Ok guys. Winter project is going to be ballast, I have an older DD sunsetter that has no stock ballast. I am asking for help on hiding the ballast(for more room)My current idea is too use sand in boxes or something that I can remove from boat while trailering. Or should I build boxes with sacs in them? Looking to do 1K or so, boat has power, and room to sit low. Thanks for any suggestions. I currently use(normally) 150 in back, 150 in locker, and 150 in front. I did this last time out with an added 200 in back and 75 in front, and I like the wake, maybe it was too much in the back, but something to play with.

I'm real familiar with this setup do you have an idea on the measurements of the compartments that you're planning on using ?

I wouldn't like having to load and unload weight every time I go out

Water is best. Hard ballast works, but is a pain to remove. If you go with water, you will want to build the system a little bigger than your current needs. Figure on total weight of a thousand or so for starters. keep in mind adding more or larger sacs or you'll end up redoing a lot of it. lead or pop bags are great. for small amounts, like the 450 you're running now, get some pop bags or lead. I run about 500 lbs of lead in my boat in addition to water ballast. I would'nt worry about putting in a ballast system for 500 lbs.

I can remove hard weight from my boat faster than pumping water ballast but the down side is you can't get rid of it if your on the water and have a long cruise. I like the fact that I can stash it all over the boat too and it stays out of the way. Space is valuable to me.

Not familiar with pop bags, what are they? Yeah the only reason I was thinking sand is that it is cheap, and can form to any shape I want and it is dense. I will draw something up tonight, but room on this boat is limited. What do you guys currently do as far as type and amount?

Hey man, right now i have a 97 Sunsetter DD and i have the wake dialed in perfectly to my liking! What i do is i run a few sand bags under the bow cushions, about 200lbs or so. Then i run a 300 lb sac in the locker, and i run a 540 lb launch pad recliner on each side on the engine, so i add weight, and i add seating as well! so im running bout 1600 lbs and well plus people at times. Wake is great riding 75' out at 23-24.

Pop products: steel shot in a handy dandy canvas bag with handles. running: 1500'ish water, 500 lead.

Alright guys this is what I have now, numbers are approx. (Black boxes are current set up) (green is tested ballast last time out) Under the seats I have equipment, and the depth is only about 6 inches. But I could put the vest on the sides of the boat. Up front i was thinking sand bags under the seats.. My problem with the ballast in the green squares is that it cramps the boat. But I could do some sand bags so you could still get around them. I like the pop bags but it is roughly 1$ per pound, and sand is like 30lbs a 1$. Big difference. I have 450lbs in water, So I was thinking sand in cheap duffle bags to move around, So if we had more people it could be taken out. This set up will not be forever just the next few summers, until buy a new one. Any suggestions on anything? Where do you put your vests? any other ideas?

dude take those numbers around the engine box and at least double them. With a sunsetter you could put almost 600lbs on each side of the box. In my little SN2001 i put 500 on each side of the box 400 in the rear and 250 up front PLUS 5 people. Load that sunsetter up!!!!!!

That was kinda what I was thinking, I was looking at some launch pad twins, but they would be hard to hide unless I built boxes. Also boat rides like crap if there is hardly any weight in the front, as far as planing, and choppy water. I also have been thinking some sand as well. E-what do you use? What do you do for room? Thanks.

I'd quadruple the side sacs. I run 600lbs either side of the engine in my mc 190, 400lbs in the rear and 200 up front.

How durable are the recliners from launch pad? I dont like the idea of puncturing them.

I use the launch pad recliners. They are sweet. Tons of weight and they also create another seat facing the rider. I love them. Then just a skylon fat boy in the back, but i dont fill it all the way cause my boats wake will become a curb with 540lbs in the back, unless i put 500 under the bow which is impossible. Def do some sand under the bow of your boat. Since its a sunsetter you could actually do a couple ballast bags under the front too. But my favorite way to add weight to the nose is with electronics. Add a couple batteries, a subwoofer, an amp. Then i have some weights in a gym bag under the bow that i can move around for changing the weight

Alright guys I think I have narrowed it down... 1)Def a integrated bow sac or sand up front.. is the bow sac worth $200? 2)Either large white coolers from walmart, or 440 twins, they are the same price $110 total and capacity, So what do you think hard ballast tank vs. soft, these will be used on the sides of the engine. I am leaning toward the coolers because you can abuse them, you can put stuff inside, or for beer, or for ballast. More useful. Good idea?

So I lied, by calculating the twins versus the coolers it is: 2 coolers = 510 twins = 800 (not actually 440, more like 400) So what do you think? Thanks (and yes I am going to the lake tomorrow, I am addicted.)
