ok, suppose you take off the fins and the holes are left in the board, i am assuming that water can get through the board and also into the core?......is there a chance that this may happen?

if it is a balsa wood core, or some other composite core that is porous, the answer is yes.

If it is a foam core, which most boards are, it is closed-cell foam, and it will not absorb water.

Actually even the balsa cores you are fine. The balsa is only in the center of the board. It does not extend out to the edges or where the fins are.

If your concerned, swab the hole with a little 2 part epoxy. Typically, there should be a block of ABS plastic inserted into the core, (foam or wood) so it shouldn't be just bare core material unless there is damage or a delam issue, or you drilled your own fin holes... which you can do with balsa cores because the wood is end grain, but generally not the best idea...

Lyle - the dna core hyperlites had the wood come all the way to the edges and tips; however the lf ultra cores were not constructed this way.
