I.m sure A.P. was refering to your spelling and grammer. I know I'm not quite sure what you said.

If you can do switch you might want to work on toeside 180's. Since you open toward the boat on the turn it makes them really easy to learn. Work on a good edge and pop and then once you're in the air the spin comes naturally.

Katie,

The spelling is secondary. The main problem with your posts is the grammar. This is understandable considering that you are "used to" AIM.

AIM is like a conversation. Ideas are broken up naturally by the different participants. What is the point of punctuating a one-line message?

A message board post, on the other hand, is more like a speech or an essay. You are expressing many thoughts, all in a row, and you have to somehow break them up so that people can process them.

Here's an edited version of your last post so you can hopefully see what I mean:

Yeah. OK, sorry. I don't really like to spell everything out. It's not like I purposely try to spell things wrong. I'm used to AIM lingo so I'm sorry if you don't understand what I'm saying. Also, I type very fast and tend to spell things wrong! But I mean, he didn't have to put it like THAT. The way he put it to me seemed offensive but whatever. It doesn't matter to me. I'll try that thanks!

When you don't use things like punctuation and capitalization, people have a hard time understanding what you write. It makes perfect sense to you because you wrote it. Everyone else, however, has to read and re-read your stream of words, trying to figure out where one idea ends and another one begins. This can be frustrating to people. This is bad, not only because some people will flame you for it, buy also because many people will ignore your posts and you will not get the responses you are looking for.

Had you taken an extra couple of seconds to at least break your thoughts into sentences, most people probably wounldn't have had any problem with your post.

Salmon put it in a very eloquent way of the message I was trying to put across. Although you did misspell "wouldn't". LOL.

Katie- The grammar used in your posts were not AIM language that I didn't understand. Your spelling is horrendous and your sentence structure is terrible. It is hard to understand what you are trying to get across because the posts are so unreadable.

I find it appalling that a 13 year old has such incomprehensible grammar. It actually saddens me because you obviously have no clue how to spell words correctly or write in a manner that deserves to be respected.

Wakeworld.com is a great website where the majority of the users are older mature people who can provide great insight and direction. The younger users who come on this board generally fit in and also give great advice. There is another wakeboarding website that I cannot stand to read. The users are immature and most of the threads (in my opinion) are meritless. You can tell it is a bunch of kids on the site goofing around. I don't want wakeworld to become like that. I enjoy reading the well written posts and a lot of the users who have been around for a while are well respected and their opinions are valued.

Salmon is right when he said you won't be taken serious if your grammar is so atrocious. You said you type fast and spell words wrong. I question that because a few of your words are nowhere close to being spelled right. But if you don't take the time to proof read your post to see if it was spelled right and the point easily read; why should I take the time to answer your question and give you the advice you so eagerly seek?

You are more than welcome to post on this website. I will give you some advice on how to be taken seriously. Proof read your posts. Type them out in MS Word and use the spell/grammar check. Then cut and paste it into the website. Do a search on the topic you seek. Most topics have been covered numerous times and you can save a lot of time and embarrassment by just doing some research.

Good luck to you and hit the books a little harder next school year.

"it to me seemed offencive but what ever it doestn matter to me ill try that thanks"

It offends me that anyone over the age of 6 would demonstrate such a poor use of the English language amongst strangers and not care how bad it makes them look. The occasional misspelled word is no big deal. Katie, apparently your circle of friends must not be the brightest bunch on the block if the way you write is the norm. AP did you a favor by pointing out how bad it makes you look. You should put as much effort into presenting yourself as an intelligent person as you do your wakeboarding.

You don't really say what tricks you can do on the board, so I would suggest heelside W2W jumps and followup with the toeside W2W. I find landing the toeside W2W easier by throwing in a 180 and landing switch.

I should add that the REASON using poor grammar and spelling makes you look bad, is that it shows a total lack of respect for the people whom you are addressing. Making them try to decipher the text is just rude. It's like cutting someone off in traffic, slamming the door in someone's face, or littering. These are situations where a trivial amount of effort can make other people's lives much easier. Not putting forth that effort is inconsiderate and people have every right to be offended.

ok, thanks for everyones input here, but realy i asked the question about tricks, not my grammar and spelling! I have a 3.83 gpa! MY best class is language... its summmer, and i usualy tend shut my brain off now. Im not trying to be rude or offencive here, trying making every desipher what im typeing.

