I'm so close to landing this trick, and finally convinced my body to hold the handle to my lead hip to avoid going to revert. This morning though, as I was coming out of my rotation, my board actually 'hit' the rope. Does anyone else have this problem?

just because it is more comfortable doesn't mean that it's right.

Loren - When I first started landing backrolls I was starting to do them more and more mexican, because it seemed like it was easier to land this way. I can assure you that once you do one the right way it will feel way better than any mexican backroll. Once you go upside down, keep both hands on the handle and dig your elbows into your ribs. If you feel like you're gonna go to revert just slide the handle to your left (if you're regular, if you're goofy you would slide it to your right). Make sure you land with both hands on the handle.

With your arms down and in to your ribs, you'll also be able to spot your landing much sooner.

Thane,

Thanks, I'll give that a shot next time I'm out. When you do your 'normal' backrolls, I have heard conflicting advice.

Option 1. Tilt my head to the right, essentially placing my ear on my right shoulder.

Option 2. Turn my head to the left, essentially like I'm trying to initiate a 360.

I heard these from two different 'pros' who gave me a clinic, and am curious if it's just a different way to throw it, or if one way is 'wrong.'

Remember this, keep your chin up, and your spine in a straight line. Don't put your ear to your shoulder, that will get you to start putting your chin down, and turning your roll mexican. Don't turn it straight to the left because you will do a flat spin. Don't think about your head position all that much. What is much more important is driving the board straight up the wake.

Here's a pic of a pretty much text book back roll position. Notice spine in a straight line chin up, handle down and slightly forward, and both hands:
