Anybody interested in a wake surfing comp. in San Diego? Centurion along with Area 53 are trying to do a wakesurfing event down in San Diego. Centurion will be the official tow boat, and Area 53 will be the official sponsors of the event, but we are welcoming all other who wish to participate to join in.

We'll have a regular boat as well as a goofy boat (counter rotaing prop). I have yet to contact the man - Jeff Walker to get his input on this event.

We really want to pull this off. The sooner the better. Hopefully by mid summer if we sucure all permits and location.

Sean Ward - you know the water depths in the area - give us your input.

Well with San V. closed there is only one viable option-Mission Bay. Carlsbad lagoon which would be the best location is sponsored by Malibu and the only area at El Cap suitable for a contest is on the backside of the lake and the permits will be next to impossible to get with the additional strain on capacity.
...and even if you could IMO a contest at El Cap would have a severe negative effect on wakesurfing's standing within San Diego's watersport community due to an already overcrowded situation.

That's great Alan! We have so many manufacturers and enthusiasts down there. If you remember the '03 World's...Centurion drew people from as far away as the SD area up to Merced. Are there any fresh water lakes that are within an hour or so drive of the San Diego area? Guys how far away is Lake Elsinore from San Diego?

Let me know how I can help Alan and I'm on it.

i think el cap, san v, and the channel at elsinore can be rented for the day (the channel at elsinore would be the cheapest for this)

cool - atleast ther seems to be some interest here. Jeff - after the next event I'll be consulting you and we'll get this thing running.

We need to have more input to make this thing happen. so any suggestions - please post, other wise it will never happen.

what about holding this event in salt water?

I know California Skier has mentioned that they would like to host/sponsor some wakesurfing events. I'm not sure of the details, but I believe they own/control the channel at lake Elsinore.

thanks Along,
let'd keep them comming, other whise this event will not happen.

Centurion and us are trying to see if it will be benificial to hold an event in San Diego. So who ever is interested - let's hear it.

All the events this year are in Nor Cal, we are trying to bring it down to So Cal. Most of the riders that come travel from north county SD - we are just trying to bring it to you.

if there is no feed back - no event.

Sweet! I moved to LA about 2 months ago (from Nor Cal) and would love to start meeting some people down here. SD isn't too bad of a drive :-)

the salt water spots arent that great to ride.. in fact san diego really sucks for riding... but hey, its home for now..

here is a run down of the local lakes..

-el cap can get blown out..but can be rented out for the day..

-channel at elsinore is a mixed bag.... california skier is really great to deal with but the chaneel may to too shallow..

-carlsbad / mission bay is salt water and blown out most the time.

i really think the best bet would be to rent san v for the day (cost about $750)... they have 2-3 courses that are protected and shoreline.. drawback is have to ferry peeps over to the observing area..

It would be GREAT to have a come here in SD. As far as San V is concerned (my first choice), they are opening up in a couple weeks for the summer season Thu-Sun, according to their web site/latest construction update. Here is a link:

http://www.sdcwa.org/infra/esp-sanvicentedamraise.phtml#ClosureSched

Renting it for the day is also an option, but costly, and not a good place to observe from unless you are on a boat.

Either way, let's make this happen. I know I can bring a crowd.

huh? Carlsbad blows El Cap and San V away as far as water conditions are concerned. I drive by there twice a day and almost always find myself wishing for those conditions.

The lakes are also only available for rent Mon-Wed and the "time blocks" on the weekend are first-come first-served without reservations.

I would be interest in a contest down here. I might try to go to the Arizonia contest, but money's tight right now. I know of at least a couple other girl, if not more that also would be interested.

i am sure something can be done for a lake rental..

where would the staging area be on the course?

good question.. that leaves canyon lake or elsinore or el cap (pretty good in this regards imo).. i dont know too many owners (me included) who would drop their boat in salt water...

i think az would be a better location.. lots more lakes (pleasent, bartlett, apache, sguarro etc.. !!!)

Ideally you want to have a contest site where you don't need to rely on boats (other then the pull boat).