"Not putting forth that effort is inconsiderate and people have every right to be offended."

I'm shure they are, but i aso obtain the right to be offended also , and personaly i think that its slightly inconsiderate of me to not put out as much effort as i can, but it seems to me that i should just stop using the boards, so again im sory for every one trying to desipher my gramarically chanlenged posts... so if you come across any more of mine just dont read them if my gramar is to difficult to read.

Katie - Don't let all these mean old men get you down :-) If you really want some abuse try posting something political in the non-wakeboarding forum

The original point was valid, Katie made the mistake of using an AIM writing style, but I think she got the point and there's no reason to keep on it at a personal level.

This might be a good topic to take to the non-wakeboarding forum if somebody wants to comment on AIM lingo in the younger generation's writing style or the education system in general.

3.83? Yeah, the education system is failing. My sister-in-law just graduated from college and she can't spell to save her life. It's the little things that make the difference in life. I understand you're feeling a bit blindsided here...but you have to understand most of us are parents and we're looking out for your best interests. BTW: I've always been better at english and grammar than wakeboarding so take it for what it's worth. I'm sure you could probably school me on the water...

actually 3.83 is veryy good thats all A+ and 1 b+! I think its not failing on my part, but jsut verry weak! Most of my friends are in summer school ryte now! for a junior high school kid like me, who is not takin a.p clases thats very good! the highest u can get without them is 4.0 so unless my teachers felt bad for me, it must mean i learned some thing!!!!

so thank you craig since u have sortof been stiking up for me since the begingin and also thaks SANGeRIA ! i appriciate it!

hey Craig... would it be easier to approach the 180 for the first time if i asked someone who has done it before... or mabey to see a trick vid.?

"If you really want some abuse try posting something political in the non-wakeboarding forum."

I would like to think that Craig's well-worded point is taken, and that any other posts here are in answer to Katie's original question. There was some constructive criticism (along with some rather unnecessary blunt remarks); let's leave it at that. Remember, if one is truly offended by misuse of the language, one always can always exercise one's freedom of choice by simply going on to the next post.

Tough crowd! I agree with moving on to wake to wake heelside or toeside 180 they are pretty much building blocks for everything. I have had alot of fun with surface spins and slides which I think would also be handy at this point also.

For all parents/people who are bothered by the educational system - Actually having recently come through the education system, I found that having my parents also constructively criticize/grade/proofread my homework (back when I was in high school) helped improve my spelling and grammar tremendously.

Katie, for me, I'm now old so I don't understand AIM, could you rewrite what stuff you can do so we can help get some tricks for you, and please never title a post with "ne one" again.
Old    airjunky123            07-06-2004, 9:31 AM Reply
Katie, I hate to burst your bubble, but in your last post, you obviously made an attempt to improve your written communication from your previous AIM dialect. I counted 27 errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. (I was bored.) If your school considers this type of composition to be above average, the standards of education have fallen to new lows. I could not have passed Fifth Grade if my writing skills were half as poor as the example you have given us. Granted, Fifth Grade was a LONG time ago for me, but we still, as a society, need to emphasize the importance of literacy in the English language. If you fail to see why it is so important, your age at this time will excuse you. My advice to you is to seek advanced placement classes in English, primarily composition and rhetoric, and challenge yourself to exceed the minimum standards of your school. Once you have accomplished that, try going wake to wake, and riding switch.
For those English majors out there, I'm prepared to be ripped apart.

This is hilarious. It's an f-ing message board people, let it go.

Jonathon giving serious advice to a 13 year old who could care less how she comes across grammaticaly in this message board. AP telliing her to "hit the books a little harder next year". Do you guys think she speaks/writes the same when she is being graded for it?? I seriously doubt it. What's more pathetic and laughable is that everyone still had to chime in after Salmon Tacos eloquent post. And not just little jabs either, you guys really spent some time on it.

Chinga la madre, if you don't have kids of your own or aren't in the business of teaching kids, then keep your opinions to yourselves and don't post, (unless you're asked to). If you really need to get it off your chest, send her a private message or email about it.

It's summer dammit, let this bright young girl spell/write how she pleases!!

Let me ask you this. Which response to your post would you prefer?

Ya shud ty rridn a butr slid. Just goes too tha wake nd slied tha bord out n tha centarnof da wake rid tha wake inda mid and go jus dotn fall.

Or.

