you? i dont want to offend any of the "older guys" still riding, i know i still have some good years ahead of me and should just suck it up. i have been thinking though...........i love wake boarding so much i want to be not only involved in the sport till im in diapers again but i want to ride as long as i physically can. so my question is when is the line of progression going to cross the line of getting hurt. you know, when is it time to just say thats it im going to slow down and just ride for the love. im not trying 3, 5, batwngs, off axis trick's etc........i guess your body will tell you enough is enough. but im afraid if you push it over the edge just to ride harder now im going to lose 20 years of good times behind the boat with my friend and family. does that make since? my problem is i cant slow down, sort of a no pain no gain theory i guess. lol. what do you guys think?
Old    Josh (romes)      Join Date: Sep 2006       09-16-2008, 10:15 AM Reply
B you just slow down the progression. instead of trying to learn 10 new things a summer you slow down and add 2 or 3. progression is a natural thing but you have the ability to dictate how fast it happens.

get really good at what you already know. take the thigns you do and add your own twist to them, make them your own. do them different than everyone else. that's still progression. and when the times right and you're comfortable try something new. but dont trip on stickin it the first day. just go slower.

I know but it's an 05 board, I know it was new when I bought it but I didn't think the guys at Hyperlite would believe me.}

The year doesn't matter. They replace a 6 year old board for me with a brand new current year and model board. Just call them.

hey Bryan,

I think that question is answered by many factors. Here are a few off the top of mind.

1. Do you have health insurance?
2. Do you care if you have #1?
3. Are you the sole bread winner of a family?
4. Can you do your job in crutches?
5. Is your body in decent physical condition to take the abuse of crashes?

I am constantly thinking about some of these issues. One reason why I ride with a helmet is to reduce the risk of concussions and ear drum blow outs. Although it does not eliminate the risk, I feel it reduces it.

As for try new tricks, I have seen a guy do in his ACL on a w2w gone bad. You can blow your knee on almost anything. In this sport, if you really want to advance your riding, I think you you must accept the fact that you will have one or more serious injury, such, ACL, MCL, ear drum blow out, cracked\broken rib, sprained or broke ankle. I think if you talk to any rider with more than a handful of spins or flips, they all will say they have had one of those.

It is really no pain, no gain in this sport. For me, it is and has been worth it. But, my knee is so bad now, it hurts pretty much 24-7. I have no cartelige left in my right knee!... so now I wonder how I will be when I am 60! At some point I have to get a new knee or shut it down . My doc says I can ride on an arteficial knee though.

I think in the end, in order to get to the advanced tricks of the this sport you have to accept that reality that your body will get abused.... period.

im with you mark. i have to say those 5 questions come in to my head all the time.

the 1 that sticks out the most though is #4, the answer is NO!!!! im a fireman, i love my job more than anything and i worked my a-- off to get it. there is no way i could handle a desk job bro. i have been thinking alot about this lately. im not saying im going to lay around and live in fear. "im just sayin" i have been thinking twice before i do a new trick or make that pass on the mx track. most people they treat there bodies as a temple, right? well mine has been a freakin play ground for the past 30 years, those are some hard miles. but hey you could get hit by a bus tomorrow right. i just lost a bro from work last month, got hit in an intersection while riding his bike. done.

Oh man... I forgot you are a fireman...that is a tough call. "Most" wakeboard injuries that require surgury sit you out hard for 6 weeks. After that usually you can weight the leg, knee, shoulder, ankle, etc. I am sure you get at least one set of time on dis-abled leave with pay don't you? If not, that is a super hard call to make. If you fell at home off a ladder at home would you loose your job? If not it is sort like that... to a degree. More than 2 times, they will probably question what you are doing in your spare time.

Buy knee braces?

Bryan don't forget there are always great opportunities on light duty like building inspections, weed and vehicle abatement, maybe you could even be the prevention person who does school talks all week to little kids about not playing with matches.

I broke my wrist dirtbiking and was on light duty for three months of pure hell last summer, at least its an option for us but i wouldn't recommend it and will try and avoid it in the future but I have a feeling I will be back sometime

Sorry to hear about your buddy in Patterson, tragic...

GO BIG, you only live once!

thanks scott, its been rough the past few years i have been on 5 years and been to 4 funerals, with 1 line of duty death. its been a tuff few years.

as for the light duty thing, we have it just dont even want to ever go there, i'd go crazy. but yah its better than burning all that sick leave, we get 100% sick leave cash out for years of service and afer that its 50% cash out. so its good to stay healthy.

im looking into cti mark. we have a local rep here in sc and he is working with me and a couple buddies trying to get us into custom cti's. will see though its not hard to get them prescribed, got that. its just hard to convince to insurance company you need custom vrs off the shelf. about a 2g difference.

Yeah, I feel you guys on the whole cost of progression issue. My feeling on the subject is that we take risks every day (driving, crossing the street, exposure to germs, etc) so complete safety is an illusion.

Wakeboarding is a blast but, like most things in life which are worth while, does have some risks associated with it. I feel that, in general, the more quickly you want to progress the more chances you must take, the more chances you take, the greater the risk of injury.

I want to progress as much as the next guy, but also want to maximize my "good years". So I take the long route. Break tricks down into constituent parts and practice them ad nauseam. If I don't understand or can't visualize a trick, or just plain don't feel it, I don't attempt it. My buddy Gordon asked me (after putting up with me practicing riding cuffed, ollie bs 180s and one wake bs 180s for like 6 months), when will I know when it's time to take it w2w. The answer was I don't know. I realize it probably sounds ridiculous, but I just sort of screw around work on fundamentals and wait for inspiration to take it to the next level.

The downside is that it's taking forever to progress (after four years of riding I'm just now starting to feel good about my threes and bs 180s). The upside is that I'm having a blast and have only had some cuts, sprains and a mild concussion so far.

I also do some off the water training to strengthen muscles around my joints to help the ligaments keep them together when things do go wrong.

Just my $0.02, YMMV.
