Why don't they all just tattoo some numbers on their stomachs and below their names and they can start their own little wakeboarding basketball team?

I don't understand. There are a lot of pro riders with tattoos of their names across their backs, and fronts. Why are some cool and some not? Bonifay's is written in boxcars if I remember correctly. I can't bag on anyone's tattoo--I don't have any. Not because I don't think they are cool, but because I lack the commitment.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Has more overt meaning that the random armband or butterfly. If we are judging, Sheckler's looks better....more uniform. Agree, people pitching the hate, just to hate. Wasting emotion on those we have no real or substantial relationship with, is odd at best.

I don't think it's a bad tattoo, I think the placement could have been better just because it's not symmetrical. Maybe on the inside of his arm or on his ribs.

It is sort of tradition that one's first tattoo be flawed in some way, so if he chose to go with a big back piece for his first, so be it. Why do people care? Out of all the people who have busted on Soven, I assert that every one of you is jealous in some way. I challenge you to prove to me that you are not.

I am probably wrong, but doesn't randy harris have some big tattoo of his name? What about byerly? For some reason I think I have seen something like that, but don't have the time or willpower to go find pictures. As I said, I am probably wrong, but it would be funny if it is true, because I don't think people would give them a hard time about it.

dc, If you truly feel that way about regular wakeboarders, then what are you doing on this forum? There is a separate one for you dedicated only for the esoteric, although admittedly difficult, niche of wakeskating. If your statement is true, then your only two possible reasons for coming over here would be 1) you are actually interested and desire to participate in the group that you claim not to respect, or 2) your only intention is to criticize and troll for conflict, which means you are a mean-spirited person. Which is it?

Soven's on top right now so tons of people will take pot shots. Those are the idiots of the world. I think there's real truth to Ryan's comment about jealousy, no matter how much some of you may deny it. I doubt most people on here are jealous of Soven because we wish we were Soven. But how many of you could say you wouldn't enjoy having the skills he has? (I'm talking about his ability and not his trick list) Whether that would mean you'd end up being a contest or freerider doesn't matter. So because "YOU" are so sure you'd act differently than Soven, if you had the same blessings he does, do you really think that entitles you to criticize him? Ragging on people is just lame. There's a huge difference between discussing someone to avoid similar mistakes or in an effort to understand them than there is from passing judgement.

I like soven's better than shecklers. I think if you are going to get a tatoo, the best is the last name one. bonifay's is alrite. I just plain don't like sheckler, he is really whiny. I didn't think there would be so much of an argument on this thread. Soven Got a tatoo. It's Gay. No It's Not Yes It Is No It's Not. ????

Who cares who has tats, what they look like and why we care so much about what other people have? Especially professional athletes. I've got one, I'm getting another. Some of you are gonna tell me not to and some are gonna say, sweet tat Jamie, looks good. But I guarantee you I won't get more than 10 posts on it. Just because I'm not a professional wakeboarder and Soven is why do we have to critisize his tat and not mine? or anyone else's for that matter. Just me 2 cents. He is good and yes I am one of those people who is WAY jealous of him. He's livin my dream and I'm stuck in college

soven's tat is most likely not crooked. If you look, his right shoulder is much higher then his left. Same with his ears. Probably a goofy camera angle. If he had it put on his lower back, now that would have been gay.

Jamie, good post, I agree with you, but also don't forget that for most people your age on this planet, having the opportunity to attend college for them would be "living the dream." Don't forget to watch Tattoo Wars tonight! http://www.wakeworld.com/MB/Discus/messages/4387/517936.html?1194490844 Oh, and BTW, I must give due credit: I stole use of the word "esoteric," from WakeWorld's Christopher Stack, man, I love that word! People who make fun of tattoos are lames. Who are you? Post a pic of "clean" skin, so we can comment on you. Otherwise, do your parents some damn justice and recall when they slapped you and told you to keep your mouth shut, unless you have something nice to say. Like we care what "you" think about X tattoo.....

IMO giving someone negiateve comments on their Tattoo is worthless. Its not like saying somthing bad about it is EVER gonna make some one feel good. And its unlikely that they can do any thing about it. Its great that people offer their opinions good and bad but on some thing's its better to offer no opinion then a bad one.

I am sure he is proud of it. for those of you bagging on it, take a look in the mirror. you must be real proud of yourself.

