What engine mods/upgrades have you done to your eng or boat? Anybody switched out there stock Intake for a Hi Performance Intake? Trying to help my 351 breathe a better and make a little more power? What have you done?

These are mine:
Air cleaner
Electronic ignition (fantastic upgrade)
drain plugs/back of the risers-
(for daily draining)
Cool can (fuel cooler)

ford intakes are notoriously bad. I'm looking at an Ed. Perfomer RPM dual plane intake man. supposedly about 25HP increase from the improved flow, mostly on the low end. perfect for hole shot...

Also, gt40 heads ported and flow tested. Working on this one, but i think i found the set i want. just need to get em cleaned up bit. THinking about roller rockers, but not sure if its necessary.

I'll put a mild cam in it as well. prolly max it a 6K rpm. Can't wait for spring! I need to start getting my parts together as I'm about done researching it.

I 've got a couple SBF head flow charts, etc, if you need something referrence. I'd like to see 200cfm out of the heads, but anything will be better than the 100'ish numbers for the stock E7TE. Fun stuff! versatile engine with plenty of room for performance upgrades.

No vapor lock...cooling the fuel is a old racing trick for more power 5-10hp?

Hey 882001...what prop?

sweet. i'll have check into one.

I threw an Acme 537 on mine. 4 blade 13.5" x 15" I think. True, it is night and day difference. But, for a couple hundy more i'll take the horsepower as well. Why not?

good thread. we like horsepower in texas!

nacho don't spend to much time porting a set of stock heads. For a 351W, I would get a performer intake, port match the intake and exhaust. However if you want to spend a couple extra hours grinding there is a small bump in the exhaust port, grind that down flat and then just clean/smooth rest of exhaust port. The head will work almost as good as a GT-40 head for hardly any money out of your pocket.

I never saw much performance gain going to roller rockers, but they look nicer than the old stamped steel ones. Also, I will be selling a couple of motorsport cams, ati balancer and other ford parts pretty soon.

It was the gt 40 heads I was going to work on. Good stuff tho.

Keep me posted on your parts!

so you're saying port the stock heads or the GT40s?

Sorry I read your other post and thought you were going to have the heads gone over and ported.

I would gasket match and then grind the hump in the exhaust down and I would do that before I bought a set of gt-40s.

yea, i noticed the specs on the two aren't that different at all. Looks like i would pick up .06 on the intake valve. and exh is the same.

i think i may have found a stupid deal on some 40s with most of the work already done. if not, i definitely woudn't drop the coin on another set...

I assume you have a lightning. done anything to it?
Old    Nacho (denverd1)      Join Date: May 2004       01-31-2008, 9:19 PM Reply
and do you know the specs on stock 351W camshaft? lift primarily...
Old    Ewing (johnsvt)      Join Date: Dec 2006       02-01-2008, 4:35 AM Reply
If you can pick up a set of gt-40's cheap then that is good. I do not know the size of a stock 351w cam, but I have a motorsport b303 and z303 for sale I will probably ask 75 a stick, obo.

jet - LOL!! give me two weeks. its a no brainer dude, slap it on. its the best upgrade you can do for the money. If you stopped there, you still have noticeable improvement.

ewing - i'm on it. heard about the 303 cams. I'll check the specs on those and see which I want.

I would like to point out that a boat motor is a constant load engine, unlike a car engine. Being that it is a constant load engine the fuel mixture needs to be on the rich side (Stinky, polluting, gas guzzling) or dead on (Ideal). If the mixture is lean, the valves will burn up quickly along with causing pre-ignition damage to the rest of the engine. Make sure you know what you are doing when it comes to getting the mixture correct as you can NOT do it by the seat of your pants. It is going to take a 4 gas analyzer, or even better a wide band O2, and a way to apply load (Dyno) as you change jets, emulsion tubes, metering rods etc. depending on which carb you are using.

I must say I LOVE magazine horse power. With it you can build a 1000hp small block for only a few thousand dollars LOL

Horse power is expensive...props are cheap!

You can get close on the fuel mixture the same way most track guys do. Run down the water a bit. Stop, pull a couple of plugs, read them, re-jet, start over. Has always worked for me.

Jet, I'll make sure I have the camera out when i start on it. We talked about taking the boat out this weekend, so I don't want to tear into it just yet.

Peter, already bought a prop. props get expensive.

Nacho..just got through watching horsepowerTV. Neet racing trick they just talked about. They say tape off the intake and spray paint the bottom with 500 or 1200 degree WHITE engine paint ($5) with several coatings. This stops or slows the heat exchange from the engine to the intake and keeps the fuel and intake cooler. They went even further saying paint the top of the intake black and that dissapates? More heat. But that wont look very cool. I'll be doing this also. SEND PICS! Jet

Well I've been running 550's on the side engine and a 400 in back and a 100lbs in the front..but! I have been experimenting with other ways. Last summer I put a 550 in the rear and 300 or so up front and Its almost as big. So more experimenting this spring. What are you running?

Yes Ice It! Dude Im pushing 1600 lbs sometimes in a 19 year old boat! (250 hp, 3-blade prop)I need extra hp! 4-Blade coming soon!I make my own cool can with a insulated thermos (as large as you can go) 15 ft of copper tubing, drill 2-holes in the top and then run the tubing in a coil shape down into the thermos, then I poke a tire steam thru at the bottom and take out the vavle and put the cap back on (thats for draing later) Then spin the top on and your ready! What makes mine better that the store bought brands are that mine holds water. theirs drains the water as it melts (warming it back up). By holding the water and adding ice every couple of hrs, keeps it cooler longer and adds volume or density to the cylinders adding hp! Works great!

p.s. Sorry No pics..but my tower is folded down in the garge and It blocks the engine cover, so I cant open it and snap a pic. But Its getting warmer outside. Jet

jet No, they weren't too bad at all. Interesting concept on the cool can.

gbugg, which cam did you use? trying to decide which one I need.

spent the afternoon tearing it down. primed and painted a few parts. going all black.
Got the rockers off, heads are still there. tomorrow... Should be getting the gt40s on Monday, so i'll know a lot more then./\

Any tips on the getting the intake off?

No That will be easy..taking the risers off to me is the hard part. Your half way done. Keep the pics coming!

I can't remember nacho I will have to look and see. But what I did was called summit racing told them what I was doing and what components I was using and the rpm range and they told me the best cam for my application. I can tell you it was nothing super drastic.
