I'm looking at getting a 50mm lens and Amazon has the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 for $84.99. The price sounds good for a 50mm lens. I have read the reviews and it seems like the only complaint is it's durability. If you have this lens what are your thoughts and how is it holding up for you?

Thanks

I have a nikon one and EVERY photographer i know has one. You will learn alot with this lens and it is so worth the money. i've never had any problems at all with the durability, it's actually done quite well. IQ has been good for the $ as well

It has a plastic mount so may be that why the durability is in question. I have one and it's fairly sharp but slow to focus. You can't beat it for 80 bucks.

This probably doesn't help, but I am planning on buying the 50mm f/1.8. I think it will be a great lens to start off with for a very reasonable price.

Randy if you are worried, you can get the 50mm 1.4 for around $300.00 it has a metal body and mount.

The Canon 50 1.8 is a great lens, especially for the money. Mine is very sharp. One of the best values out there in camera gear.

I have it, very sharp lens. But slow to focus, as noted above. Excellent results for shooting the family around the house, scenery/landscapes, etc. I have tried to use at basketball games, and I have to take a LOT of shots to get a few decent ones. Can't really complain for the price.

Joe Schmoe or others, would the 1.4 focus fast enough for use with indoor sports? I am able to get close enough to court that i don't want any more than 50mm.

I didn't think the 50 f1.4 was that much faster in the AF dept over the 1.8. The 85 f1.8 is the most popular for basketball in the short tele dept.
