Apple's answer to speed control volume.

Mike talked about this app yesterday while out on the boat. He sent me this link. If you have a I phone you install this app onto your I phone for speed control volume like a HSE or Boost box. I phones have a GPS. It knows how fast you are going and when you get to a set speed the volume go's up or down. You set the limit's.

Having had a gen2 iphone for over a year now one the bigger stumbling blocks may be the 3G signal which is not always reliable but getting better. The iphone GPS is a 3G feature so if a weak signal is broadcast then you might have issues.

Second would be battery life, iphones charge times are nothing like an ipod. And as you can only charge through the proprietary cable port then it would more than likely disable it.

Yes you'd have to run a patch cable through the phone jack i'm sure but it would be a good test to see.

Another issue will be with older head units. Apple dropped firewire support on iphones and the last two gens of ipods so they eithet won't charge or won't even play through the proprietary cable.

Jrod, what do you mean by iphone/ipod integrated? As the iphone has an integrated ipod and this is a iphone only app then it has to work or Apple won't certify it.

That would probably also kill your battery CRAZY fast... I know it did when I was mtn bike riding some trails, I used a tracker and it killed my Battery with the quickness and wasnt very accurate because sometimes signal would be lost, etc..

Great concept though! I may be wrong, and it may work flawlessly.

Sounds like a cool solution vs the RMP control.

The GPS is a feature that came out in the same version as 3G but - that is totally different technology (Satellite GPS signal vs cell phone 3G signal). So - if you can receive the Satellite GPS signal - even if you can't get cell phone - you should be ok.

The iphone GPS is a 3G feature so if a weak signal is broadcast then you might have issues.

Nope... The GPS is GPS based in all but the first gen (with the fake triangulation GPS wannabe crap).

The difference is, the iPhone pulls the map data dynamically instead of keeping it stored in the unit so the GPS will work but if you need maps and you have no coverage, you are SOL.

I have it - works GREAT!! Still dialing it in - but used it cycling and driving so far. It's not perfect - but worth 99 cents. (no affiliation btw - just a user).

And - to answer some of the questions.
1) Only works with headphone jack
2) Seems to work when the phone is in 'sleep mode' (at least it did while I was biking yest)
3) Did have a few probs holding the GPS signal while driving (and i was in a convertible). But biking it was dead on the whole time.

And one other thing - someone mentioned the dropping of the prop firewire support. That is true - but you can get an adapter to allow the phone to charged with older accessories. It's $25 - I bought mine at the apple store. Works great! But like I said, the volume adapter control will not work if you using the bottom plug to transfer the music to your head unit (hope that makes sense). OK - I'm done.

OK, with all of my digital downloads, some songs volumes are way different than others. Has anyone heard of an app that levels out all of the song volumes, or how to fix that in Itunes. I haven't figured that out yet.

OK - now I feel like some kind of ITunes Dork. Bu Coo - there is setting under 'edit' / 'preferences' / 'playback' called "sound check". I think that is what you are looking for.

I will dispute that Manzo, i've had the GPS mode freeze or go blank when the signal is real weak and pickup again when i get full strength. Doesn't happen often but it does happen.

Kilo yes you can get an adapter that solves the firewire issue from Apple (Scosche Passport), Periphial or Scosche but they are generally large and attach to the bottom pin port and then you plug in your cable. You do have to be careful with those so as to not wear out the pin port, just an FYI.

Although I think this is really cool...Aren't we complicating our lives a little bit too much?? Do they not make volume knobs where you can reach over and turn the radio down if it's too loud?

Bu Coo, here is how you do it on your Ipod itself

1)Turn on iPod
The first step to doing anything, of course!

2)Choose Settings
In the main iPod menu, go to the “Settings” menu.

3)Choose Sound Check.
About halfway down the menu, you’ll find the “Sound Check” option. Highlight it and then click the iPod’s center button. Sound Check should now read “on” and you’re ready to rock (at reasonable volumes, of course).

I emailed them about the apple port vs the headphone jack. Here is the response's (I got 2 in 10 min)

It works with *some* connections to the bottom port. We don't have a list of devices that do/do-not work but have received mixed reports from various users. There's not a whole lot we can do about some devices that override the iphone's volume control.

I can report with certainty that it does not work with the kenwood head unit ipod integration kit that connects to the bottom which i use in my car (i have to use the aux input instead).

