My buddy is ordering a new boat and was originally planning on getting a white trailer but has heard that rust spots will bleed through the white paint and be a lot more noticeable. Has anyone experienced this? Is it more a matter of someone not taking care of their trailers or is there just nothing that can be done to help this with a white trailer? Thanks for the input.

It will be fine. If its a boatmate trailer get painter galvanized instead of steel.

If you hit any brackish or salt a painted trailer is a big mistake. I purchased a galvanized trailer. It may be ugly at first but as the years wear on it looks a whole lot better. Most times my trailer sits empty in the yard so I don't really care what it looks like but I do care about the rust.

This exact issue is why we ordered an orange trailer instead of a white one. Trailers get nicked up all the time. They then go in the water and rust happens. Rust will show through more on a white trailer.