El Cap would work if you can rent out the whole lake and have the spectator/ staging area at the point/ park entrance.

Fresh water is still my vote, but I understand the issues stated above. San Diego NEEDS to have an event here. Elsinore and Canyon have quite a few events, but we lag down here. Had a blast with the events that Wakesports put on for a couple years. Wish those were still happening. How about the ski course in Mission Bay? I know it's salt water, but is a great spectator area. Fairly inexpensive to use if I remember correctly. Only boats needed to be in the salt water are the tow boats. Plenty of parking also.

It's not a contest but The Boardrack and Walzer Boards will be having a demo day/ gathering at El Cap on May 5th.

My $.02, I think that gatherings and demo days are probably more in demand than contests at this stage.

Boards are still relatively expensive and independent third party information about board selection is still relatively scarce. There is no substitute for actually riding a board in the "do I buy it" decision-making process. Especially if there is a representative from the manufacturer or knowledgable folks available.

We've found that in the Ohio area, Ed Sullivan gets great interest from folks wanting to try out different boards, learn ballasting techniques and also get pointers on riding. The same is true in Florida with Ed Geary and his Moomba/Supra gathering.

Often times, these gatherings and demo days can form the basis for a future contest, even if informal.

Kudos to Sean and Sean and their respective companies The Boardrack and Walzer Boards. I would think that Alan and Centurion would like to be involved in such events. An opportinity for folks to ride behind an Enzo, and also the new Area 53 boards. My guess is that the Walker Project and Stripes Surf, who are in that general area, would enjoy being part of a demo day/gathering too.

Demo/Clinics are inexpensive and easier to run than competitions. The USA Wakeboard sanction fee is $25, free if you add a clinic to another USA Wakeboard competition. You need a trained safety coordinator, trained driver, and ďlevel 1Ē instructor. One person can be responsible for all three positions at a clinic. Officials have to be full USA Wakeboard members $35 to $65 ea. The safety and drivers clinics take a day, but are required for insurance purposes. The level I instructor certification is a correspondence course. My safety training cost about $65 the drivers clinic was free but I had to find an instructor. Iíve hooked Jeff up with USA Waterski/USA Wakeboard to help him find clinic instructors. Chris Walker with the NWL has offered to pay or defer these costs for Jeffís crew. Jeff, I know youíre busy, but some time I need to tell Chris how much support you will need.

Iíve added wakesurfing clinc/demos to other existing events for 2006 and 2007. A guest USA Wakeboard membership is needed for each person at the clinic to cover insurance. Jeff and the AWSA have offered to provide clinic prize boards. I plan to raffle (at no cost other than registration) the prize boards to clinic attendees. So for $5 and some gas money they have a shot at one of the best wakesurf boards available.

I think holding clinics early in the season and advertising competitions for late in the season at the clinic could be a good combination. Demonstrate the techniques, build skills, expose riders to a variety of boards, then offer an opportunity to compete once youíve figured it out.

Iíd love to surf behind an Enzo some time, I hope I can get one out to a gathering or competition this year. Iíd also like to surf behind some other boats too, thatís also part of the attraction of a gathering.

thanks Jeff,
Alan and Centurion will be involved in this event should it happen. what most posters don't understand is that a boat company has to be involved in making an event happen. Centurion has contacted me to see if it would be benificial to hold an event in So Cal (S.D.)

This event will not happen without Centurion backing us up. As far as other sponsors goes - U got to pay to play.

All of us in the industry know that no body is making $ at the moment - we are just pushing the sport with the love from our heart. I'll speak for myself - I just barely broke even last year. and with me with my new start-up (Area 53, or A53) it's back to the begining for me. More $ are coming out of my pocket than coming in.

we are doing this for the love of our sport. all of us ... Jeff Page, Walker, Mike at Calibrated (who is showing us that he is truly involved in the sport regardless of $), Jerry from Shred Stixx, Walzer, etc.

We have to stop all the hate toward each others companies. Let's unite and bring this mother out (wakesurfing). Wake surfing is not Oprah - talk show. Let's come together and form a new sport.

Kool, Alan
