I have a 4 way light plug on my '98 4Runner. My new MC trailer has a flat 5 way with the extra plug being for the disc break disengagement when backing up. Any ideas on what I need to do to make my car and boat compatible? Can I but a 5 way flat for my car and have in installed? I could not find such a device when I searched. Should I replace the trailer and car with something more common like the 7 way round ones? Thanks for any help. Billy
This is just a trick but you can plug the 5 way into the 4 way BUT your trailer brakes won't release to back up so to get by until you can rewire your truck plug to a 5 way flat just unplug the 5 and 4 and flip one around whenever you are ready to back up and that will trick the trailer into releasing the brakes. We used to do it all the time at the boat dealership... But eventually you'll need to rewire your truck plug to a 5 way flat so your brakes release.
until you find a 5-way male plug, you can just run a separate wire for the reverse lights into the 5-way female on the trailer with a male bullet connector.
As mentioned they sell 5 flat harnesses for your vehicle. I bought one at a local RV shop and did it myself. You will need to splice into the reverse light, but it is really pretty easy to do yourself.
I've rented trailers from 2 different U-Haul shops in my area (central NJ) and my impressions are that this company has the least knowledgable (and in one location the least friendly) service staff I've had to endure. They are lucky they have a monopoly on trailer rentals. But I guess its not the same all over which is good for the rest of you. ;)
BTW, when you filp the four way plug to release the brakes, you have to turn the lights on. It is the parking brake lights that will be connected to the reverse soleniod, and the turn signals will be backwards.
Extreme Trailer sent one with mine. Malibu boats in cali come on Extreme. Same Malibu dealer also sells the round stock chevy plug with a 5 way to the trailer.
