I started riding late last season and only had an old ski rope. Now I'm looking into buying a good new wake line and need some advice. I'm especially interested in knowing if I should get a non strech or some stretch line and why. What's the difference.
( BTW I did read the thread on which brands you prefer a while back )

thanks for any input.

Riding a wakeboard uses load and release techniques. Stretch in the line makes this almost impossible because the line stretches. Most riders prefer a non-stretch line like spectra. Others, including myself, prefer a limited stretch line like tak because it is easier on the shoulders during landings. It is personal preference so try both, if possible.

The ONLY way to go is NON-STRETCH. Wakeboarding is all about loading the line for pop and using the line for controlled landings. A stretchy rope is like driving a car with non-responsive accelerator and sloppy steering.

Any spectra line will do. Most love the yellow jacket (or equivalent). Some prefer thinner lower mass lines.

Geeze, I started this sport with a non-spectra low-stretch "wakeboarding" rope. Then, after a couple years with spectra, I happened to use the old rope while traveling and it was pathetic. I could hardly ride and I could not stand it.

I never thought I was a line snob until I rode a no stretch and a low stretch the same day. I have the yellow jacket, and my buddy has a low stretch. I found myself getting pulled over forward quite a bit using the low stretch.

i used to use a cheap poly e accurate line that came with my board, and i just got a good spectra line this past summer, and it makes a big difference with pop, you recive much more pop with a non stretch line with less edging compared to a ski line or poly e line.

FYI - Low stretch tournament waterski slalom rope (polypropeylene)- 3% or less; Tak line - .3%; Spectra .09% or less. Spectra ropes will stretch about 6 feet when new. Some of the pros tie one end to a tree and the other to the hitch on their truck for a few hours and pull until the stretch is gone. The rope will lengthen due to the space between the strands and some of the latent stretch of the material.

The main disadvantage of spectra is line handling. Tangles are a nightmare. Hardline makes a good spectra with a core to make it handle easier and float. It is worth the extra cash for the Hardline or something similar. Tak is naturally easier to handle and once it is set, it has very little stretch. It does not recoil, which is what the major objection to stretch. If you can, try both and see what you prefer.
