so i'm running low on space on my current 160 gig hard drive. I'm planning on buying a new 320gb SATA 3.0 drive. I want to have the SATA as my primary and the 160 ATA as storage for video and photos. So im wondering what is the best way to transfer everything over from the 160 to the new drive. I would like to avoid having to reinstall all the programs and reactivating windows if possible. what is the best way to do this?

On the Mac either SuperDuper or Carbon copy Cloner (both free programs) work great for that.

i have a pc so i guess norton ghost will do. i actually have the program already but i wasn't sure if i would have to reactivate windows after the transfer using that utility.

thanks for the input, if anyone else knows of any other tools that work good go ahead and post it, im going to order the hdd tonight.

Taylor,

As long as you are going bigger you should have no trouble using norton ghost. It will image your current hard drive on the new one transferring everything including any viruses. You may want to run virus protection first.

so i got a new 500 gig SATA drive and when i was installing it the Seagate software that came with it automatically gave me an option of setting the new hdd up as a boot device and therefore copied over the old harddrive onto it, thus solving my question of transfering hdds.

Everything is working fine on the new hard drive EXCEPT, for some odd reason i lost a lot of my icon pictures in my start menu, the program is listed, but its picture is gone and replaced with a blank white/blue window icon showing that the icon cannot be found.

when i right click on the program and click change icon this error message comes up, "windows cannot find the file %systemRoot%/Installer/{b2f5...etc}.exe"

how did that happen and how do i fix it?
