Has anyone ever bought airline miles? Ive found a few deals for $17.00 a mile. I've heard of this and it seems to be a common practice.

I'm trying to figure out the value in buying the miles opposed to just buying the flights.

1.7 cents a mile sounds more reasonable.

Don't do it, really not a good value. It's meant to be a way to top off you account if you're just shy of a miles booked flight or merchandise award. Say you have 24,000 miles and need 25,000 to cash in for a flight, essentially you get that flight for $17.

For instance, most airlines you can book a basic round trip for 25-30,000 miles, usually a $300-400 ticket. Or if you bought miles it would be $425 to $510. In the merchandise example usually a $100 value item is between 12-15k points. So if you bought miles for that purpose you'd essentially be paying $204 or more for a $100 item.
