I currently have a DVX100A and a FX1. I have been doing some side by side comparison to determine which one I should keep. For those who have either of these cams, which mode do you shoot wakeboarding in?
I prefer the 30P mode on both cams but getting smooth slow motion out of frames is more difficult than 60i. (24p is great for a filmic look but not for action) What do you use for smooth slow motion? 60i or 30p?
I plan to do a full review on both of these cams with some frame grabs and video, let me know what would be helpful to any of you who are interested in the differences.

Depends what you want I guess.

In general, 24p on consumer cams blows. If you want the filmic look, do it in post.

You are gonna have to decide which you want to give up, image quality or fluidity.

Televised sporting events are works or art and dont think you will be able to acheive that with just one camera. Most big time events now are shot in HD at 60p. I wish I could. They also have special cameras dedicated to slow-motion shots only.

I would say shoot at 60i, then deinterlace in post for your slo-mo stuff.

Also, cineframe on the sony cameras is horrid. I shoot an Sony Z1(the FX1's big brother). If you need any help, drop me a line. I'm getting pretty good with it.

and PLEASE....dont add a damaged film effect on your shots. everyone is sick of it. its a fad. good, clean, in focus video will never go out of style.

The video we previously did was shot in 30p on a DVX100 which I thought looked richer then 60i overall but I felt that we did lose some quality when it came to slow motion. Especially if the ratio wasn't an even increment like 50%, 25% etc. Ramped slo-mo was a disaster and I gave up trying to incorporate that due to time constraints. 60p with the variable framerate on the new HVX200 should be the ticket down the road.

If you can post the results of your tests I would love to see them. I am involved with another project as we speak which I decided I'd just shoot in 60i on the DVX since we'll be mixing footage in from some GL2's also. The Sony z1 was tempting but we don't don't have time to play around with a new format and get the thing done in the timetable we're looking at. I'm with toolfan on the film effects and most of the other ones people are throwing out there. Good angles, a LOT of good riding and good camera work is all you need for wB stuff.

My last film was all done in 60i ( www.wakefilms.com ), it was easy to achieve slo mo with. Interlaced is a pain to edit, especially HD. Damaged film effect?..never used and I donít like it either. Toolfan I have had good results with 30p on the sony, and some bad results. I have also had some difficulty with the sony with what appears to be over-contrasted images. I donít like how the sony display is difficult to match what external monitor will see. I made a fixture to mount both cams to a tripod and shoot riding. I shoot some this morning but we had an overcast day. I will try again tomorrow with good light and put together a bunch of screen grabs and video to determine the cam I am going to keep.