A good beginner trick to try is called a butter slide. It is a trick that can impress the people in the boat and boost your confidence because you are basically riding the board sideways while going full speed. You want to cut out to your heelside and approach the wake toeside. Once you start to reach the top of the wake, you snap your rear foot forward and turn the back end 90 degrees so that your board is perpendicular to the boat. The middle of the board is riding on the top of the wake. Your fins should not catch because the tips of the board are not hitting the water. You can ride like this by just balancing the board on the tip of the wake. From here you can try to swing the board to a full 180 or drop your rear foot back and ride away from the wake. This is a good trick because it builds your riding confidence. It also allows you to learn the characteristics of your board and you can start to feel when the board will release and when the fins will grip.

Which type of response do you want? One is hard to read and looks as if little thought was put into it. The other is quite informative and contains better diction. But why would someone want to put time and effort into writing an informative response if the post you made is hard to read and appears you didn’t put much effort into it.

I understand some people take shortcuts with some internet lingo. But your grammar and spelling are horrible. Perhaps I am mistaken, so please decipher your post for me and tell me what point is an internet AIM shortcut and which one is spelled wrong. Again your grammar is terrible, without proper punctuation and word choice your point gets lost or requires multiple reads just to try and understand what point you are trying to convey. Is that what you want your readers to do? Be confused and have to read and reread your posts just to be able to understand you? If you do then you probably won’t get the responses you desire. I realize I do not own this website and I am nothing but a grateful user. But I enjoy this site because of the intellectual stimulation I get from it. Having debates with people in some threads and receiving great insight from professionals and other users provides a great medium for us to exchange ideas and learn from each other. I don’t want to see it degrade into a forum where the grammar becomes incomprehensible because of immature people viewing it as their own private playground to be idiots. Let’s keep this website informative and strong by posting well thought out posts and create an environment for users to receive accurate information. No one knows you on this board. You will be judged by your threads. If your threads are grossly misspelled and the grammar atrocious, people will think you are an idiot and attack you or not respond to your post. Either way you are not getting what you desire.

I don’t doubt you have a 3.78 GPA but I question the quality of your work. What kind of classes are you taking? What exactly is “Language”? Perhaps you have a learning problem. If you do I sincerely apologize. But based on the posts you have made I have to question your view on your own academic performance if you think you don’t have a problem. Maybe the teachers are being generous. If you are getting such a high GPA, how come you aren't taking AP classes? Will those be too challenging for you? If they are why would they be?

Just start by typing a "period" when you finish a complete thought. That alone would make your posts somewhat comprehensible. I understand using "AIM language" to speed things up, but adding a period here and there is very easy and quick.

In case your wondering... Dave has an automatic spellcheck built into the website. When you make posts in the preview mode, it highlights all the misspelled words you made. Just in case you didn't know, the highlights are bad and not Dave telling you that you are making great points by highlighting them.

It's actually "dammit", "damnation" or the shorter "damn". If you correct someone for spelling, try to do a little research first.

Follow Craig's advice about going with those links. Most of the information is already on this website, so put some time in on either the search page or the articles archive. I don't think you are going to get much more advice here besides people making comments about spelling. Try starting another post in the trick tips section. Most people there are more accepting of spelling mistakes.

Woo hoo!! One more post to go till I'm a super dork!!

3.83. That proves grades dont mean am 14 and I have a 2.5 and I KNOW I have better grammar than you (Only mistakes in here will be due to keyboard not working right, the punctuation buttons are mixed up). Anyways, I assume you do no tricks. I would try some surface tricks such as lipslides and 180s. Then I would move on to TS 180s and grabs. If you cant already try going W2W both HS and TS. I hope that helps.

I ride at New Melones as well. How long ago did you quit going there. I saw someone who fits your profile description riding a few weekends ago, might have been you. Anyways, good luck!

