I wear em when I shred railz. most of the times. and at all the cables its a must. and most rail parks with an insurance. when Im just riding behind the boat I find it useless. just puts extra weight on your neck and the strap can hurt if you fall wierd. especially with fast speed

When fitted corectly it helps a ton behind the boat. Many bell ringers without and none in three seasons with. We also ride the Dirty D so debris is another great reason to wear one. I like the Pro Tec Ace Wake myself but there are other good ones. Fit is crucial! It helps in the confidence department too.

I like faceplants more with my helmet on than I did before I got one. Now, at my skill level my only invert is after I do a faceplant. I can do a couple other things but I've got the faceplant nailed and I'm thinking it would be nice to have a face shield too.

Yeah, I wear mine behind the boat. I really like the ear-flaps for protecting against blowing out the ear drum on smacks. I also noticed, at least for me, that the impacts when I'd hit hard didn't seem to hurt anywhere near as bad. I rock mine 100% of the time.

+1 on blown eardrum - started wearing one after I had to spend two weeks off the water due to rupture after bad landing. Also helps reduce that bell ring effect. All in all, it removes two blocks to progression for me.

I wear one, because you have to at the cable. Don't see a point behind a boat. I've still got concussions with a helmet on...

I've had a really good experience using BERN helmets, but there seems to be a really big following for Shred Ready helmets on here.

"I've still got concussions with a helmet on" ...and people still die behind air bags with seat belts on. It's a percentage game. And the percentages are far in your favor if you use the safety equipment in any risky situation, period. Debate on...

Yeah, it's definitely a two camp debate. Cushion vs. None. Surface area in relation to cranium deceleration, added weight contributing to more energy upon impact, there's lots of ways to look at it. Lots of the guys in my crew, including myself, have found that we prefer riding with the helmets. I definitely think it's a personal choice on that one.

Helmet or not to helment ? My help with blowing eardrums but as far a a good KO i don't think so. Helment on rails a must ... Behind the boat not for me....Tried it once and it seemed to hurt more than it helped..

If you are in a Shredtown video, a helmet might be a good idea. Straight wake riding is debatable and has been roundly debated around here. Ben's post sums up the heart of the issues.

Obstacles- Yes, always Wake- I personally don't like them. I haven't had a concussion until I started using one and never had one since. Concussions in the water are not fun. But I can understand if you're worried about busted eardrums or if you're worried about the board hitting you. I've had the board hit me in the head and thats not fun either... but for me it seems like an extremely small chance of happening vs. a concussion with a helmet

GKD, I've used both before, and they definitely both do an excellent job. If you've got a chance to, try both on before you buy. I've had excellent experience using BERN helmets, in the past, so that's the helmet I ride. When this helmet bites the dust, I'll be coming back to BERN. BERN: definitely comfortable, fit well, the ear guards are very nice and soft, and the chin strap is pretty easily adjustable.

I don't want to get sucked into the same stupid back and forth that ensued the last time this topic was discussed... but if you're going to wear a helmet when riding boat... at least make it a Shred Ready.... cuz they are DOPE ;)

Ben, Thanks for the help. Bern offer a choice of Brock or EPS foam. What's your thoughts there?

Brock is definitely a softer foam that'll conform better to your head. EPS is a harder foam, I believe a bike helmet is an EPS style foam. Pretty hard stuff. I'd go Brock for sure.

I've been wearing a Pro-Tec (that I hired) at cable, not that keen with them. I tried on a "Two Face" and an "Ace Wake" at the pro shop. They weren't bad. I'm going to try a few Bern helmets on today. Cheers Ben.