If you decide to purchase the app, I hope it works with your hardware configuration.

We've had mixed results with the dock. Some devices work and others don't. We are looking into ways to make it work with all devices, but at the moment are not sure it's possible.

I have an app on my iPhone that allows me to control my entire pool/spa and lighting at my house from anywhere I have service. Love it.

If you decide to purchase the app, I hope it works with your hardware configuration.

Well that kinda sux. I buy it and "hope" that it works with my hardware? Would be nice to have a week free trial type of thing.

It costs 99 cents! Do you really need to try it for a week before you make that kind of commitment?

Jeez - the app is 99 cents. If it doesn't work - oh well. My boat burns 99 cents in no time.....

I used it in my truck today, seemed to work pretty well. It takes over the playback function, replaces iTunes kind-of. Seems to have some pre-determined speed settings. It uses a combination of speed and vibration settings. I could see where the vibration settings might be more functional on a mountain bike.

My boat has both Aux-in and IPOD direct into my Clarion CMD5 via a CCAIPOD. As a side note I am quite happy with the CCAIPOD functionality. Just select a playlist, album, artist, etc., queue it up and plug it in. With the IPOD or IPHONE safe in the glovebox I can use any of my 3 remotes to pause, skip, or repeat a song. I doubt the application will work when it is connected to the CCAIPOD.

I will probably get more use out of it when I am on my friends boats since I already have my HSE revolution volume control dialed in to do as I like.

What setting are you using when it's on your boat?

I am using the 'road biking' profile. The problem with the driving profile is that it doesn't reach max volume until you hit around 70 mph (at least based on my exp). That's a little faster than i ski . You really have to play around with the volume slider to adjust soft to loud settings. Worked great in the boat this morning.

Yeah I knew I was going to take flak for that one. 99 cents is 99 cents though!!! I bought it, but haven't had a chance to play with it. This weekend will be the test.

One thing I have found to be helpful:
Start the app, get up to speed that you normally drive/board/ski at. Then use the volume control on the phone (the buttons on the side) to adjust the volume to the correct level (make sure you have a GPS signal). That moves the entire 'threshold' slider (keeps the distance between the high and low volume the same relative to each other). This will set the maximum volume correctly. Then, when you slow down, determine if the low volume point is correct. If not, adjust the left hand slider to be softer. However, be aware moving the left hand/low threshold slider also moves the right hand/high end slider. Yet the right hand/high end slider moves independently. This probably makes no sense now - but once you use it I think you will see what I mean. p.s. Damn - I have way too much time on my hands!!

Tried this yesterday on the skiing profile and couldn't get the settings right. At 22 mph it never got up to full volume (which is where it was set. Tried it at the bike profile and it worked better, I can't seem to get the volume spread out enough. I'd like to have it at max at 22 and when I get to around 5 have it at 1/5 or so, just so I can talk to the rider when coming around. The set low and set high don't seem to spread out far enough. Would be nice if you could just put a set speed for your low and high limits, seems like that would be easier to do anyway. May make that suggestion on the apps website. Pretty cool app though. No problems with signal either, and at times I went through almost no signal but it still worked well.

Kilo if you use both thumbs (one for the low and one for the high) it'll spread them out more. Even if you just hold the high one where you want it and move the low, it'll make them move independently.

Anyone know of any apps like this for a blackberry? I wish verizon would pick up the iphone.

Bu Coo, it's not more trouble than it's worth. First of all it's 99 cents I'm sure you have that in your truck or couch at home. But the only reason there's so much talking about getting it to work right is bc it's a brand new app and everyone is figuring out how it works. No biggie.

I downloaded this and....couldn't use it! No cell service where I was and the "gps" couldn't find my location because of cell service? Oh well, have to try it out at my home lake.

this sounds great. too bad it doesn't work with the dock/usb connector though. i understand why i guess, but if it did, that would be sweet. i use my iphone for internet radio, pandora, and wootunes on my boat all the time, but i use the dock connector to keep it charged and output to the eq instead of the headphone jack. it's hard to have to monkey with the eq while you're pulling riders (probably because it's not mounted on the left) . guess i could try it out with the mini-jack off the IS75 and give it a shot to see how it works. thanks for the post.

IS75 -- let us know if that works, I have one of those too - But - I bet it's still a fixed signal coming out, it's just an alternate way to get the signal - is my guess.
