For some reason, I cannot get over the nose on these boats. To me, IMO, it looks deformed or smashed in. I know it is just me, but that is the way I see it.

I really like the simple, clean graphics.

So much better than a wrap that wants to be an overpriced ugly tshirt.

They look really plain to me, like an entry level boat (which they aren't).

BORING

The orange looks awesome.

It must be different putting one of those on the trailer compared to other boats with where the box eye is.
Old     (dadthedriver)      Join Date: Jul 2004       01-19-2009, 1:41 PM Reply
Timmy- So if you put fancy wraps or tribal stickers all over a boat it then becomes an expensive boat?

There are still many wrap options if people want that.

Shaun- surprisingly the boat is very easy to trailer once you get familiar with it.

Pootie- I'm with ya, the nose of that boat looks F'ED up!

I really like the simplicity of those boats. Too bad they don't make a 21 footer! Ya, I know, same thing I said last year and the year before.
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       01-19-2009, 2:35 PM Reply
The nose looks perfectly fine to me. It allows for a wider bow. Its better than a cosmetic only silly pickle fork.
Old     (timmyb)      Join Date: Apr 2007       01-19-2009, 2:48 PM Reply
All I am saying is that with the weird nose and the plain jane gelcoat and graphics it looks like an entry level boat. FWIW higher end boats normally spend some money developing nice looking graphics and gelcoat patterns. Line that Epic up next to a Malibu, Nautique or MC and grab a person that doesn't know anything about wake boats and have them pick which one looks like it's worth the $$ based on the exterior alone.

One thing that is strange to me is that Epic wanted these built in Merced by Fineline (Centurion) so they could take advantage of their gelcoat staff.

I'm not sure if something is in place in the contract that certain technologies cannot be shared just yet but I was expecting more.

From the info I have, Centurion and Epic will be sharing some of their technologies soon.

Centurion gets hull material construction technology
Epic gets new gelcoat schemes.

That gray is stealth!

They may be plain, even "simple", but at least they aren't overly trendy, or worse yet, a replica of some Ed Hardy D'Bag T Shirt like some of these wraps are getting to be. I'd take the simple, clean lines over a scheme that has a good chance of trending out within the next 3 years...ala Tribal Barbed Wire graphics.

is it the light or does the gray one not have the blunt nose?

It's the light. I can see it.

I like the nose I think I may chop of the one on my 90 sport nautique and the built on ski platform so I can get it in my garage. I wonder how hard that would be?

I think they look nice. The blue with the white tower is a nice color combo. The nose is a little strange, but so is an MB. I like them both. How much does one of these go for?
Old     (greatdane)      Join Date: Feb 2001       01-19-2009, 7:58 PM Reply
I find it amazing that anyone cares about the minor blunt nose especially when it makes a lot of sense --> it allows the bow to be wider and it cuts 5 or 6 useless inches off the length.
Old     (stephan)      Join Date: Nov 2002       01-19-2009, 11:53 PM Reply
I could care less if a non-rider would choose the looks of a Malibu over an Epic. The people I want to appreciate my boat are riders. Riders that have had a chance to session an Epic know that it is the real deal and throws a monster wake.

I think the simple colors help for re-sale. Some people can really EFF up a boat with crazy color combos.

I prefer to spend my money on functional items rather than flashy "look at me" garbage. Kudos to Epic for sticking to their "for the core rider" philosophy.

Does the dual rudder really make a difference?

Those look clean. I dig the direction Epic has taken............
Old     (talltigeguy)      Join Date: Sep 2003       01-20-2009, 11:58 AM Reply
I would think the dual rudder would make a difference when you have 4k of ballast in them. That is how they were designed, so yes, it does make a difference.
Old     (dadthedriver)      Join Date: Jul 2004       01-20-2009, 12:30 PM Reply
The dual rudders make the boat handle very well. Especially loaded down. I was on the boat at Lake Mead when they did a dealer demo. The boat had about 3/4 ballast in it and the dealer went flat out and then hooked it left and the boat responded just like a direct drive ski boat. It hooked and turned so fast that it threw everyone from one side to the other. Pretty impressive for a 23 foot boat with 3000 lbs of ballast in it at the time. It is also very nice to be able to actually steer the boat when it backs up.