As for the educational system failing, you guys are all wrong. Kids are learning way more in high school than any of you 45 year-olds ever did in high school. Between AP and calculus, the academic requirments have risen ten-fold from where they used to be. You can't bash the system by any means. Just because she does have a 3.82 or whatever, doesn't mean that the system's failing and that she's not as smart as she should be with a 3.8. She's just used to writing a normal way online. It's not YOUR discussion board to say who can write one way over another. Like they've said before, if it bothers you, don't read it. There are plenty of posts to read on this board after you skip over one you can't understand. Whats the point in bashing a pretty smart 13 year-old who's used to writing a certain way?

haha, like many people have stated before katie, I would also recommend starting with grabs and 180s wake-to-wake.

peace,
chris

Chris, The point is precisely the way she writes. Somebody needs to make her aware that the way she presents herself among others is important. I have a 13 yr old daughter that has a lower grade point average and does not write nearly as poorly. If she is getting an A in "Language Arts" with submissions that reflect the writing style we see here, then the educational system is failing her and has sunk to some pretty bad standards in her community. However I agree that there is no need to continue to berate her over her grammer and spelling.
Old    powerchordkid87            07-06-2004, 7:32 PM Reply
As a highschool student myself, I agree that the educational system is not failing. It's the students, if anyone, who are failing. Sure she could be getting an "A" in Language Arts, but many students don't apply what they learn outside of their classwork. And once the subject is learned it is quickly dismissed and forgotten after the tests have been taken. I know lots of fellow students like that. The student that's #1 in my class and years ahead of everyone else in mathematics is also the most "foolish" person I have ever seen outside of school. I'm not sure why people act this way. My best guess is that Katie, and students like her, are just looking for attention.

Sorry to participate in the further highjacking of this thread, Katie, but...

Chris,

SOME high school students are learning much more than they did in the past. The trend, however, is that many many more are learning less. You can't really blame the educational system though. You can't blame the governement. How much money does it really take to buy some books and paper? You also can't blame the teachers.

I think the problem has MUCH more to do with parents and society. Dual incomes are practically a necessity. Parents are tired and apathetic. Society tells kids that they're entitled to everything and that nothing is their fault. Television makes them think that they can live large without really trying.

Throw all these brats into a classroom and teachers have to be babysitters, police, and counselors first; teachers second. I feel really sorry for teachers.

Anyway, many of the kids I see on these message boards are perfect examples of this. They're lazy. They have no respect for the community. They have no respect for themselves aside from what their parents can buy them. They're just spoiled little brats.

Now, not all the kids here are like that, thank god. I just think that the exceptions (the "bad apples") of 30, 20, or even 10 years ago, are quickly becoming the norm. I hope someone can figure out how to turn it around.

More Hijacking

Kids and parents today do have different influences than they did a generation ago. That has always been the case and is probably more so in the past few decades than any other. As members of the last generation it is easy to point out all of the negatives. Society does tell people that they are entitled to have everything, TV is full of programming that I would consider to be unhealthy crap, people are learning that spending time on education just gets in the way of making money. As a kid your 'value' is determined by your social status, being accepted by the cool kids. As an adult your value in business is determined by the bottom line you create, Salesmen are producers and Engineers are just overhead, your value in society is judged by the size of your house. Why be more educated if it doesn't make you more valued? One part of a solution would be to turn the country back into a leader in science and technology where an education is valued and rewarded.

I don't have such a negative view overall though. Maybe because I have seen my own family move up considerably in our level of education over the past couple of generations. My older brother's kids are all very well educated and doing extremely well. I have no doubt that this is due to the fact that they have such committed parents who give the extra effort that thier children deserve.

The educational system has resources that were not even imagined 30 years ago and still has committed teachers. It also has problems with funding and an attitude of just making the kids feel good and getting them through.

None of this matters much if the parents don't accept the fact that ultimatly their children are thier responsibility and if they fail thier children at home they are unlikely to be saved by the system.

The key is being able to "code switch". Katie claims she is highly intelligent and is using AIM shortcuts to communicate. I don't think this is true but lets take that at face value. AIM language may be appropriate in certain situations. In communicating with her friends or on some other website this can be easily accepted. However, wakeworld is clearly not the website that tolerates this type of language. The most informative threads on this website are well written. If that is the case in this medium then Katie must change her writing style to appease the audience she is writing for. Her request was for advice on a new trick, but it quickly changed to a different topic due to her writing style. Right or wrong it happened. If Katie is as bright as she wants us to believe she should have immediately changed her writing style to match the ones of her audience. But she didn't do that. The grammar and misspelled words got worse an worse on each post she made. Clearly she is not playing to her audience or she doesn't have the ability to write well.

