Hey I would like to try this sometime and was just wondering if I could get some advice to start out. First off I have an '03 Calabria Cal-Air (DD). Is this an allright boat for wakesuring? I have a 600 pound fat sac also. What should I do with the weight to get a good wake? Also can I just use an old ski rope? You don't need any kind of special rope do you?

you can use the old ski rope but you might want to make/buy a wakesurf rope because they are easy to hang onto and pull yourself in closer, etc.
You should probably put the sac along the back or the side you are surfing on and get all the people in the boat in the back and go from there, not familiar with your specific boat but I think i've heard calabria's have a good surf wake

You will likely need more ballast. It is very important that you do NOT use the wrong rope since you will fall into it. The handle should be either knots or a narrow (about 6") handle. The rope length is best determined by moving back in the wake as far as you can surf, and then reaching as far forward as you reasonably can. That is usually the correct length. NEVER have the rope so long that when you are close to the boat that you coil it in your hands. For more information go to

Brad--I taught myself with stock ballast (Pro-V) and only a driver and flag holder. Ballast was full, and passenger in the back corner. Three arm spans of ski rope from the tower, and 10 feet of lake depth. Sounds like you're 600lbs better off than I was...I would start tomorrow! If you learn on a small wake, the BIG ones will be gravy!

Ideally, Larry's post is right though, especially about NOT coiling the rope. And the link is great!!
