20" wheels on a trailer

i was wondering if anyone has had any major problems with putting 20" on the trailers im about to buy a new boat and was going to put 20" rims on the trailer. I work for a rim company so getting them isnt a problem. thanks

Check with the "Ya Heard" me guy if he dosent have them Im shure he will be getting them soon

i don't think they'll fit w/o modification? I think the biggest you can go is around 17

does'nt changing the wheel size affect the gross weight rating for the wheel and change the carrying weight of the trailer??

You'd have to be quite careful not to short cut any corners over curbs. It'd be a whole different story with 20's.

Also, tight turns in general, you may spin a bead. As far as fitting, it should fit as long as you pair it up with a low-profile tire. That would take up a similar amount of room as a normal rim with trailer tires that have a tall sidewall, right?

But that would be way pimp. I think I have seen it done before, looks hella hot. Do it and post pix

What kind of problems would this pose trailing at high speeds? Would it be similar to the Carlisle tire escapades?

yea i went to boat show and i saw about 5 trailers that had them. They all had the Good Year GT 2 tires which is a suv tire. I know the load rating is a problem. There going to match my trucks 20"s the boat is a 06 x-star i will definatly post pics. What i might do is when i go to local lakes put the 20"s on and if i do any travling (like to the river) i will put the stock tires and wheels. I know that the wheels need to be a +0 offset and no wider the a 8 inch. we will see how it works out

I think i had heard something other than just the load rating, but I can't remember what it was. Your idea seems reasonable though, we want to see pics!

There was an orange/black BU with the Ford Harley 20' wheels and 275/45-20 Goodyear 106v max air 44psi 6ply and 2094lbs.

yes trailer tires are pretty different in construction to normal passenger vehicle tires... kinda forgot how though haha, sorry something about the plies, and being radial or not..

most new trailer tires are radials now. The main concern is load index and plies. You should have at least a 6ply or load range C tire.

Keep in mind, the larger side walls take a lot of the road vibration out of the ride. If you have a newer trailer with torsion axles, you probably would do any harm, but watch the width.

I have 20's on my trailer. Had to have special wide fenders to fit them.. Have had no problems towing with them. I have a 06 Sanger v230, so its a large boat that weights around 4000 pounds. Just watch the curbs!

When I bought the boat it was on a custom trailer with the 20's! Had the polished stainless wide fenders already installed and a few other nice options that don't come on a standard trailer. I will post up some pics later today for you guys.

how close are the 2 tires?...it looks like they are almost touching but they wouldn't be!

I don't think popping a bead will be a problem. I just sold this setup and put probably about 2500 miles on it without too much trouble. The first 500 miles sucked when I lost 2 wheels cause I didn't tighten down the lugs after I drove it a few miles. All new studs and I was back in action.

the tires are close to the fenders in side, about 2" of clearance though. I have put about 1,500 miles on the trailer so far and haven't had any issues. I hade a clear coat put on the stainless fenders , so that way when people step on them they aren't getting scratched up. But most of the time no shoes allowed! lol

Ont he tyres issue, maybe running some run flats would be an idea.. they have a super thick sidewall so load rating may be better. something like a Good Year NCT5 Run-on Flat or something? they won't be cheap though - look at about $400 a tyre!

surfside- how big is your boat? That require any specail permits to tow or anything?

Yeah, that trailer was kinda a joke. I built it up to do one thing, draw attention and it worked. The boat was 34'10" long, 11'4" wide. I was supposed to have special permits but never got stopped in traveling 2500 miles not counting the original trip from OK with the boat from a different dealer which was an additional 1200 miles. If I was ever stopped I would have been screwed. Anyone ever see the wakeboarding photos behind this? You can see them in the "current news" section of www.surfsideboats.com

two 8.1s burn 24gph at cruise(3000 rpm) that boat had a bunch of people and believe it or not an additional 1200lbs of fat sacks on the photo of Jeff House hitting the wake seen above. Total weight was right around 15,000 lbs, just plain stupid.

If you look up a Regal 3350 and 3360 on boat test it shows these boats burning nearly 50gph at WOT, a calculation I never wanted to finish while I owned this rig, I'm glad to be footing the gas bill behind 21 footers again.