I am a police officer and I have to constantly "code switch". If I'm talking to a group of gangsters, I changed my choice of words and my demeanor. If I'm talking to drug dealers, my diction changes again and body language changes to make them feel more comfortable around me. And of course if I talk to a concerned citizen I again have to change my language and body style. You cannot talk to a hardcore gangster the same way you would talk to an elderly woman who is concerned about her neighbors being too loud. There is nothing wrong with taking the AIM shortcuts that Katie claims she uses. However she needs to be able to switch back to proper English when it is called for. But her repeated posts either show her refusal to write proper English or she really has a hard time trying to write properly.

To compound the problem she claims she is an A+ student. Many of us find that hard to believe and start to question the quality of her education. To those who responded in this post and said to leave her alone she is a "bright" girl. I'm curious how do you come to the conclusion she is "bright". When on a discussion board (and as lame as it may be to argue) the only way to portray yourself as having any useful knowledge is the way you write. Which one of Katie's posts led you to believe she is a smart girl?

I agree it is very destructive to pile on Katie and try to make her feel bad. I hope she takes away from this thread that she needs to know her audience and try to appease them. Take your time to put effort into your thoughts to portray yourself as an intelligent person. Impress people by writing eloquent posts and make them amazed that a 13 year old can write like that. If you do have problems writing, then take the time to practice and read, read, read. I finally was able to start writing better by just reading. If you are too shell shocked to make any more posts then do a search on the discussion boards. I can assure you that basically every question you can think of has been asked and answered many times.

I do thank you for bringing this topic up. It has lead to a very entertaining thread.

Bigdad - Well-put.

I do hope she comes away from this with an understanding of your point, and does not take too harshly the members who just want to bash her without trying to help.

Katie - I'm sorry to say but the sooner you let it go the sooner it will go away. Every time you say something it sends this thread right back to the top, and the more people see it, and the people make comments.

Katie,

I'd like to commend you on your use of sentences, punctuation, capitalization, and even paragraphs. Your latest post was much MUCH easier to read. Your spelling and general knowledge of English grammar could still use some work but that's fine. Being only 13, you have years to iron that out. For now, I think the grammar and spelling shown in your last post will allow you to avoid spontaneous criticism from all but the most hardcore and bitter flamers.

I agree. Thanks for the punctuation. Personally, the way my mind learns, I find it easier to spell a word correctly the more times I read it correctly. The next time I see that word misspelled, I recognize that it's wrong. (I may not know how to spell it right....., but I can see that it is misspelled)
Someone mentioned the spell check function on this board. I didn't know it had one until then. I think it could be helpful.
To activate it, go to "edit profile," click on "preferences," select "spell check my posts." Also, make sure "skip the preview screen" is UNCHECKED.
This is a really handy tool. A preview of your post pops up with any misspelled words highlighted in yellow. When you get it right, the yellow disappears. When satisfied, click "post this message." Give it a try.

Possibly the end of an era, Swass.
Don't worry though, you're legacy still remains.

HAHAHAHAH....

I'm glad I stuck around. Those last few posts had me on the floor! The classic "Swass gets a compliment and then corrects the compliment's grammar." Freakin' hilarious....

I think I have a solution to everyone's issues.

Katie, from now on what I want you to try is...typing everything in Microsoft Word®. That way all spelling errors & grammatical flaws will be indicated & thus corected. Then just cut & paste it to the message board here and everyone will be happy. It's quick and easy and all these appalled people will find someone else's kid to be horrified by(look at your own kids before you lecture someone else's, I'm sure their internet jargon is pretty poor). Finally Katie, don't do drugs.

Stephen, you are just going to make things worse. That is why our schools suck today. Computers do everything for us.

Why do so many people care about how a 13 year old girl types/spells. This a wakeboarding site and she is exactly that, a wakeboarder. Those of you that find it fun to criticize a 13 year old's grammar seriously need to find something better to do. All you are going to do is scare this poor girl off to the point where she will never want to say anything on here again. You guys are unbelievable. Get a life and let her be. She's probably a better rider than half of you or at least will be one day.

Hi Katie! I am glad to hear about your progress. IMO what you should work towards is being consistent - first with one wake jumps, then wake to wake heelside and toeside, then one wake 180s (use the handle to control your spin) and then wake to wake 180s. And keep in mind, that after you can land these tricks riding in your regular stance you should try to do them all switch - with your other foot forward. Throw grabs in when you feel confident. You mention that you find it easier to do your tricks toeside - I think everyone's different and if it is working for you keep it up.

From one girl to another you might enjoy these sites www.girlslearntoride.com www.wakechicks.com
Good luck!
