Apparently Ebay pulled at least one of them. Second - note the first link - his feedback is minimal and the first feedback item looks like a setup "Very trustable on expensive items" - and it was only a $250 item!!! Other than that he only has a track record of 3 "sells". Having almost been scammed last week on some software with a guy posting fake feedback - i'd be really careful on this one.

i emailed him and told him id like to come view the boat and asked when he'll be available. we'll see

i had a friend who bought a crotch rocket off ebay, but he actually found a different one he was interested in first and kept trying to get title and VIN information from the guy and he couldn't/wouldn't supply it - basically we figured the bike was stolen and that's why it was offered at such a great price. so i would just make sure that the ownerhip history of the boat is all clear and that there are no liens against it or anything.

Someone on the Mastercraft owners site (tmcowners.com) noticed that the same boat is for sale on boattraderonline for $63k.

If you do a search you can still find that BU. the url that was provided must have changed... That would be a ridiculous steal, if they didnt get your money first...

My first thought is it could be like that scam when you're selling something (car truck boat...). The buyer says he'll send $25,000 when the actual selling price is only $20,000. He asks you to send him a check for the difference, $5,000. Supposedly by the time you send the check, you find out his is a fake, and he never picks up the vehicle and you're out $5,000, if you fall for it. I know this would be the other way around, but I assume they could rig something up similar. On the other hand.. why would anyway hand over money before ever seeing the boat?!?!

see message above, this is the response i got from him

Hello there and thanks for your interest,
The 2006 Mastercraft X-Star is like new, with no scratches, no marks, no hidden defects.
It looks grea and it's is in excellent condition.
I have only used it for a few times and only in fresh watter .
There are only 45 hours on the boat and engine.
This is a one owner boat and it has a clear title, which will be forwarded to you.
If you are interested in buying it the price is $31,000.00 and I'll cover the shipping cost.

The transaction will go through eBay for our own protection so they act as a neutral third party.
They will hold and insure your money until receipt of the boat in good conditon.
You will have 15 days from the time you receive the boat to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
If you wish to purchase it please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through Ebay.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Warm Regards
Michael

I have just talked to brian kline the broker for the dealer selling the boat in tennessee on boattrader.com--he also has the boat posted on yaughtworld.com for 63,000$ as well. All the information on the ebay site was copied off of one of these sites.. he said he has recieved at least 40 calls today about the boat and that the boat is still in his possession and is not really for sale on ebay. It is a complete scam...he doens't not understand how the seller plans on following through with the transaction but the boat is not for sale for 31,000$ anywhere at any time....i would assume same for the malibu....just thought i would update i tlaked to him on the phone about 5 minutes ago

Whether it is a scam or not, you would be an idiot to drop 30 grand on ANYTHING being sold by a guy with 7 feedback.
Old     (wakeboarder2687)      Join Date: Aug 2004       10-03-2006, 7:09 PM Reply
Ok, lets assume it is a scam... how does it work, he doesn't get paid until you see the boat (look at alan plotz Tuesday, October 03, 2006 - 4:18 pm). So if there is no boat, you're not out any money. Stolen? he has "clean title", check when you see the boat. It seems obvious its a scam, the picture isnt even his boat, in the message above he says 45 hrs, it says 66 on the ebay site. I'm not considering purchasing this boat, I just want to know how he could pull off this scam, if it really is one.

i say don't do it!!! he's asking for your name and address - that's all the info he is really wanting. and he's willing to pay shipping - another red flag. i think it's a scam.

Patrick,

Why don't you contact him and find out how to get added to the pre approved buyer status. Also, I am sure you will get a line about the boat being out of the country right now but it will be shipped as your money is being held in escrow by ebay (which they don't do) Have fun with it, you'll figure it out
Old     (three6ty)      Join Date: Feb 2004       10-03-2006, 7:39 PM Reply
Patrick,
The scammers are getting good!! They can send you E-bay notices and paypal notices and request for payment notices that look like they are from e-bay and the like.
They are all fake e-mails and are doctored up to look like the real deal.
What he will do is have you put it in an escrow account supposedly governed by e-bay ( but its not).
He will then have access to the funds as soon as you put it in the escrow account.
bye bye $$$ and no boat.

The only way you should buy a boat is to see it in person before handing over any money.

That makes sense Troy and E Double U... I was almost sure it was scam, I am also in no position to be buying a boat. I was just curious as to how he would do it, maybe I could start making some money on the side?? Kidding of course

I got the same email as listed above, so I responded and asked a few more questions and told him that I wanted to drive from St. Louis to TN to look at the boat and he replied the following:

"I am out of the country on business, please forward me your information so I can initiate the deal through ebay."

THIS IS A SCAM!!!!

I expressed interest in an ad like this, but told the seller that i wanted to see the boat and that i would not go through ebay for the transaction, that we had to do it in person, and a day later I got An email from ebay suspending MY account. Bullsh*t!! And if anyone has every tried to get in touch with ebay, its almost impossible to make something happen. Its ridiculous. Dont even contact people like this!!
Old     (lmtwa)      Join Date: May 2001       10-04-2006, 11:38 AM Reply
As I mentioned earlier - the 7 feedbacks (with only 3 "sells") is the tipoff. Contact Ebay - it definately looks like a scam...

Also - ask him for the serial number on the engine. That should be a good sign.

Gerry Nunn was looking at a similar deal last year about a motorhome. I told him to be REALLY careful. Fortunately he was and later found that the guy had ripped the photos off some dealers site in the west coast and had it for about 30K less.

Here's an ebay link that suggests some ways to be sure it's legit.. http://answercenter.ebay.com/thread.jspa?threadID=100001116&mod=1071012130816

Oh yeah.... would you mind sending me your SSN and mother's maiden name so I can update your account?

deal is a total scam. i work for a boat dealer and we use to carry the Fountain boat line. we had one 04 left that we put on ebay. sold the boat, but found it again listed on ebay, with the same pictures, for half of what we originally listed it for. same deal, seller was out of the country when we tried to contact them.

Its most likely a scam, I responded to an add like that from california earlier this year. His dad died and selling all his stuff, but hes out of the country. BLAH BLAH BLAH. total B.S. long story short i had wired the money after checking all the website, ebay etc. I thought it was legit. 20 minutes after trying to wire 5K to this guy the FBI called me to ask if I knew these people. Turns out these guys are pro's at this and living in europe. so if they did get my money it would be impossible to get it back. the FBI agent told me they see a nice boat, maybe hooked to your truck at the storage unit, take a picture and then post it to sell.

Ya know...if I saw a deal like this I wouldnt go posting it so every other guy on the planet could take a crack at it....I would do my due dillegence cause you never know when something can just be a plane good deal. I could write a book on some of the things i have bought for way under what they should have been sold for. This may very well be a scam but you never know till you look Johnnie boy. If I was in the market I would have bene on a plane already lol.
Old     (firemedic)      Join Date: Jul 2006       10-04-2006, 9:55 PM Reply
Whay don't you buy it then and tell us all how it worked out. It's a scam and if you can't figure it out for yourself, good luck to you. BTW i wouldn't buy anything with that kind of price tag from a guy w/ 7 feedback. And if it was a legit deal, don't you think it would have already sold and he would have cancelled the listing????

Just food for thought

That X-star with the Quicksilver Sticker on the Side (Ebay Listing) is Jeff House's Boat. I'll talk to him today and find out if he's selling. I've ridden behind that boat many times... strange.
