So im curious from experience what boat would come out infront of the other (wake, peformance, interior, ect ect)?

The reason I'm bringing up this question is because I met a guy today who owns both boats, and they sit next to eachother on his dock infront of his 4.5 million dollar place. Just questioning if he were to only keep one, what you guys would do.

cant go wrong with either. they are my two favorite boats

I would go with MC. The VLX is a nice boat with an awesome wake, but I have had bad experiences with malibu.

Leo...wasn't your Malib an older model? There are people that have had bad experiences with every manufacturer out there. Both are great boths. The wake and performance of both can be top notch when weighted correctly. From there (interior, bling, etc.) only has to do with your preferences.

So, not ONLY because I own one...but I say Malibu!

Eubanks, the guy asked which of the 2 would we pick if we had all the money in the world. I had a bad experience with malibu, so I would go with MC.

Leo, your credibility suffers every time you slam Malibu without mentioning that you ran your boat in brackish water without closed cooling for what was it, 600 hrs?

my buddy had an 07' VLX, and had all types of problems with it. Let me say that the wake on both boats in top notch, but his boat was always going in for repair.

So he started riding behind my x-star every day while his VLX was being serviced, and acutally liked the x-star more and more as he came out. About 2 weeks ago he sold his VLX and 3 days ago bought an 07 x-star.

That could have been just one case, but it seemd that whenever people would ride his boat then myne, they would always throw compliments at my boat and how they liked it more.

I have ridden behind both boats many many times, and I also prefer the x-star. I would even choose the 23 LSV over the VLX, becuse of how much space you have in the LSV (and just as nice of wake)

Great story Chris, except my buddy had an X-star, had all sorts of problems loved my VLX, sold his X-star, bought an 07 VLX and now could not be happier.

My 96 VLX has needed nothing more than regular maintenance, a starter, and an alternator. But, with a $4.5M crib, I doubt reliability is a big concern. I think the guy should step up and have dad buy him a Nautique too, then nobody will ever question his taste in inboards again.

Theres not a perfect boat, they all can have problems. The dude is smart when one breaks he uses the other. Although, I bet he has a sticker on his Bu that says "My other boat is a XStar" J/K

I prefer the style and wake of the X-Star, but both are very nice boats to have. Personaly I would not have a Malibu in my area, due to the dealer. My buddy has had tons of problems with his dealer. Not his VLX, just the dealer. Everytime it goes in for service or warranty work, it comes out with scratches on the boat, torn seat cushins, extremely dirty, ect. He now drives all the way from Tampa to Orlando to have the boat serviced and warrantied.

The point is that your local dealer will make it or break it when it comes to boat ownership, IMO.

very true Byrd!!! Both boats are hella sweet.

Paradise watersports (malibu dealer) in Arizona are some of the nicest/coolest people to deal with in the sport. I have heard stories (only heard) of certain problems with other dealers in this area. Whether they are true or not (don't care), I only know that my boat and myself get treated first class at Paradise. This will only motivate me to have them service my boat and or buy things from them only.

The dealer and professionalism is key to owning a sweet boat that is very similar to another, not the boat! They are both great boats.

So, buy both if your rich!

I love my 06VLX, but I can't even get my trailer brakes fixed right from my dealer. It took 3 times to get my wedge fixed right from my dealer. I guess 3rd time is a charm. Each time a take it there it takes 2 weeks to get it back.

2nd Malibu VLX and would buy another one if I was in the market. Those 247 are sweet.

On the lakes I go to it is rare to see an X-Star, because everyone has a Malibu or a Sanger.

I always notice the X-Stars though, they are the boats that porpus when no one is up front. I see them at the dealerships at the end of the season still up on those ramps with balloons on them. Cute boat.

I love Mastercrafts...especially the x1, formerly known as the x2, formerly known as the x-star, formerly known as 10 other names. I will say that it takes one good marketing department to keep selling the same exact boat for 15 years with only having to change the name to keep people buying new ones! Suckers!

I'd sell em both. If he has a 4.5 million dollar house and can't afford at least 4 boats then he better sell it all..LOL

At least its only one boat model per hull shape. Its not shared by other models, or when they change the deck and call it something else. When you have a proven hull like the X1 why get rid of it?
Old     (big_ed_x2)      Join Date: Jul 2004       07-25-2007, 12:38 PM Reply
it is marketing...

They had an X-star that everybody liked.I think they saw an opportunity to used the name x-star since it's such a great name, they change it to x-2 until people get used to and familiar with it and start liking the name x-2 and then they go to the x-1.I can't say I would be surprised if they changed it again in a few years and named the new boat an x-1.