I personally don't have anything against tattoo's, but I do think young people have a tendency to go way overboard with their ink these days. You can express yourself with a tat just as well with something a fraction of that size. It's one he!! of a commitment to have something the size of Soven's put on your body. He's twenty years old, so that gives him approximately another sixty years to live with that tattoo. Girls are already starting to see the backlash for the lower back style tattoo's. I'm quessing these over the top tats on guys are going to fall victim to the same fashion swings. Again... I don't have anything against tats. Just something for folks to think about before turning their entire backside into a lifetime billboard. My personal projection... The monster tat craze is going to fade, and we will see laser tattoo removal explode in the next ten years or so.

Cliff - I dont think we will see tattoo removal take off until it becomes less painful. I was told that it is at least twice as painful as an actual tattoo. and I could not agree more with you. although I do have a lot of ink, mostly medium to larger pieces, I do think most kids these days dont think before going in. I see so many kids still in HS getting sleeved now. what are they going to do about a job after college??? yikes. at least sovens is hideable.

Mr. Soven needs a publicist or an image consultant or something. For such a talented rider he kind of takes a beating on forums and other outlets where people get *chatty*. He's kind of the modern-day Brannon Mark Johnson. Talented - driven - consistent. And yet somehow missing that x-factor.

These Riders do what they love to do and are able to do what they want when they want to their bodies ... they found the career that they want to do and im sure they will continue pursuing it as much as they can and in a business sense as well so who cares if they are tatted up !!! It doesnt change a person because they have tattoos... it doesnt make them work harder or less ... thats just the person in general if they have a problem ... they didnt get where they are now without some kind of business sense so they will go far in whatever they end up doing . with tattoos or not !

Ashley point taken. Randy Harris is kind of an odd example but lets go with it. He is of the most important riders in the history of the sport. Let's assume that even if he was injured in such a way to end his wakeboarding career as we know it (freeride/clinic/video), he'd still have a lucrative career in the sport - in some capacity because he's Randy Harris. Not unlike how CC Roberts has remained relevant and doing lots for the industry. Great story there, and CC Roberts remains a great ambassador to the sport and to handicapped folks who are interested in it. But lets say Mr. Harris decided he wanted to get into software sales or something nerdy and white collar like that with the skeletor hand tattoo. He'd have trouble getting hired and sent out on client visits. That is such a stretch that it is kind of a ridiculous thing to even discuss. But that reminds me of something that is sort of relevant here. It is the hundreds/thousands of guys that are out there getting "full sleeve" tattoos these days. Full sleeve tattoos are just about the worst thing I am seeing in terms of tattoo trends lately. These normal Joe Schmoe's spending thousands of dollars to get full sleeves seem to be everywhere lately. I'm talking about the ones that go all the way down to the base of the wrist, on purpose. Those people are certainly not coworkers of mine or anyone I cross in the business world. They're driving pickle trucks and operating the tiltawhirl at the carnival. Despite how smart they may be, neck, face and sleeve tattoos are a good way to reduce your chances of getting taken very seriously. I guess it is a form of discrimination - but it also speaks to the person's decision making abilities and - sensibilities. By the way I have tattoos so I am not trying to be a hypocrite. Also - tattoo removal is going to be (if it isn't already) a HUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEE growth industry in the next 10 years. Investment opportunities to the max. I watch MAIMI INK and LA INK a lot. I think some folks get cool tats while others get lame tats. I also think some of the tat art is amazing and some of it is just so-so. So, I guess its just like everything else... 1) beauty is in the eye of the beholder and 2) opinions are like aholes, everyone has one.

Erik you might be right in some cases, but imagine this scenario: I am a professional, established, work for the government and make decent money, my position is protected. I will never be fired unless I really screw up something, which I won't because it's within my control. I drive a 2001 Dodge Stratus that was my grandmothers, point being I have no car payment. I wear a long sleeved shirt and tie every day. I don't give a rat's arse about driving a BMW or Escalade, great cars, but I just don't care about it. If I feel like dropping a couple/few grand on a sleeve, why shouldn't I? Other people choose to have a $500 monthly car payment, fine if it makes them happy. Why shouldn't I spend that same money on a sleeve if it makes me happy?

Tattoo only has to matter to one person, and thats the person that wears it. You get a tattoo, its YOUR tattoo. Dont have to explain or justity it to anybody. People like to hate. Everybody has their own tastes. My opinion on Soven's tattoo? Not my style, but not to say it isn't his. And thats really the only person that matters. I hear he can jump the wake really high too!
