Can this be done? The bike has a auto clutch and a disk brake set up. With a few mod's and some aftermarket parts I think it can be done. Has anyone tried this?? And do you think it has enough H.P What is the minimum H.P. needed ? any help would be much appreciated

We did it with a quad. Put the bike on a stand, put a tug strap around a tree, pulled both back wheels off and stuck a rim on one tire as the spool. The hardest part is getting a consistent speed and proper feed around the spool.

yea I am planning on welding a guide for the line hopefully it will work. also rollers on the guide would probably help a little also.sounds like alot of work but a winch costs about 2 to 3 K. just cant afford that right now. really eager to set up a pool and rail and start winching.

Anyone know how to make a homemade winch without a minibike or quad and how much it would cost?

A mini-bike or go-kart has 90% of all the parts you need. A quad is overkill and then you have speed control issues.

What you need:

Engine: The ones I have seen are usually around 5 HP, more is better. The engine should have a governor (most "Briggs&Stratton type engines do).

Centrifugal clutch.

Chain, sprockets and shaft: This is your gear reduction.

A drum that will mount to the shaft: A wheel, minus the tire, will work.

If you buy a go-kart you will get all these pieces for probably a lot less than if you purchased them individually. You will need to make some modifications, as you will need to have an anchor point for the winch frame directly in line with the spool. If the anchor point isn't inline then the frame will want to twist and the rope won't feed onto the spool properly.

If you want to go really cheap, I have also seen this done with a truck! Park the truck, jack up one rear wheel. Replace the tire with an empty wheel. Operate in reverse so the rope feeds on the bottom of the wheel instead of the top, otherwise you might need a roller to guide the rope under the truck body.

Haha we made a winch out of a pressure washer from lowes.....of course we bought the motor and frame for $50 but after parts and all we had a winch for under $300.....rope and all!! We pulled for first time today worked great!
