Is this too much $$$ for a 2001.

Here's a few pictures of a 1985 2001model nautique that I am looking at. It has 389 hours on it and the interior is in really good shape.
What do you think?

that looks mighty clean, if it runs smooth and has scene regularly scheduled maintnance then I'd say thats a steal

If it really only has 389 hrs and runs good that is not a bad price. A couple other things you will want to check out is the gelcoat (cracks can be expensive to repair) and the floor (make sure it is not soft or rotting). I'm sure you have heard this before, but you WILL NOT find a better wakeboard boat for under 10k. I bought an 87 2001 in Feb and couldn't be happier. When weighted, the wake is as good, if not better, than a lot of newer 'wakeboard boats'. My only complaint is the lack of room inside.

I've read as much as possible on the 2001 (on this site) and most is positive. I'm also looking at a 89 mastercraft prostar 190 for the same price but with 1200 (or so hours) and a 88 certurion trutrac2 with 630hrs that is 1000$less than both. Both of the boats look like they are in really good shape. I've only heard negative things about the Centurion but, it would be a huge upgrade from what I'm used to and the mastercraft, I feel, has a more modern look to it., although I've heard the 2001 wake is better.
Any thoughts?

My oppinion is based on what I have read (I was in the same situation as you in Feb) and not because I have been in either boat.

With that said...I would stay away from the centurion. I have heard they don't throw a good wake at all and don't have very good resale - and why does it look like the hull changes by the back of the boat in the pic? As far as the 190, I would take a 2001 over a 190. I heard that they don't throw a very good wake unless you put A LOT of weight in it (even then, not as good as the 2001) - And when you weight it, the boat sits very low in the water. The 190 is a closed bow, direct drive just like the 2001. The only thing you would get with the 190 is a "newer" looking boat - BUT, I don't think that would be worth what you would be giving up in wake. The 190 also has 3X the hours the Nauti has. I have heard that the Mastercraft 205 throws a better wake than the 190, but still sits low when weighted.

Not a bad price. 8000 would be a steal. If you have to put 500 into the trailer, 1500 into a monster tower{with install, theres a hell of alot of foam,so i had mine done} 1400 for pefect pass{installed}Thats a total of 11,500. In 2-3 years you can sell it for at least 11,000 with those options. Oh yea another 350 for acme prop.Low hours and good upholstry wow! Just walk around in the boat to check for weakspots esp. by the battery area and check to make sure none of the screws that hold the engine mounts to the transom are loose or turn to indicate rot. Small cracks{hairline} need to be filled with epoxy resin after you buy if those are the only cracks and what trevor says. Good luck i only weigh mine with 750-950# of sac's, but i think people are weighing with more. You can keep that old trailer and keep your eyes open for a good used tandem if you really wan't. New tandem is 3,000 for the narrow SN 2001, but you probibly can find a 96 or up trailer for 1000-1500 if you keep your eyes peeled. Good luck. Can't go wrong just not a lot of room..

Nautique seems to be the winner so far.
The reason I have heard that they have the extrusions on the centurion is because it is supposed to cut down on spray. (? ok then - good idea looks strange to me)The price is lower.
I'm going to call and get them to hold the 2001 for me.

The wake on the 2001 with just side sacks is very nice, ride at about 80 feet out, pretty clean wake @ 22

Dennis provides some good info, but you absolutely should NOT fill gelcoat cracks with epoxy. Epoxy turns yellow in the sun. You'll be sorry. I speak from experience.

I also speak as a person who has owned/operated a half dozen MC Prostar 190s ranging from 1984 to 1999 year models. I was out in the 1999 model this past weekend. You have to work pretty hard to get even a medium sized wake out of it, not a good boarding wake in my opinion, but kicks butt for slalom skiing.

2001 all the way, no question, especially if it is in good condition. Take care of it and it will hold its value.

Doctor Octagon, would you recommend an older MC prostar as a first boat. Im not lookin for now but hopefully in the future. From what i understand they are extremly reliable (is this true?), i hear that dont throw a good wake (but thats ok, im a slalom skier 1st, wakeboarder 2nd... Any thoughts?

do a compression check on any boat you buy... along with all the other stuff.

I agree with Cody. The reliability of an older boat depends not only on the original construction, but also how well it has been cared for over the years. A compression check is a pretty good and relatively simple/cheap way to assess the condition of an older motor. You want high compression that is about equal on all 8 cylinders. Other aspects are easier to judge based upon the naked eye. FYI, the MC Prostar 205 also has a nice slalom wake, but that one can be built up to a decent size for wakeboarding.

didn't they used to call the 2001's tuna-tique's because of the giant slalom wake? anyway, the 2001's wake is pretty large for a closed bow direct drive.

It's a good price. I may be selling my 1989 Ski Nautique 2001 and my price will be several thousand more. But then, I have a custom trailer and I have restored the gelcoat, stickers, stripes, interior, etc.

If the boat runs well, you will not find a better wakeboard boat anywhere near $10k.

I picked up the boat yesterday! My wife and I left our place @ 5:15am and arrived in Minneapolis at around 2pm we left at around 5:15 and arrived at home at 3:30am. I am tired...I'll post a couple picks when I get my Joystick tower.

Big Ed, how much weight are you using? I've ridden behind a 205 with no weight and the wake was nothing. But I've also ridden behind one that had 3 fatsacs and 4 people and the wake was very impressive.

I picked up the 2001. I managed to only put it in the water once so far. I put about 400 lbs. of weight in the back and was really happy with the wake. I'm going back to the lake tomorrow and will load it up properly with 550 lbs. I'm still waiting for my tower and hoping it arrives before I leave. Quite a few people have stopped to look at it. No one has seen an inboard before!