As far as bling. I think Epic has all the bling that is needed. Just to let you know we have both a Malibu VLX and an Epic and when ever we go to the warehouse to get a boat I always ask which one they want to ride today and every time they look at me like I am stupid and they all say the Epic of course.
Old     (lcky275)      Join Date: Jul 2002       01-20-2009, 12:42 PM Reply
Quick question: On the Wakeboarding Mag tests, it lists the boat's top speed as 36MPH, is that due to the Dropzone hull? If so, how is it on fuel economy? GPH while boarding?
Old     (dadthedriver)      Join Date: Jul 2004       01-20-2009, 12:49 PM Reply
We have found that when we spend the whole day riding on the private lake it does not matter which boat we use, the VLX or the Epic, it takes about 20 to 25 gallons to top it back off after the day.
If the boat is empty and you mess with the trim tab you can get over 40 in ours but who needs that. 22 to 25 is all we need.
Old     (hatepain)      Join Date: Aug 2006       01-20-2009, 1:26 PM Reply
^^^^What is it if you're not on the "private lake"?

The only problem I have with Epics is the price tag. I'm sure the function extremely well but if they're gonna charge $72+ I'm gonna need some level of finer appointments.
Old     (dadthedriver)      Join Date: Jul 2004       01-20-2009, 1:40 PM Reply
If we go to the public lake we use more in either boat. The usage for us with a fully loaded Malibu (3000lbs) or a fully loaded Epic (4000lbs) is almost the same. The Malibu works harder and burns fuel at about the same rate as the Epic that runs at lower RPMS and works less. Same prop on both boats. 14.25 acme. Malibu has the Monsoon and the Epic has the 8.1 Horizon.

Wow that much? Whatever happened to the $50k price tag that they advertised so much?

does epic still have the resin infused hull thingy that makes it really light or are they using a more tranditional fiberglass process?

Love the boat but mid 70's is out of the range i'm willing to spend. I was looking forward to a smaller version that i thought was coming out (maybe 21ft). Haven't heard much about it lately.
Old     (dadthedriver)      Join Date: Jul 2004       01-20-2009, 6:29 PM Reply
Yes Epic is still Resin Infused Hull. 3200 lbs for a 23'ft boat with a 8.1 liter. It pulls real nice.

There are several 08 Epic promo/dealer boats listed on the want ads for 50 and less.
Old     (tuneman)      Join Date: Mar 2002       01-21-2009, 8:30 AM Reply
Out of curiosity, what do the Epic gel coats look like in person? I'm assuming that resin infusing will be used by all manufacturers some day, but I've heard that it's difficult to get a nice finish.

I really dig the grey

I just don't like the way their trailers are built..I don't think I'd wanna drive 200 miles with that thing.

Tuneman- The gel coats are amazing. One thing Epic is very proud of is how smooth the gel coat is.

Pete C- not sure what you mean by the way the trailers are built but there has been many an Epic pulled for a lot of miles on those trailers with no problems.
Old     (motogod77)      Join Date: Aug 2008       01-22-2009, 10:23 AM Reply
Well the gel coat is the same as many other boat manufactorers, since Epics have been built in CA for over a year by Fineline Ind.

That Dark Blue with the White Tower looks clean to me. I've liked the boats since day one and if I could afford a new boat I would definitely look into them. I like the simple look without too much going on.

David- The Blue is my favorite as well. I love the clean look of the boat as well. Not a lot of crazy graphics that go out of style in a few years.

I'm sure these boats are the s#%t for all you hardcore riders but they look old and plain. There was a thread up awhile ago with a 1971 Century Coronado, these two boats look similar IMO. No disrespect intended to all you Epic owners but why not have their looks match their performance.

epic does not advertise that there boat is for everyone. they market there boat for the serious wakeboarder. its a tow rig plain and simple
Old     (liquidmx)      Join Date: Jun 2005       01-22-2009, 3:14 PM Reply
Too plain? If I where buying one I would take the blue w/ white tower, ditch the stripe and run a larger epic decal and call it a day!

The same can be said with an X-Star. However the Xstar is anything but plain and simple.

Sick. Even though the original white was awesome I like the blue too, and the black one just peeking out at the back in the first pic. If I was to go to the trouble of importing a new boat from the states (And I could afford it) this would be it.

