Hey guys, i am sincerely looking at the canon rebel 300d slr but i want to do my research beforehand (obviously) so i get the most bang for the buck! I think it would be a cook post to see what different photographers/videographers shoot with ( ie lens, camera, cf cards, all of the major stuff that inhances your pics) and how much and also to see some of your best pics! SO I'LL START OFF
right now i own a canon gl2 paid 3gs for it and a bunch of other things off ebay. A perdy good videocamera (3ccd)and what not. I am also really intereested in buying the rebel

PAL version of the GL1.

I'm quite a fan of your setup.
I'm stuggling with a good wide angle solution at the moment. My 24-85 is a piece of crap, and I hardly use it.

A 17-40 would be nice, but I have an addiction to fast glass. It also depends on whether I grab a 1D in the future or not. I can't stand this 1.6x crop.

Josh, the 17-40 is actually a really nice lens... I've used it a little bit, and it's just as good quality as the 2.8, 'cept you're losing 1 stop. Chances are you'll never use that last 1 stop for wakeboard stuff anyway...

I'm also going to abstain from posting the gear list here, since I don't need someone to come by my area and rob me blind =)

Mike:

I was dreading reading your equipment list when I saw you posted! :-)

Josh:

17mm seems plenty wide with a 1.3 crop to me. I toyed with getting a 12-24 sigma but at f4.5 to 5.6 (I think) it did seem like that might be too slow. Now seeing shots at 17mm I'm glad I didn't. The 17-40 is a nice carry around lens and works well with my Kenko 1.4X (I still have center AF and f4 with it), which gives me a bit more range. The quality doesn't suffer much with the Kenko either (another "cheaper than Canon" item which has gotten great reviews!) On a 10d with 1.6 the 17-40 might not be wide enough but I think you need to think along the lines of how your lens will work on a 1.3 crop or full frame body down the road!

I looked hard at the 24-70 f2.8 L but decided it just looked too big and clunky for general use. The 50 prime gives me a fast lens for interior type shots without flash. So for a limited budget I think I've got things somewhat covered. I'd like to get a 300 or 400mm L IS and a 2X TC next.

hahahahaha!

Now Mike should come back with something about how easy it was for you to toss because of how much lighter Nikon equipment is . . . . . .

You note he made a nice comment about the 17-40!

Rich--
There's a lot of Canon equipment Mike wishes would have a Nikon label slapped on it: 1DMKII, 85 f1.2, 200 f1.8, 400 f4 DO...

Of course, there's a lot of equipment with "Mike Isler" slapped on it that I wish said "Garrett Cortese," so I guess we're even...

Garrett,

You can't rob me for the next few days since UPS has almost all of my stuff! Heh... and don't talk to me about your damn white lenses... 85/1.2, 200/1.8, 50/1.0, 400/4....

You Canon people don't have anything on a Nikon 1200-1700mmm/5.6-8 zoom... or a 300mm/2.0... or a 10.5mm DX fisheye... or a 12-24mm DX wideangle... or a 200-400mm/4... should I keep going?
Maybe I'll sell you some black spray paint or gaffer's tape so your lenses blend in with the good ones...

If everyone's posting gear lists, I guess I'll post a few items...

Nikon D2h
Nikon F5
Nikon N90s
Nikonos V w/35mm/2.5 lens
Nikon 300mm/2.8 AF-S II
Nikon 70-200mm/2.8 AF-S VR
Nikon 12-24mm/4 DX
Nikon 16mm/2.8 fisheye
Nikon 105mm/2.8 Micro

Nikon 24mm/2.8
Sigma 17-35/2.8-4
Nikon flashes: SB800 (2), SB28DX, SB26, SB105
PocketWizard MultiMAX (6)

Horseman LE 4x5 camera with 210/5.6 and 90/6.8 lenses
Mamiya 645AFd medium format with 80/2.8 and 35/3.5 lenses

Other tasty bits...

no , actually this gives me a great idea on what other people use, then i can ask ques and research it and then figure out what i wanna buy. for instance.... wats the differenc (price/quality) in the 1d vs 10d (canon), wats a pal ?? I now have learned that NIKON BLOWS and wat does all that crap about 1.3 crop mean!!!!!?????? thanks travi
Old     (richd)      Join Date: Oct 2003       04-19-2004, 7:19 PM Reply
Without getting too technical the crop factor is a magnification factor due to the sensors in the digital cameras being smaller than a 35mm film frame. When you hear about a 1.3 crop that means the image is magnified 1.3 X and cropped as well to the equivalent of 1.3 times the focal length of the lens. So a 100mm telephoto on a full film frame becomes 130mm telephoto on a 1D or a 160mm on a 10d/Rebel. It's great if all you're shooting is telephoto. The problem starts when you want wide angle. You need very small WA lens's to get even normal perspective on a 1.6 crop factor digital cam. I'll let Mike or Garrett give you the full technical lowdown if they want to get into a lengthy explanation.

PAL is the european video standard vs NTSC is in America/Japan. Pal video won't play back on our sets and vice versa.

Seems like it's my turn to pee in this little competition of ours... and Mike, I don't know what you're talking about with my white lenses... you know what I really use to make my wakeboarding images...

-Kodak FunSaver Outdoor disposable camera w/ flash
-Kodak Water & Sport disposable camera for tube shots
-a pinhole camera created out of empty toilet paper tubes for the artistic shots
-sometimes I use a camera phone for lifestyle pics
-when these options aren't readily available during a photo shoot, I break out my crayons and draw...

If you have any questions, just check out this article:

Can also serve as portable shoulder held missle launcher when not on camera! :-)
