I did these a few years ago from some Hi8 video. Its a little crude but I'm no pro.

You just need something like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. The only way to do it from pictures is to have a 35mm camera with motor drive or an expensive digital camera that shoots 5+ frames per sec.

Video is the cheapest way to go.

Import, cut, and paste.

Seriously, you need to learn to edit video and use a paint program on your PC. After that you will be ready to ask for more details.

Canon bundles a decent photostich program in with their digital cameras. It does a decent job, and is pretty easy to use. You can do better using photoshop, etc. but it will take much longer. I did the sequence shots in my profile using Canon GL-2 in progressive and then pulled the frames using cheap-o (free) Movie Maker 2, then stitched using Canon Photostitch.
