What type of oil are you all using?

I just picked up a 06 Supra Launch 20 SSV and Im wondering what oil is safe to use. I work at a Porsche/Audi shop and we have 0-40W Mobil1 synth in our lines. Do I have to stick with a "Marine Engine Oil" or can I pretty much use any mineral/synth motor oil?

Also what kind of Gallons Per Hour should I be expecting? I have the Indmar 5.7 325hp

I use 15-40W Delo oil in my '06 21V. This is an oil typically used in diesel engines. Check your manual to be sure.

Gallons per hour depends on how much weight you run in people and ballast, speed and also if you are constantly starting and stopping as in driving beginners all day.

I have a 40 gallon tank that lasts from 7 am to about 4PM with just a stop for lunch during a full day at the lake. Still have about 8-10 gallons left but the gauge shows "E."

Mobil 1. They make a diesel, a high mileage and a European formula that are 40 weight when hot.
I use the 0W-40 that you sell in the Porsche shop and would recommend it highly. As long as you've got more than 20 hours on your boat engine it will work great for you.

I use mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30 I believe.

I heard some commercial for something that "Wasn't just motor oil, it's liquid engineering" .... i don't know what kind it was, but that sounds like good stuff

you can get electric extractors but their significantly more expensive. I've change the oil 3 times w/ this and will also be using it to extract/change the V-Drive transmission fluid.

Mercury Marine 25W40. I've got a boat dealer closer to the house then any auto parts store.

As long as you use a quality name brand oil of the proper weight, you will be fine. The biggest diff between auto and marine oil is the amount of moisture inhibitor. If you run the boat often, let it reach operating temp, and change the oil before lay up, you will not have a problem with rust or contamination.

I use Motorcraft 15w40 in 91 Supra

Indmar recommends a 15W40 motor oil meeting the API ratings of SL/SJ, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 for your particular engine.

A 0W40 is out of spec even though I imagine Mobil 1 surpasses all of those API specs. It might not matter that much that the cold weight is that low but if you're still under warranty, I would use something else. I'd be leery of using a 0Wanything on a marine engine myself but that's just me.

When it comes down to it, any oil is better than no oil. If you're not going to follow factory specs, then you you might as well do whatever you want. Given the number of people I know who do ignore these specs, I imagine the effect on engine life is pretty small.

Delo 400 here to, can do an oil change for $12 including filter.

Mobil 1 15w40

I use castrol 15-40 with ZDDP. It is a must for a non roller cam like mine. The Zinc is crucial for direct harsh high friction metal to metal contact with lifter and cam.

Thanks everyone! I still have to transfer the warranty on the motor so when I talk to Indmar I will ask them if using Mobil 1 will void the warranty. I hope it doesnt...I get it for free and that helps big time considering its like $7 a quart! ouch!

You can use it, indmar just wants you to wait until after 100 hours on the motor. Use that new stuff mobile 1 just came out with for diesel trucks the 15-40.

i use penzoil long life gold 15w 40 basically for diesels as well..i also use the castrol gtx 15w 40 when the penzoil isnt there.

Anthony, the Mobil 1 diesel 15W-40 meets all their standards. The 0W-40 meets CF standards.

I use Straight 30 weight synthetic racing oil. I have a friend that spent two summers rebuilding engines. He said that every engine that used this oil showed nearly zero signs of wear regardless of the mileage. I think my brand is Mobil but it says 30W racing oil on the front.

Oh yeah, I have an 02 Supra Launch SSV with 1300 hours on it. Cylinder compression check this last summer showed no signs of wear.

Rotella T 15-40 on a Chevy LT-1. Temps here are normally 90-100 degrees (Tucson, AZ)