If I am gonna pay that much money, you better give me some graphics and make it noticeable. I want people to say "damn thats a nice boat". Those are just too boring lookin.
Old     (hamkj)      Join Date: Apr 2002       01-22-2009, 11:40 PM Reply
Hey come on!!!! It has DUAL rudders... That is a must on every boat!!! Who cares about the graphics... or lack of... but knowing I can power turn when the boat is fully loaded... is a selling point in itself!

I am surprised not every manufacturer has gone to the dual rudder system...

Damn, those sweet boats are too plain!

They need to add a STARSKY stripe and a WOODEN spoiler.

Is this wakeboarding, or a popularity contest?

Just make it produce a great wake, be efficient, and yes, handling a tight turn when fully loaded is important to me. The boat should be able to hold speed for a tight doubleup, to turn for a comp run, or to quickly change directions when a wakesurfer comes around the corner.
Old     (liquidmx)      Join Date: Jun 2005       01-23-2009, 9:05 AM Reply
Agreed J-rod! I have yet to meet a serious wakeboarder that would say "so what about 4k in ballast and killer handling...I want some cool graphics and chrome."

Very classy looking boats, 2k stock ballast ain't too shabby either :-)

you all know i'm a big fan of epic boats (the boat), but that wrap...damn! what a way to eff up an otherwise sick boat! does it come w/ a rottweiler, too, to reaffirm the boat owner's masculinity?
Old     (hehateme)      Join Date: Sep 2008       01-23-2009, 9:10 PM Reply
Its just like buying a car, the thing better be fast, perform, comfortable, safe, and have a of ammenities. MOST IMPORTANTLY, SOB better look good!!! Especially if its gonna cost 60k plus!!! Just because it comes with a of ballast doesnt make it any better than other boats, you can add a of ballast to many other boats too. Seriously, who buys a luxury item to look plain ass jane?????
Old     (hco)      Join Date: Jun 2006       01-24-2009, 10:24 AM Reply
Martin, but if you add alot of ballast to other boats they don't handle as well, they struggle to get out of the hole, and it takes almost an hour to fill up another 2k in ballast unless you have done a custom ballast install. Also, you guys keep forgetting that it doesn't have to look like plain ass jane, you do have options as a buyer, those were just the basic gel coat schemes.

I know epic has 4k, but i was referencing how other boats you need to add an additional 2k on top of the stock ballast

Have you ever seen an Epic in person, they look awesome... not the most flashy boat ever but they are HUGE! I have never seen another boat that looks more impressive sitting in the water/trailer except maybe an X-55.

It is an awesome looking boat and makes other boats just look small and pathetic.

Reminds me of the old MB Sports "pig nose" boat down in SoCal.
Simple lines & graphics. I'm sure wraps can be done, just like any boat. And like stereo equipment, I'd be willing to bet that having a wrap done aftermarket is a lot less expensive than OEM..... and probably more unique.

Need to see some pics of the transom!

Wow these new colors look clean. Simple is really nice sometimes.

Epic pulled one of our contests last year and I was highly impressed. It handled better than our 08 X-Star (by far) on our tiny private lake and the wake was outright awesome. Reminded me of a 2004 SuperAir but bigger. For a Core boat, it hits all of the demands for the guys that know what they want and have owned other boats they can compare it to. We actually gave the Advanced and Outlaw riders a choice on what boat they wanted to ride, the X-Star or the Epic. Everyone that had previously rode the Epic made that decision pretty quick. There are a few pictures on the photo gallery links in our website. It was contest #1 last year.

those boats are unique and have character ,add the wake kicks serious butt stock and it rides rough watern and drives so smooth,im surprised they dont sell more boats.

i wish they had a 21ft boat with a cheaper price tag with the same results as the 23 and id take a hard serious look at owning one..

as of now they are priced like other proven boats in the market but they are new ,have no track record and dont leave people many options because if you had to choose between a proven boat like a Malibu, supra,mc,or cc and prices are close you go with one of the proven pnes.

IMO if they dropped the price to below the market of other big four manfs... and raised the standard warranty to say 6 yrs bumper to bumper to gain consumer confindence, then maybe they would make a dent in this market.

car manufacturers like Kia and Hyundai are doing something similar when they started and they are doing well in the car market.
