For an AMP under $250.00 what would you buy?

depends on what you are powering? Those Clarion apx480m amps can be had for half that price off e-bay if you have the space. I have a "leftover" one in my truck powering the whole system. If you are limited on space and alternator power the Alpine's are a good choice.

Powering 4 Polk DB 651's in the boat, space is not a concern.

thanks

I know it's not one you're asking about, but have you looked at the Kicker ZX650.4: 85W x 4 @ 4ohm. can be found for > $250 on Ebay.

Not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but a solid amp for the price.

I am welcome to any and all inputs, it has been years since I have installed a system and I know quality changes all the time, what was good 10 years ago could suck now, and vice verse.

One other question, if I add a 10 inch sub could I install it in the lower front section of my bench seat facing forward out into the boat.

I guess to simplify my question would it sound OK to have the front of the speaker exposed (pointing) into the boat by the floor?

Boat = Chaparral 186 SSi 220HP Merc

Your boat is quieter than most. The Clarion APX480M should do pretty well. You can even power all four off the front channels and bridge the rears to the 10" sub (as I did in my truck). This system should do pretty well in your boat. You might even save enough $$$ to pop for some wakeboarding lessons or something else more fun than brand name bragging rights.

I've grown out of needing brand name stuff, I just have'nt put together any systems since high school (long time ago) and do not know what is good quality equipment anymore.

If you or anyone has a better suggestion on the AMP please let me know, I am open to all suggestions.

cheap, and decent rated power. Audiobahn and Hi fonics get my vote.

I think Brandon has a Directed Electronics 2205. My buddy has one in his X45 powering most of his system. I am quite impressed by the amp, it's a nice easy compact solution. I even considered buying Brandon's amp myself until I realized I already had 3 "spare" amps on my shelf.

Alpine for mids, Hifonics or Fosgate for subs.
