I'm going to look at a 2002 X Star tomorrow. I have all intentions of purchasing but wanted to ask if there is anything I should watch for. I'm pretty certain that one of the ballast pumps is not working. Other than that, everything works.........or so I'm told.

Thanks for any and all replies

Maintenance records, abuse (any abuse seen may mean more unseen), how the engine runs (is it strong, check the oil to see if it is really dark or for water (engine and transmission), gelcoat appearance (if he took care of gelcoat, he probably took care of the boat) gelcoat stress cracks and spiders (especially around the tower mounts and including under the boat), check freeze plugs to see if they have been replaced (froze the block), has it been in salt water (check the trailer for excessive rust). I could go on but go with your gut. Ask the guy basic boat questions. How much weight did he run in it and how often. How many hours are on the boat. If he ran 3000 lbs 90% of the time for the last 5 years I would be worried (my opinion). If you don't trust the guy or get a bad vibe, walk away. A ballast puppy pump will cost you $200-300 plus installation so adjust price for that.

If it is the one in Georgia it looks like a pretty good deal.

Make sure all of the ballast pumps work and fill the tanks until they overflow. Then make sure they empty. Ask if they have installed or if it has the yellow impellers if they know.

Of course get down underneath the boat and check the hull. Have they been taking it and grounding it. Also check the prop. If it is bent or shows marks that it has been repaired check the drive shaft.

Better yet pay a mechanic who really knows boats to check it out.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Matt, yes it was the one in GA.

Made the trip Saturday looked it over very good before I even saw the sales person. We took it out on the water and everything worked just like it should. Got the price down a little for a missing advertised item and took her home.

My twin boys (11 1/2) don't have a clue. I've got it hidden at my parents place and will have the boat docked at the pier, when they get to the lake Friday afternoon...........I can't wait.

This is our second MasterCraft, I will have had the last one for 29 years, when it goes up for sale in the spring.

Since I have twins we've already made a deal on the cars. I'll match $ for $ what they save but I've put a maximum match on it. I want them to have an investment in their cars.

I guess what I'm really saying is that I wanted the boat as much as they did so I went ahead and got it.

I know of two people that looked it over before I did, one of which went across the road and bought a new MC and there was another on the way from Texas to see it.

I'm just glad that it all worked out.
