Old tire weights. You can sometimes pick them up for free at a tire shop. Bullets. Go to a shooting range (preferably during a time when no one is shooting) and pick up the lead from the targets. Only disadvantage is that it is very "dirty" lead, full of brass, paper, plastic, etc.

Is that purchased AND shipped for $1/lb? That's outstanding if so. What size bags are they and what are the rough dimensions of say a 25 or 50# bag?

I have about ten 50-75lb lead bricks. Some I bought from the scrap yard in Hayward for $0.50/lb. and some I made by melting down old tire weights. I am not currently using them and I would consider letting a few of them go. I do need to buy a couple of those bags that I can use to balance out the wake. Shipping lead gets expensive quickly.

I used old V6 valve covers to melt my lead into but that is more thean 1" they measure about 3" but you wouldn't have to fill them all the way.

rob--- throw a few buckets in the rear of your truck and ride through town -- i picked up over 800 #'s of lead just this afternoon from tire shops -- didn't cost a dime -- just drove in and asked -- only made 3 stops.....

I've been looking, but most of the shops around here sell their lead already. I did find a scrap place that sells it for $.30 a lb not bad. On another note, how hard is it to melt down the lead. Any instructions?

How caustic is the lead when melting down. I would think the fumes given off from melting would/could be dangerous. Anyone have any real life experience?

Robandrus, 30cents/pound is pretty cheap, cheaper than I paid. Lead scraps are easy to find in some areas not in other areas. I went to no fewer than 10 gas stations and tire shops to scrounge up about 300lbs worth. You have to compete with the local weight smelting fishermen for the stuff. Most of the shops I visited in Nor. Cal. already had prior arrangements. I couldn't even get much from my neighbor that owns a Big O tire store??? TR, My opinion is that most of the fumes are from the junk burning off the lead. It's a pain in any case but it's pretty easy to do with an old Coleman white gas campstove and a cast iron skillet. Taper's trays make perfect molds (thanks Rod). I spent over five years working in oil refineries so I am probably going to die anyway??? I finally quit melting the stuff because it was pi$$ing off my wife.

If you're on the East coast--there is s ferrier (who also wakeboards) in North Carolina that is cranking out lead plates that look exactly like the old lead heads. (Approx: 8x12x1) Think they go for $50 per 50lb plate--then again there is always the shipping. (Everyone I know that has gotten them has been local.) Shoot me an email if you are interested in his contact information.

Mikeski -- can you explain the Taper's trays --waht are their size and where are they found? In my experience w/ melting lead, just as Mikeshi said, most of the fumes are from the dirt, trash etc, from the weights. This is not dangerous at all. However the lead fumes are, but the fumes aren't too bad til (in the event) the lead starts to boil.. Try not to let it get that hot... .30 does sound a little high per lb. i have had a few shops here local that are asking .10 per lb, i just move on to the next. I'm not going to pay until I have to. However I do realize the difference in "demand" or "want" east vs west coast....
