I'm guessing the plate on top of the engine is primarily a cover. Is this correct? Does anyone know the size and type of bolts that attach it? They seem to be some sort of modified allan nut.

Sounds like a Torx head.

It looks a bit like a torx head but a fairly large size (ie. way bigger than the screwdriver torx heads I'm used to seeing). Anybody know the size? Thanks

Yep, they range from a T8 up to a T60. Go buy a cheap set from Walmart, should have most of the common sizes.

I don't think it's just a cover,I think it's part of the intake.

That is the upper half of the intake plenum. If you look close the throttle body is attach to the top half of the plenum. Don’t take off unless you have to will be a gasket in there.

Thanks, I guess I'll leave it for now. I wanted to take it off to get access to a couple of hoses on the front for the heater but I was able to just barely reach them with it on.

If you have a pic how you hooked up the heater to the engine I'll be your best friend forever. Haha. Seriously though, I have the same engine and almost the same boat and will be hooking up the heater next week.

Sweet, that helps a lot Brandon. Where did you get that manual from? My merc manual doesn't have that sort of info.

Todd:

I have my boat at the storage yard so no pictures. I think what the dealer did was install a new housing over the thermastat that had an inlet and outlet fitting. The hoses were run up the port side of the boat to the heater core in the front storage compartment. If this thread continues for a few more days and I have a chance to get out to the boat I will take some pictures.

JT, the diagram from Brandon helps a lot, but a picture is worth many diagrams, so if you get one that'd be awesome.
