Are those from a GoPro?

Glad you were able to successfully implement my idea :-). Sick shots! Did you have a problem keeping the camera upright?

sick sick sick angle.
b poser, board shorts over a wetsuit makes absolutely zero sense and thankfully seems like a trend that is dying, with the pros at least. Do you wear boardshorts over your wetsuit when you go surfing?

would love to see how you set this up!

Please post camera set up and how you were able to rig this up! Great shots!

BTW, Anyone notice the different positions of the camera on the rope yet the camera angle seems to remain upright? This is why I'm so curious

my guess is he rotated them after.

No he did not rotate them after.. These were just straight unedited shots from the gopro.

They're actually out right now getting some more footage with this setup

Also, I love the raley shot, I understand it's a wide angle lens.. But it really puts into perspective the distance you travel.
Old     (westsidarider)      Join Date: Feb 2003       04-03-2011, 4:47 PM Reply
Only one pic was rotated. The reason is that the gopro is mounted upright above the rope. during spins you turn your hand so the rope follows

Would you mind doing a write up on how the set up was done?

Well....... It started with a lot of cocktails one evening after my first day with the GoPro. My good friend Jeff thought of the idea and the two of us continued to ponder it while we drank our arses off that night. The next morning we barely remembered anything but somehow Jeff managed to take that drunken idea and bring it to life.

I know very little about how the mount was made other than he spent a few hours thinking about it and only an hour making it. The mount is tied into the handle so that the GoPro is stable and does not rotate around. This proto type is made of steel and the mount was all welded together. He will be working on producing an aluminum version next week

Did you take any video or just stills ?

To me, it's a style thing. Generally guys don't like seeing other guys in tight ass gear. Not me anyway. It may not make any sense to you, but it makes perfectly good sense to me. Besides, Callen is my homie so I'm allowed to give him crap.

Oh, and I rarely surf, but when I do, I trunk it.

Callen-- Pretty sick set up dude. When we do get to finally ride again, you better wear some shorts over your suit.

Damn u guys r terrible......... Yes i normally wear shorts over my suit. its spring temps n i didnt wanna get back into wet shorts after riding so i opted out of the shorts over the suit.

Walt- yea i got video. Its being edited as we speak

I'd be really interested to see how the mount works, because right now I just cant comprehend how you can have all these upright shots from the camera with the rope below, above, and beside it, without rotating the shot.
Awesome angle though, hopefully it catches on!

Awesome shots. makes me want to get a go-pro, but i already spent my quota on wake this year i think

isn't the setup just a T shaped thing with a super long trunk (of the "T") being the rod the rope goes through and that the camera is on, and the top brace of the T attached to the handle arms so as to prevent rotation?
Old     (tuneman)      Join Date: Mar 2002       04-04-2011, 9:17 AM Reply
Looks like just a rigid pipe with the rope going thru. Screw the GoPro to one end and duct tape the other end to the sides of the handle to keep it from rotating. The pics were definitely rotated after the fact. Could probably use a pvc pipe to reduce the weight. Simple concept, great pics.

every other rope cam I've seen sucked. This one produces some interesting shots, or shots worth looking at. Nice work!

I could see a piece of pvc with a counter weight at the bottom. add a couple of clamps to the rope to keep the pvc from moving up/down the rope.

nice shots!

Here you guys go. Quick video edit by Brady Sammons. All of Brady's ride is from the GoPro mounted to his board. Did not last long. GoPro's mounts are made of cheap plastic. The thing blew up after about 10 min tops of riding. Good thing he had a tether hooked up. lol

Hey everone i am Jeff, as Callen put it the mastermind of this project. I am more then pumped on the reaction from all of you guys on what we were able to do with the gopro. When we were first pondering the idea i thought it would be cool but i really didnt put much more thought into it for about a month or so. Then last week i knew we were going to go ride so i figured might as well finally build the thing. I thought about how i wanted to do it for a few hours or so and literally just built it. I did have some concern about it limiting some tricks on landing wrapped or whatever the case may be but it did not limit us riding in any way and that is what we ended up with. I am now in the process of actually putting some real effort into it with some help from my buddy at his machine shop so the final product will be super clean. Also i know you guys are curious as to how its made, well i dont want to give it away just yet but it is not PVC w/ counter weight. I am also working on getting a patent for the final design, and yes i know how hard they are to get. Again i am really pumped on how it turned out and i am very glad that everyone has enjoyed seeing what we managed to get done and can't wait to get more footage.

And for people wondering about the angles of the stills and how they are different, four of the pictures posted up are rotated.
3 of them are 90 degrees and one of them is rotated 180 degrees

Looks like your right never winter. Im interested to find out how much effort they put into making their mount and how durable it is. It's one thing to have a simple mount that works for the grom Jus cruising but Jeff really is putting a lot of emphasis on making his version bomb proof so you don't have to worry about losing the camera, even more importantly the footage on the memory card
Old     (Fro)      Join Date: Apr 2011       04-06-2011, 12:50 PM Reply
wow they do indeed. well i guess thats what was to be expected once we got into the whole mess of things lol. either way i look at it though really all we were set out to do was simply do something different and seeing how the video and stills came out was really awesome!!! that is really what made it worth my effort. but i am still going to build a unit that will be super clean and withstand a lot and still be light. My main goal for it in the end is to be able to have it be universal and not be limited or limiting , meaning you will be able to use it anywhere in any circumstance, including a winch so countour may have me beat on the idea and marketing but it doesnt really matter to me at all really. i think what we did was still awesome and im still going to build quite a few of them for the people that have helped me out in anyway. and they will be able to use them anywhere!

Actually for the sake of argument, Does anyone remember the Muskoka Militia Volume 2 DVD made back in the early 2000s? In the bonus section there was a memorial section dedicated to Mark Kenney who passed away. It was the first handle cam I can remember seeing. Dude was sick, way before his times.
