As I was getting the boat ready for season I was fine tuning the stereo and the sub kept cutting out when I turned the volume up. I would turn the bass knob on the sub down and it would not cut out at loud volumes. The amp is cutting the sub off so is the amp the problem? Is this a bad combo? This is the setup that came with the boat so any info would be appreciated!!! sub I am running... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8266342&type=product&id=11702897 80974 Amp I am running... http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=17091

Probably just a low voltage situation, check to make sure the battery is fully charged.

Pull your sub out and check the connectors. The wires broke on mine several times. The sub finally went and I replaced it with a Kicker. I would have went with Fosgate, but their higher end subs were too deep for the factory box. The Kicker hits enough harder that it flexes the factory box. I am going to upgrade to a custom box in the future, but it was an easy fix for now.

Check your batteries charge first as hate N pain said. If that doesn't fix it, it sounds like your sub is trying to draw more power then the amp can give it. It will depend on how your sub is wired as well. Being that it is a 4 ohm dual voice coil, you could be either running at 8 ohm or 2 ohm. 8 Ohm if its wired in series, 2 if its parrellel. And it depends on how your amp is wired for running the sub. Is it bridged to be one channel or is it still in 2 channel mode? Its always better to over power your sub, then underpower it. Would recommend either way to upgrade your sub amp to a mono amp.

possibly turn down the gain on the amp a quarter of a turn or so. that might help w/ the amp shutting off. also, verify the volted. Do you notice the problem while the boat is turned off? what about when the boat is turned on?

Looks like a dual 4 ohm sub. how do you have it wired? My guess is your wiring it to show 2ohms, the amp is just cutting out b/c it's not stable at 2ohm when bridged. I'm with Nadams. that sub is not a good match for that amp, IMO.

I think I will need a stronger amp. The batteries are fully charged. The setup is what came with the boat. I am not sure how it is wired. The amp is mounted pretty deep and I have trouble getting back there to see. I will try to take a look at it tonight. Thanks for all the info...

Eric if that's what came with your boat you have a warranty issue. Make them switch out that amp, you should have the RF 325.1 sub amp and not that 2 channel amp. Looks like they installed the wrong amp at the factory. They use those 325.2 amps for the tower speakers.

Good info Nu Bu. I have a 4 chennel amp pushing the tower speakers and that 2 channel amp with the sub. I will look into that and see what my dealer says. Thanks

Checked it out today and the sub is bridged to the amp. I re wired the sub so it was on one channel and it did not turn off. However, when the volume is at low levels the bass is very weak. WHats the best way to fix this so it hits hard on both low and high volumes. I have a bass boost knob that I can adjust it right by the wheel. Should I get a different amp?

Get an equalizer and you can have the sub on a totally different volume than your regular speakers.

Eric they put the wrong amp in there, tell them you want them to swap it out for the correct amp. Or if you want to keep that one you could just buy that sub amp from the website you listed for $130.

NuBu it doesn't really matter if it is the wrong amp or not. The amp does not have enough power to properly power the sub. Either way Eric you really should upgrade to a larger amp. You are currently underpowering the sub, which decreases life, and decreases how hard it can hit. Over powering is always better. (Message edited by thesack on April 21, 2008)

That amp will eat the factory sub. You can always bridge a 2 ch amp to use it as a 1 ch amp (which is what the factory did). I have the same amp in my boat and it has plenty of power for a single sub, unless you upgrade to a high end power hungry sub. The speaker wire they used was cheap and broke at the sub connector three times from the motion of the boat or the sub (not sure which). The frame on the sub finally broke and I replaced the sub.

We know kevin but he said he had the dual 4 ohm sub, you can't bridge a 2 channel amp to that unless it's stable. His amp wasn't stable bridged at 2 ohms.

Kevin, you are correct for the subwoofer you show above, Rockford Fosgate P210S4, that the amp that was indicated by Eric (Rockford Fosgate Punch 325.2)would provide efficent enough power. P210S4 200RMS 400 Max, Punch 325.2 Max RMS at 4 ohm 325x1 when bridged. But in this case the subwoofer indicated by Eric (Rockford Fosgate P3D412) is under powered by the Punch 325.2 Amp. P3D412 500RMS 1000 Max. The Punch amp can not provide enough power to the P3D412 Sub. Eric, if i read what you posted correctly, you rewired your amp from being bridged, to operating at 1 channel, leaving the other channel unused? If that is the case, that would indicated that your impedence was too low for the amp to handle. The amp when bridged is only stable at 4 ohms, and the sub, more then likely is wired as a 2 ohm sub. And that would also mean that you are only providing 160 watts to the sub now. If you want the sub to hit harder upgrade to an amp that is a mono block and is stable at least to 2 ohm, if not 1 ohm. I would recommend either of the kickers i stated above, or if you really want to spend the money find the MTX 81001. That is what i am running and it is amazing.
