Ok so basically right now I am shooting with some pretty LOW END lenses. Crap in fact. My question is if you had no more than $700 to spend on a lens and had basically nothing what would you buy?

40% of my time is spent shooting wake from the boat and the other 60% ranges from portraits and wildlife to landscapes. Pretty much a little bit of anything and everything. I need something that can do everything LOL.

Any suggestions?

get the 70-200mm f/4 for $650 at b&h (try to find used at b&h, fredmiranda.com and amazon).
try to scrounge a bit more and also get the 50mm f/1.8 at b&h for $110.

How is that 50mm gonna be good shooting from a boat? Just cropping the hell out of the shot if you want a close up or just recommended for the portrait aspect of his shooting?

Like Joe said 70-200 f-4. this lens is very sharp (see Walt's wake shots) Fred Miranda.com has a great buy/sell forum, you can pick a good used one up off FM for about $500, avoid ebay. Amazon has a couple used 50mm 1.8 right now for $95.00

Tamron -

I shoot Tamron lenses and they are tack sharp.

Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 goes for around $700. Focus is a tad slow but incredibly sharp.

I use it for portraits and action and does great. I can post an image if you want.

The new Canon 15-85 efs with the new 3D IS looks to be a winner.