FWIW..... Now that I've spent some time behind an X-star I don't even want to ride behind anything else. No joke. It's a totally different style wake and a lot of people have trouble adapting at first (namely me, LOL), but once you're used to it...... Mmmmm, good. It's got such smooth lift and a huge transition.

Your buying the dealer to a certain extent, I take my SAN to paradise (bu dealer) so dont get totally caught up in picking one boat over another just because of the dealer. I have a san my cousin has a vlx and my work has 2 xstars, I ride behind all of them atleast once a week, with that being said I would only trade my nautique for one boat ever and thats the VLX. get the bu

both have great wakes
both are great boats

the 'Bu is more comfy
the Xstar is bigger

I went with the VLX because of price, comfier, dealer.....but the Mastercraft
dealer in my area is great too

I love my 'Bu

i had 05-06-07 vlx with a acme 1235 and another 1000 on top of the factory ballast,no wedge and 4 people the wake is top, interior from malibu is also very nice, maybe a little to much carpet here and there.Very nice boat.
I never drove the x-star only a x-45&x-2 but my new x-star will arrive late september.
I got a better deal at the mc dealer btw the euro/dollar value made it al possible at the moment,..an x-star was always above my budget.
Your friend doesn,t have that problem, keep both.

finally got a chance to ride behind a new '07 XStar the other night. all i can say is wow! it did take a little while to get used to, but after that it was sweetness. i thought that my '00 XStar was amazing, but now i want to find an additional $40K, lol. between the VLX wake and the XStar wake i would have to go with the XStar. both are sweet boats though, and have awesome wakes...but i liked the boot that i got off of the XStar quite a bit more.

I have an 07' X Star and ride behind a VLX about once a week and both have their up's and down's and in the end the X is just a bit more flashier and more expensive of course. Both are great boats and both throw out awesome wakes, you can't go wrong with either!
Old     (hawaiianstiln)      Join Date: Oct 2004       07-26-2007, 8:08 AM Reply
isn't the X-15 more comparable to the VLX in length and beam?

Or has this become a comparison between to MFG's premier wakeboarding boats?
Old     (eubanks01)      Join Date: Jun 2001       07-26-2007, 11:26 AM Reply
I think the comparison should be X-Star to WSLSV. Those boats are more similar in size. And the LSV wake is basically the same as the VLX.
Old     (fullspeed)      Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Santa Cruz County CA       07-26-2007, 3:07 PM Reply

Brannon - Why do you think the VLX is the flagship Malibu? I think it definitely used to be, but these days it's both IMO. There actually might be more sponsored pros running the LSV than the VLX but I'm not sure.
Old     (fullspeed)      Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Santa Cruz County CA       07-27-2007, 8:30 PM Reply
Eubanks, You may be right. The reason I called it their flagship wakeboard boat is I remember the video's that they use to have on the Malibu website and they called the VLX their flagship boat. That was probably a year ago or two.

Who knows the VLX, LSV or even the 247. I guess any of those boats could qualify as their flagship boat.
Old     (05mobiuslsv)      Join Date: Apr 2006       07-27-2007, 8:33 PM Reply
The 247 isn't the flagship, it's the LIMO.

There is a guy that has one on the lake my friend lives on 2 docks down. He it's red and black and he got every option malibu offered.

We've been through two Xstars and I owned an LSV. They are both great boats and I would own both again.

By the way, in-boards usually only porpus when you're stupid enough to drive across the lake grossly unbalanced. Porposing has never been a problem in the Xstars or the Malibu

We own an X1, I am yet to ride behind a new X Star, but I do have to say that the VLX is one sweet ride. A neighbor on the lake just got one and it is such a nice boat and throws a sick stock wake with full ballast and the power wedge. Although its not a fair comparison, I would take the VLX over our boat any day.
Old     (number55)      Join Date: Jul 2007       07-30-2007, 3:29 PM Reply
look, both are good boats that put out good wakes, everybody knows that. But....mastercraft prides themselves on "foam filled stringers." malibu's are hollow. so, mastercrafts motormounts are lagbolted where malibus are threwbolted. ANother problem, mastercraft sandwhichs thier motor mounts in fiberglass, anyone who has ever worked with fiberglass knows it doesnt adhere to metal...so the VTX hands down.

I was just telling somebody that only needing the stock ballast is one of the reasons I really like the VLX. Press a few buttons, maybe put down the Wedge if you prefer and you're set. I do have about 400 lbs of Pop bags throughout the boat, but that's it.

I filled a sack for wakesurfing last weekend and I couldn't find my pump. That got me to thinking when was the last time that I actually filled fat sacks. I think it was almost two years ago when we had Sean O'Brien, Jimmy Wolf and Mike Schwenne out for a TV show. That was when the boat was just a few months old. Call me lazy, but I'll take any boat that will rid me of the need for extra fat sacks!
